Yesterday, about a mile from my house, a Wegman's opened. The traffic coming to/from is unbelievable. I read a news article today that they had people waiting in lines around the building prior to opening. It has been a madhouse. Why would anyone stand in line to go grocery shopping? I've heard it is a great store, but still....

I'm waiting about a month before I go. I figure with the huge crowds they will be sold out of everything until then.

If it's a Wegman's, I'd stand in line for their craft beer selection. :rotfl:

Ours was like that too for about a month when it first opened. :confused3 I didn't get it. It's a nice store, but not worth the hassle to me to fight the crowds. It is still a busy store, but doesn't seem nearly as bad as it was that first month.

Here in Buffalo, Wegmans is part of our culture. It's a fantastic store and you're going to love it.

But unless I was starving and it was the only place to get food, I wouldn't wait in a line that long for any supermarket.

Not here in Maryland, where the new one opened up, unfortunately. No alcohol is allowed to be sold in grocery or convenience stores here.

And did I hear correctly on the radio this morning that some man camped out 11 hours in front of the store before the opening?

OMG, do any other MDers rememebr when the IKEA at College Park opened? The fisrt 100 people (or something like that) were going to get a free chair. Well, some people started camping out a week or so before the store opened, and I think IKEA gave them some furniture (beds, dressers) and a huge tent. It was insane. The chair they were giving away was kind of crummy, anyway, so I wouldn't have waited one hour much less several days for one.

If that's true that's just crazy!

For a grocery store? Thats a little extreme, although I wouldn't be surprised. People do crazy things.

I love Wegman's and I'm there probably 2 or 3x a week for something...but I would never stand in a line around the building to grocery shop.

Once the intrigue dies down, you will really love the store. I find the prices to be better than any other store around here (Giant and Weiss).

I dread ever having to move where I'm more then 30 minutes away from a Wegman's, that includes if I ever move to FL. There is NO comparison to a Wegman's in terms of quality and selection; their prices are decent too. We live about a block from a Wegman's and actually it was part of the decision to move where we did (small part, but still relevant).

I don't think our Woodbridge, VA store has such a wait, but it was still bad.

I go there every weekend for my main grocery shopping. Prices are good, selection is good, but IMO it's not ALL that. Maybe I'm just jaded.:confused3 I do enjoy the bakery, though.

Perhaps you live by the one in Dewitt? That was the Wegmans that I envisioned when OP mentioned the traffic. It doesn't seem to matter what time or day the number of cars coming and going out of that parking lot is insane. I used to shop there whenever I headed into the Syracuse area because I love their produce and the prices are good, but now I usually find it too crowded to bother (unless DH is along-- then we have to stop for a sub ;) )

I thought about going yesterday, but just couldn't bring myself to drive up for the crowds. Glad there's a Wegmans that's not too far away! :woohoo: Now if they would only hire me. :rotfl:

Our local Wegmans carries a line of Italian cookies (Mulino Bianco) that I've never, ever seen anywhere outside of, well, Italy.

You'd think a store like that would have astronomical prices, but we find it's cheaper in most cases than Tops (our other major chain).

When the mania subsides, and the crowds die down (though they never really will die completely down, because it is Wegmans), you'll find it'll become your regular supermarket.

I saw that video yesterday and was stunned! I know I want to see this store but after watching the video, it is just a grocery store. And since that is my MOST dreaded chore (so much so that I don't even do it anymore!) I can't even get my head around the idea of waiting hours to get in. :rotfl:

See ya there in a month or so!:thumbsup2

I wish I had one closer to me. A girlfriend and I have a trip planned for this Sat with no kids, to go to Wegmans, its a two hr drive. We are bringing lots of coolers and stocking our freezers.

I love Wegmans, I was there today actually. I started going quite a few years ago because it is a great store and there was a childcare facility inside that would watch the kids while I shopped, which was an added benefit.
