does anyone know what the weight limit is for checked baggage? we bringing allot of snacks, laundry soap etc...into the checked luggage? is it only w/carry on that they charge over a certain weight??

Check your airline's website for specifics, but generally it's 50 pounds per checked bag. I'm not sure what, if any, weight limit exists for carryons, but passengers should never pack heavier bags than they can lift above their heads long enough to safely place them in and remove them from the overhead compartment.

It depends upon your airline, but typical would be 2 bags at 50lbs each.

Airlines are weighing bags and fining people who are even the slightest amount over the limit. Note that the limit is per bag, so one bag at 60lbs and one at 40lbs isn't acceptable (you'll see people rearragning their stuff to make each bag under the limit.)

Few ailines have a specific weight limit for carry-on bags. Yet.

interesting...thanks. i think instead of sending some stuff ahead i think ill just distribute evenly amongst our bags. thanks :thumbsup2

I have a quibble on this one. While few US-based airlines have a weight limit for carryons, carriers based in other countries certainly do, and have had for a very long time. In those cases, you don't get to pay a fine in order to take it on -- you get to check the bag if you can't get it under the weight limit.
In some cases the limit is so low that a laptop alone might go overweight.

Bottom line is always carefully check the website of your own airline, and check it within 24 hours of departure. The limits have been known to change.

For Northwest a carry-on can not exceed 40 pounds. Checked luggage, 50 pounds.

Most have a limit of 50 lbs., which is a challenge since many bags are heavy before they're packed! USAirways was enforcing this rule strenuously the last time I flew.

Check your airline website for specifics and this site as well.

They might. They might not. If the wight limit is 50, the airline is justified in charging if the weight is higher. Also, there's no guarantee that your scale and the airline's scale will register the weight identically.

I wouldn't take any chances. Remove things you don't really need. Get the bag down to 45 pounds. Then you'll be able to bring home some souvenirs.

Or, if you must bring everything, throw some heavy items into a separate bag. Most airlines allow two checked bags per ticketed passenger.

That's way too close - and who knows how accurate your scale is? Repack.

It's been my experience that the weight limits for bags are being enforced.

I ended up adding a small duffle bag now each big one is about 46/47 pounds. Now the trick is not to add anything w/in the next few days.

Jetblue had the 50 pound check bag limit last month. Unfortunately this was something I didn't check into, had no idea about the weight limit but also don't have a scale so it really wouldn't have mattered. The airline personel checked my small bag first that weighed 35 pounds then moved onto the big bag. All of a sudden she is moving fast to get my little bag off the belt, I had no idea what she was doing. The big bag weighed 52 pounds so she snagged my little bag so I could move something over. I was soo glad I had packed everything in zip lock bags in my suitcase because I took one with a pair of jeans and moved it over, problem solved and no fee for overweight bag. I believe the fee would have been $20 but I am not positive. My bag was ticketed with a heavy bag tag but it was just under 50. Going home I just made sure to put all the long pants and heavy things in the little bag and I had no problem at all.

I am glad to hear you are not taking any chances with a 51 pound bag because from my experience it appears as though they would not have let that slide.

Just checked on my flights - Delta and American. Both are 50 for checked and 40 for carryon.

When we went, it was 50 lbs and they were strictly enforcing it. We were some of the people having fun rearranging our bags in the middle of the airport while trying to keep track of an exhausted 3 yr old! No fun at the time, but pretty funny a few months later!! :rotfl:

Yes, be very very careful! The last time I flew I had one bag over limit and they made me go to the the special handling line and I could not believe it! It took me an hour and 45 minutes to get through the line!!! I went through four airports that trip and the other three just had me pay a fine, but the last one - a two hour line! Luckily my connecting flight was three hours or I would have been stranded.....
