Wegman's Grand Opening

Wegmans is the best and they have everything! The bakery in itself is amazing! Unfortunately the one that is closest to me is the largest in the area and I think a lot of people go there for the novelty of it. When it opened the parking lot was JAMMED for weeks. crazy! I waited for a while to go because I didn't understand the hype. Now I do. I wouldn't want to be far from a Wegmans. I think they really are all that. So does Alec Baldwin's mom  He does some commercials for Wegmans now because his mom said how much she liked it and he talked about it on Letterman. hilarious

Wait for the hype to die down and then go shopping. You will love it!

Wegmans has great premade stuff - a lot of people go there to pick up dinner on a regular basis. Healthier and cheaper than a restaurant or typical take out, but a but pricier than cooking yourself.

I would NOT go with the intent to stock your freezer. Their meat is OK. Some stuff it really good - store brand hot italian sausage, for one. Chicken breasts at $2/lb is a weekly purchase for me. But I still go to my favorite butcher when I go to Buffalo to visit my dad.

Here in Buffalo, Wegmans is part of our culture. It's a fantastic store and you're going to love it.

But unless I was starving and it was the only place to get food, I wouldn't wait in a line that long for any supermarket.

I wouldn't either..but this is what happens whenever they open a store. A lot of times it is people that used to live close to a Wegmans and they just can't wait to see the new stores in their area.

I dread ever having to move where I'm more then 30 minutes away from a Wegman's, that includes if I ever move to FL. There is NO comparison to a Wegman's in terms of quality and selection; their prices are decent too. We live about a block from a Wegman's and actually it was part of the decision to move where we did (small part, but still relevant).

Me too. I do most of my shopping in that store, I have for over 25 years now. It is the only grocery store that I trust for meat, coldcuts, or prepared foods.

The first time I saw that commercial with Alec Baldwin I just cracked up. Yep, his Mom won't move because she is not leaving her Wegmans behind.

I used to work for them, for close to 17 years. I only left because being on my feet for 8 hours a day wasn't working anymore and I needed a job where I wasn't running around a huge store like a maniac half the day. I've been gone over 3 years now and I still refer to the store as "we" when I talk about it. I actually went down to the Hunt Valley, MD store before it opened to help train employees. Also went to Allentown, PA to train people for stores opening in other PA locations..which right now totally escapes me.

I had a brown rice tuna roll from Wegman's for lunch today - yum yum. Between Wegmans, Trader Joes and Whole Foods it's a wonder I'm not as big as a house!!

Actually, all of their meat prices are better than the competitors around here. The prices are even better if you buy the club pack. The boneless chicken breasts are locked in at $1.99 a pound until the end of the year. I plan on buying in bulk and freezing...that is a great price!!

Aren't there some Harris-Teeter store in Maryland?? They are areally nice chain too--pretty close in quality to Wegmans.

I ordered a veggie and fruit tray for DD's 16th BDay cookout on Sunday from Wegmans. I also made a grocery list on their website for other cookout items and it gives you aisle numbers! Awesome! So I guess I will be visiting there on Sunday. :)

If Wegmans ever decides to move into Florida, they will put PUBLIX in a panic!

Nobody does it better than Wegs! :lovestruc

OMG, do any other MDers rememebr when the IKEA at College Park opened? The fisrt 100 people (or something like that) were going to get a free chair. Well, some people started camping out a week or so before the store opened, and I think IKEA gave them some furniture (beds, dressers) and a huge tent. It was insane. The chair they were giving away was kind of crummy, anyway, so I wouldn't have waited one hour much less several days for one.

Funny, you should mention the Ikea in College Park. My daughter was the first person in the camp out line when that store opened. She had to put together a bedroom set, which she got to keep plus she got, if I remember correctly, $1000 in Ikea Gift Cards. They had their meals catered for the week that they were in line and had celebrities came by and visited -- my daughter has a picture of her with Barbara Eden. They were the first people to get a grand tour of the store -- one of my daughter's favorite places to shop. It was so worth it to her.

They had expected 20,000 people to be there. My girlfriend came up from Germantown to be there when the doors opened. She asked to meet up, but I passed on that one, LOL! 23,000 people applied for Wegman's cards through the Frederick store which is some sort of record.

I may go this weekend because I have coupons for free bread and milk.

Yesterday, about a mile from my house, a Wegman's opened. The traffic coming to/from is unbelievable. I read a news article today that they had people waiting in lines around the building prior to opening. It has been a madhouse. Why would anyone stand in line to go grocery shopping? I've heard it is a great store, but still....

I'm waiting about a month before I go. I figure with the huge crowds they will be sold out of everything until then.

No, but when is slows down I think you'll love it!!!!! Their produce section is great!
P.S. When I worked at the American Lung Association I honored Wegman's at one of my galas because they chose to not sell cigarettes regardless of the $$$$$$. Love Wegman's!!!!
Corporate responsibility

I love, love, love Wegman's! I grew up with them in upstate NY. Now I drive 30 miles each way (takes about an hour) to shop at Wegman's. I love their Italian sausage, club pack steaks, bakery items, no-salt added canned veggies, the international aisle, etc., etc. Customer service is first rate!

They also have a great selection of organics that penetrates all the various departments (meats, produce, dairy, canned goods, etc.) (more typical of Whole Foods).

I was one of the numbnuts in there on Sunday. I was pleasantly surprised to find they have good prices on many things. I think they are going to give Costco a good run.

DH & I love Wegmans. Nice to go to a grocery store that sells just about everything and the prices are not bad.

Her Wegmans is mine too! :rotfl: Carol lives a few miles from us near where my kids went to middle school. We don't see Alec usually, but we see Stephen at Wegs fairly often when he's visiting his mom.

Nothing beats Wegmans for consistent quality. Stores are super clean. We love their store brands. The Menu magazine they put out is awesome. Frankly, all the things that other chains do now (prepared foods, cafes, coffee bars, in-store pharmacy, kids clubs) started with Wegmans decades ago.

The STAFF is absolutely amazing, too. Almost "Disney level" in customer service. Hiring standards are high and job requirements are strict... teens around here freak out when they get an interview, scholarships for employees going off to college, good benefits (I know a teacher who quit her job to go FT at Wegmans) and its consistently ranked one of the top companies to work for in the United States. Also a big benefactor to local charities.
