Weight Loss for your trip?

I remember one other thing I did--I didn't load up too many calories at any one meal or snack. I read a study a few years ago that studied young women who consumed 400 calories vs. older women who consumed 400 calories at one time. The youinger ones burned it all off over the next few hours but the older ladies only burned 200 and presumably added fat from the extra 200....(paraphrasing the info...but that was the gist of it...the younger ones could burn off a higher caloric intake than the older ones). So even if I ate exactly the way I always did I would add pounds over time because I burned less...

My blood sugar levels are healthy. I'm not questioning the method. I'm saying that I personally disagree with this method being "the one single best thing" because it didn't work for me. Losing weight is like buying clothing. It's all personal, and you have to find what fits for you. Doing anything before eating breakfast simply doesn't work for me.

I'm only guessing here that you're not familiar with the Weight Watchers program. If you were, you wouldn't have made this comment. Weight Watchers is NOT a caloric/carbohydrate manipulation. There's so much more to the program than the food. Weight Watchers incorporates:
  • healthier food choices
  • portion control
  • mental well-being
  • physical activity
  • group support

I'm going to let this go now because the original poster has already stated that Weight Watchers didn't work for her. But I just wanted to correct some misinformation.

Here again, losing weight is all very personal. That's what studies show, but it doesn't mean that it's ALWAYS the case. I didn't have an exercise regimen in losing my weight. It's only in maintaining that I've had to worry about exercise. I lost all of my weight through diet only.

Dan-
I completely agree with you on this. The only thing that helped me lose 40+ pounds was finding something that worked for me (which by the way, was WW :teeth: ). I have more to lose, but it is working and it is a lifestyle that I can live with forever.

BTW- Congrats on your weight loss and your new baby on the way!

I eat healthy 6 days a week and have 1 SPLURGE day where I can eat whatever I want. It is easier to skip the goodies the remainder of the week if I know I can eat them on Saturday. It gives me something to look forward to. I also signed up to run in a road race (YIKES) this summer. That is giving me motivation to exercise. If you can't run, you can sign-up for some walk-a-thons that raise money for charities. Start preparing slowly months ahead of time. The goal is just to finish, not to break records. GOOD LUCK! :wizard:

I do the same thing. I'm currently on the Weight Watchers Points system. It works well for me, since I'm able to eat foods that I like. And if there is a special occasion or a dinner out with friends each week, I let myself "cheat" without berrating myself. I hope to lose about 25 to 30 pounds before my vacation in September.

Which reminds me...the one thing I've learned while dieting is that you have to learn to pace yourself properly and to have realistic expectations. Don't set the bar too high as far as weight loss. Losing 50 pounds in a couple months is not only impossible, but it is unhealthy. The average person can lose about 2 or 3 pounds a week. This is realistic. And while it seems to come off slowly, results will show in no time.

Good luck to all of us losing weight! I know we can do it!

I too would love to lose 20 lbs. before our September trip. It's baby weight and I can't seem to lose it. Any tips would be great. I have tried WW and it hasn't worked for me mostly because it takes time to count points. The core plan is too restrictive for me. I have started exercising 5 days a week so that all the parks won't tire me out. I haven't been to WDW since my last baby who is over a year now and back then I was in shape.

I am one of those that believe different diets for different people. What might work for some, won't for others.
Anyhow....I was a fat kid until my teens....then lucky me could eat ANYTHING without weight gain at all. THEN I hit the ripe old age of 40 and BANG the tables turned on me. DAMN!
I am not a big food eater, MY choice of poison is JUNK food. GIMME CAKE, CANDY & COOKIES and I will love you forever (really)! That being said, I really have cut down on all of these :furious: ! Besides YELLING alot at those near & dear to me, I DRINK massive AMOUNTS of WATER....JUST DO IT...you will get use to it! Also, I moderatly exercise (once in awhile I get off the couch ...and Streeeeeetch) basically stretch, walk, and mild situps...etc (they hurt, so I dont like them too much).

If anything WATER WATER WATER till you float. Flush those Oreo toxins right out of you! It really helps me!

:wizard: Good Luck to my kind of People!

I was reading a trip report a couple of months ago and the poster mentioned The FIRM. She said that she had lost a bunch of weight by following their program. I looked into it and order the TransFIRMer the next week. I have now been working out at 5:00am and watching my portion size and calorie intake. I have cut out sodas and junk food of all kinds. I am maintaining a 1400 calorie a day diet with only a few cheats over the last 3 weeks. I converted my garage into a gym complete with puzzle piece gym floor! So far I have lost 10 pounds and I can see a difference in my waist! I had to finally decide that it was time to do something. It's different for each person and you have to decide to do it for you or it will never work!

I've got 25 more pounds to go and I really believe that I can do it!!

I recently lost 30 lbs....ok not recently, when I got married 3 years ago...How I did it? Simple math... Put out more calories than you take in. IE- do SOMETHING every single day- walk jog, life weights, workout video AND count every single little calorie. EVERY SINGLE ONE.

Thats the "secret", that's the only way to lose weight calories in < calories out.

I don't really diet, per se, since I have been pregnant/nursing/nursing and pregnant/nursing and still nursing for the last 5 years, but something that worked for me was cutting out all dairy. My younger dd had a dairy sensitivity when she was born, and so no dairy for 10 1/2 months until her big sister accidentally fed her a piece of her pizza lunch, and we discovered that the dairy problems had passed. I have gone back to very small amounts of dairy, but if I eat too much, I have tummy troubles. Dairy lurks in so many places, under various names, so PM me or do a search if you are interested in cutting it out.

Whole foods, lots of water, and movement. Good luck! :cheer2:

I too have been overweight most of my life, I went on the 6 week body makeover and lost 20 pounds in 6 weeks. This program is not a diet, you have to change your way of eating and it is very, very strict. No salt, no bread, no dairy, measure everything. I personally didn't think I had the will power to do it. I did it!!!! I since has stopped eating properly and gained a few pounds (yes, just a few) I went back to eating on plan, oh yeah and drinking 100oz of water per day, and I'm doing great. By the time I go to disney I should be at my ideal weight. I wasn't after the 20 pounds I lost (wanted to lose at least 15 more). I highly recommend this program. It's not easy but anything worth while is never easy.

I KNOW what to do, can easily tell other people what needs to be done (lower your food intake, exercise and water) but when it comes down to actually doing it myself, I can't seem to get it through my head. I know that I have a MAJOR addiction to chocolate and that's where my biggest problem is (aside from the fact that I don't exercise) But I LOVE drinking water (or crystal light) so that's what I mainly do. I only drink soda on occassion, but I have to try limiting the chocolate. Pam

Hi Pam,

For what it's worth, your above remarks reminded me very much of myself. I've needed to drop some weight for several years now (quit smoking, packed on the lbs. and never really got it off) and, although I knew what I needed to do, I didn't do it. I too was not a big soda drinker but am a certifiable chocoholic :) It sounds like you really are motivated so, given our similarities, I figured I'd share my experience with you.

I got hooked on watching Celebrity Fit Club (yeah, I know, totally dorky reality TV crap but we all have our vices!) and over the course of a few seasons, became intrigued with Dr. Ian Smith's diet plans (www.fatsmashdiet.com) so I finally bought his book with some skepticism as I'm not really into fad dieting, nor am I a fan of having to do lots of measuring, calculating of calories, or keeping track of tons of diet related info.

To my surprise and pleasure, it really is just a small book containing straight forward, easy to read, easy to follow guideline about how to change your eating habits. Essentially, he recommends four phases that start with a week of going "cold turkey" quitting all the bad foods and then gradually adding those things back into your diet over the subsequent weeks, but in more reasonable portions. I was shocked to find myself not even craving chocolate after the first week! Of course, exercise is also key and he provides numerous ways to gradually integrate it into your days.

I really liked it because it's kind of like "Fixing Your Eating Habits for Busy Dummies". It was such a no brainer and really didn't complicate my life at all. In just a few months, I've lost 20 pounds and am still going.

Anyway, since we seemed to have similar personality types, I thought this might be an option that would work for you! Whatever you decide to do, best of luck and have a great vacation!

I was diagnosed as having PCOS and being insulin resistant. I was put on medication for the resistance, and then started having porridge (oatmeal for any Americans reading this) for brekkie, an apple for morning tea, a HUGE salad with protein for lunch, apple for afternoon tea and a low carb dinner with another huge salad, + veggies and protein. Between the meds and the change in eating habits, I was full all the time and st :thumbsup2 ill losing weight.

Still trying to motivate myself to add exercise to it *lol*

I have to admit, for me, the key was finding out that it wasn't just me eating too much that was causing the problem, it was/is quite honestly, hormonal (I didn't realise insulin was a hormone).

Best of luck... :thumbsup2

what is PCOS? Is it like diabetes? How do they find out if your insulin resistant? My problem is almost definately hormonal. I eat very little yet I can't lose weight even if I exercise for 1 hour a day. This was never a problem before my last baby. It seems most of my weight is around the middle too which is usually a hormone imbalance.

PCOS stands for Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. Here's a link describing it:

no meaning to hijack the thread...just popping in to answer a question...

PCOS...Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome... diagnosis of this is hard to explain. PM me, otherwise there are lots of good sites out there on it.

PCOS is often (but not always) accompanied by insulin resistance, where the body doesn't effectively use what is produced when we eat carbs/sugars. When they aren't used effectively, they get stored as fat (just a very brief idea...not exactly how it works, but close enough for the moment). To diagnose it, you get an extended (3 hour or longer) blood glucose test where you drink the icky horrible sweet thing. Then, take blood every hour for up to 5 hours. I'm a borderline type II diabetic, in that my body makes it's own insulin, just produces wayyyy more than it needs which makes me always hungry, and doesn't effectively utilize the sugars/carbs I eat. So they put me on meds for type II diabetics and it has worked like a charm. Slight cuttings of carbs/sugars (but I still get fruit, porridge, whole grain breads, etc....just in more limited amounts).

Any other questions, feel free to drop me a pm :) I'm still new to the board and don't want to take over someone else's thread.

Cheers.

I agree with JillPie. You have to "make the decision to JUST DO IT". That's what I did on Jan 3, 2006. Since then I have lost 32 pounds and gone down 2.5 pant sizes. I still have a lot to go, but it's definately a start. I did it by the following:
1. Cut OUT, not down, OUT, soft drinks unless it's diet, caffeine free and drink 8-12 glasses of water per day.
2. Join a gym and go at least 3-5 days per week at 1 hour each time.
3. Cut down your portions.
4. Eat smart. No more fried, greasy food. No fast food that will make you work hours harder at the gym. Eat 6 small meals per day if you can and if you can't, then watch the types of food you eat. Don't combine a lot of starches with carbs in one meal. Veggies are good.
5. Change the ingredients you cook with or use on a daily basis. Get good butter (Smart Balance, Promise). That's important. Eat whole wheat bread. Try and eat yogurt with a Special K bar for breakfast. Adapt to fruit, but limited since it's loaded with sugar.
If you can do these things along with determination, then I'm sure you'll lose the weight you want to. I don't know what your goal is, but you'll get there. You just need diligence and determination. If you need support, just pm me anytime. Good luck.

In Dec 2001 I weighed 225 and was miserable during our trip to WDW. My feet were killing me, my back ached, I was out of breath, I refused to wear a bathing suit, and my chest hurt. It was scary.

I decided to go to Weight Watchers and I lost 65 lbs by my Sept 2002 trip. It was wonderful to go to WDW and be able to walk all day, swim, use the hot-tub and not worry if I was going to make it up the incline to the Land Pavilion. WW, along with daily exercise, is the only plan that works for me. As soon as I go off it, I gain weight. It is a continual struggle to keep the weight off. I am up 20 lbs right now...but with warm weather finally arriving, I am hoping to get outside and get back into shape.

This past trip we went to DTD. Getting off the boat from OKW we were behind a young couple who were extremely overweight - I mean they could barely walk.

As soon as we were off the boat, they sat down on a bench to rest. An hour later, I sighted them again, sitting on another bench a few hundred yards along. All day long, as we darted from one store to another, shopping and having a great time, I kept seeing this couple sitting on a bench, sweating and looking miserable. I felt so bad for them because that could have been me if I had continued to let myself go.

I am no slim jim, but I feel so much better and have much more energy after losing the weight. Hopefully you will too!

GOOD LUCK!
