Weight Loss and Disney

Last summer I had been doing the Atkin's diet up until the day we left for WDW. Once the plane took off I didn't give the word "diet" another thought and ended up only gaining back 3 pounds over the 12 day trip. With all the walking that you do I think it really helps to keep the weight gain down to a minimum.

If you eat intelligently and walk as much as possible, you can lose weight while at WDW. I also exercise every morning. Lost two pounds during our last trip. :rolleyes1

I low carbed twice at WDW - it was a challenge only to maintain willpower, not in finding good and healthy food. Our last two trips? Anything I want. Lots of water, walking, make sure you eat breakfast all help.

The biggest thing to do? Make a commitment to get back on program when you get back. That is always my challenge... :goodvibes

Good luck and have a great trip!!!

I was in the same situation during our last trip in March. I actually was able to maintain my weight-- we did so much walking!! And drink lots of water. As for eating, I tried not to stray too much from what I normally eat. We only had 2 breakfasts "out"; the other days we had cereal and fruit in the room (save $$ too!). I always brought an apple with me for a mid-am snack, and sometimes brought PB&J in for lunch. I also brought other pre-packaged healthier snacks. I still had a cheeseburger and fries once or twice, and indulged in dessert a few nights. I was definitely content. E-mail me with any questions lilpat125@hotmail.com

Good luck!

I guess I'm in the minority here, but you asked for opinions so here's mine :wave2: for what it's worth. I have followed a controlled-carb (not low carb) eating plan to regulate my hyperinsulinemia for over 6 years now. I lost 62 lbs and have kept them off. Because this is now not a "diet" but a "Way of Eating" for me, I do not ever consider going off plan. In fact, I haven't eaten off plan in over 3 years (the first 3 years I thought I could get away with "little cheats" , which are never as little as they seem).

In these past 3 years I've been on 3 cruises, 2 trips to WDW, countless business & pleasure trips to the US (NY, DC, WA, CA, CO, VA, MD, MA, FL other than WDW :earsboy: ), Canada, and I just came back from 10 days in Spain, and I have kept to my eating plan on all those trips. When I travel I am a bit more flexible regarding what I eat, not so strict about balancing my carbs & protein, and I even eat dessert on occasion, if it's really carbworthy :flower: . But I do follow the basics of my plan (carbs are limited to one meal a day, which means no snacking on Dole Whips, :cake: , cookies, pastries... sad, I know :faint: ) :rotfl:

My suggestion to you would be to look over the menus on allears.net, and decide what things are must-have splurges, things that are WDW experiences, and choose a few to have as treats. That might be a good compromise between throwing caution to the wind and depriving yourself of anything good to eat!

If you have been on a program for 6 months you will not want a lot of the stuff you worry about anyway.

ITA - A few years ago, I made a choice to change my Lifestyle. I never looked at it as a "diet" or as any kind of deprivation. I just decided to make healthier eating & exercise decisions. When I go to WDW (or anywhere else) I eat whatever I want. I have noticed that what I want falls into the realm of healthier choices because that is what my body has come to want & expect. You can train your tastebuds. The only inherited taste is sweet & that can often be quelled with fresh fruit. If not, and you are eating healthier choices otherwise, a little sweet smackeral now & then won't hurt. My body responds negatively when I make bad food choices now. Fatty food does not sit well with me. Overeating causes me so much discomfort, that it isn't even an option anymore.

Go & enjoy! Just take your Lifestyle with you.

Last two trips to WDW I was dieting. I really tried to eat healthy at the parks. I chose salads and grilled chicken when I could. I also brought a box of my high fiber low fat cereal and granola bars with me. This trip I am going to bring some lite salad dressings in the small packets because they didn't offer any in the rest. we went to. Think healthy instead of dieting. Be good when you can and have a great time. Plan a couple of splurges through out the trip so you don't feel deprived.

I actually lost weight at WDW and I ate whatever I wanted. We averaged 9 miles per day walking! We used a pedometer to keep track. One day we walked 13 miles!

I think if a person had the ability and time to walk that far everyday, an individual could lose a lot of weight. However, some people cannot physically do it. Most people I talk to think that walking one mile is a lot!

I allowed myself one hot fudge sundae at ghiradeli's. The rest of the time I tried to avoid carbs by not having potatoes or bread. I also got some fudge on Main Street and kept it in the Hotel room and tried to limit myself. What helped was to carry some weight loss bars with me at the parks to hold me over until meals. I tried to eat breakfast and bought some fruit for the hotel. I did allow myself alcohol but avoided beer. I've been to Disney twice while on this diet and it didn't set me back weight wise. Good luck!!!

Once I did the low carb diet and came home with a loss of 6 lbs. of course later on, I gained it all back plus some. a couple of months ago I was there for 10 days and am trying to cut back calories, exercise and eat right this time around. I lost 3 lbs. that week at WDW. I have gone from 177 to 152 lb since April 7th this year :cool1: and plan to drop 20 more by watching what I eat and not eating junk food anymore.
I'm sorry if this may come across as being mean, or hatefull, and I apologize ahead of time if I do, but when I'm there and see really big people eating things like hamburgers and pastries, I try even harder to stick with my plan. like the saying go's Nothing tastes as good, as being thin feels. Linda

I don't think that the big problem is what you eat on vacation; It's that you forget that you aren't on vacation anymore when you get home. (That's a rhetorical "you" by the way. ;) ) I find that I need to resume my pre vacation eating patterns or its easy to step on the slippery slope.
