Okay, I'm probably spelling this wrong, but does anyone have a weigela? I ahve a wine and roses variety and was wondering if anyone knew when you were supposed to prune these? We planted them last fall, so this is our first spring w/them. None of my books has anything about them. Should I prune now, or wait until they flower and drop? They could probably benefit from some care to tidy them up and make then denser, so maybe I sacrifice flowers for growth this year anyway.

Thanks for any input!

I have had one that my mom planted in 1969. (I live in the house I grew up in) I prune it right after it flowers in the spring, don't know if it's the right thing to do but it's lasted 36 years so that works for me.

If you want to prune weigela, prune right after it flowers. It really isn't necessary, though, unless it's shaped awkwardly or very leggy. I like the graceful shape of unpruned shrubs usually, but it's a matter of personal taste.

I don't prune mine. It is huge, but so is my yard.
I got it really inexpensively at Walmart and it is beautiful in flower.
Very showy and Victorian looking.

Thanks for the replies. I'll probably cut it back some after blooming since it's getting a little bit leggy. :)
