Week of May 4th WISH Walking/Running Club

I went online today and bought pepper spray! I need some protection!!!

So if my DF gets a little to feisty I just pull out my pepper spray!?! :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :lmao:

I was running with my beloved chow/shepherd mix, Polly when a pack of large dogs ran up on us. Some of them were huge and it was very scary. Polly scared the big dogs off, but a dachsund that was with them jumped up and bit me on the thigh. It was a bad bite too: very deep and bloody.

A few months after I got the pepper spray, I ran into that group again. Spraying that dachsund felt SO good!

When we moved this fall, my son "tried" my pepper spray (on me and DH) as he was unpacking a box. Be sure that you don't like the person you spray, because it is miserable. Definately not for minor offenses.

Sigh...looks like it is snowing outside right now, but not sticking yet. Could be a mess tomorrow! Boot camp was cancelled tonight mostly because we got enough rain that the pathway where we were supposed to run hill repeats on was flooded. I debated running on my own, going to hot yoga or doing weights at home. I figured it was too cold outside to be out in the wet and I didn't want to get home from yoga at 10 so I opted for the weights at home. May do my own hill repeats tomorrow over lunch, but it really depends on how my work level is. Still working hard to get my area review done and ready to present to management on Monday.

French Lady Diane - Any thoughts on running QC in August? It will be my first trip to Quebec and I cannot wait!!

Dana - Tons of PD for your dog! I know how scary that can be, we had a westie that had seizure problems.

AlohaJeff - Oh evil, evil! I actually priced out airfare to LAX for that weekend. You are right, I do want that extra bling!

Who else is running the DL half? Maybe...maybe...I'll consider a solo trip...

Who else is running the DL half? Maybe...maybe...I'll consider a solo trip...

You don't want to read about how cool the extra bling is and regret not being there do you?? :rotfl: Count me and Amy in as two people who will be in DL...blingers unite!

C'mon Leana...nothing else going on that weekend....

....flat fast course.....

...and it's DISNEY....

:thumbsup2

Shan - Good luck with your surgery. Just because you're not running doesn't mean you can't post.

Leana - More snow? Unbelievable!

Jen - DD17 went to the Pirate & Princess party over spring break and swore it was the best thing she ever did. She can't wait for the chance to do it again. And MSDave - she said the fireworks were the best she'd ever seen!

Gortman65 - :welcome:

Dana - Hope your lab is okay. coming your way.

French Lady/Diane - :welcome: Living without hot water - not for me either!

Mel - Good luck to Kaley! Annie tried out for drum major but came in 2nd. Fortunately she wasn't really sure she wanted it. Now her band director wants her to try out for drum captain... stay tuned for part 2!

My world: Ran 3.4 last night. Did the first mile R4/W1, then decided to just run the 2nd mile and see how far I could go. Managed to run 7:30 before I felt like it might be a good idea to stop and walk, but I hadn't given it everything quite yet. Did the 3 miles in an 11:28 avg pace, then slowed down and walked most of the last 4/10. I felt really, really good - good enough to come home and mow the yard when I was done!

Did upper body this morning, then DD and I took the dog for a 2 mile walk tonight.

Clarification on Jeff Galloway's argument about not stretching - he said distance runners perform better/are stronger when the muscles are tight. Stretching is counter-productive. The only time he advocates stretching is for IT band injuries. I still don't buy into it, and I still stretch because I feel better when I do.

Hi, I'm in for the DL half and pretty much just for the bling!! I am going solo, flying from FLL to CA. I have an Aunt about 20 minutes away from Anaheim, so another excuse to go. I have my flight booked and hotel room for Saturday night at the Candy Cane Inn so as to be at the start line in the AM!!

BLINGERS UNITE!! (I am a crazy person)

Hi All!

Another Newbie here! The kinda short story is that I started regularly exercising after a trip to Pritikin last July. For many months that meant walking 2 miles every day - usually taking about 35-38 minutes. In recent months I was trying to step it up it a bit.

Then a couple months ago, I saw that WDW had a half marathon and thought maybe I could do that. Well, in the time it took me to wrap my head around that thought, the registration closed.
So then I saw that they had a Minnie Marathon and came up with a long range grand plan... 5K early summer, 10K in the fall (we have a big 10k run Thankgiving weekend that's really popular locally), 15K May 2009, and 1/2 marathon Jan 2010!

THEN I find out that there won't be a Minnie Marathon next May:mad:

So, here I am. Not sure what I'll run at this point. But looking forward to getting some great tips from all of you.

Oh, and I really don't want to run. I just want to get where I go fast enough to "qualify" (ya know, that 15 minute mile!)

AlohaJeff - Oh evil, evil! I actually priced out airfare to LAX for that weekend. You are right, I do want that extra bling!

Who else is running the DL half? Maybe...maybe...I'll consider a solo trip...

Leanna, forget the airfare. With your training, you could just run to Anaheim from Canada. I have to sit back and take deep breaths after reading your training posts.

WISHers, Leanna gets my vote for the person who has traveled the most since January to run races. Hasn't she earned a free frequent flier ticket by now?

Scott: "Blinger's unite", sounds like the PowerRangers. LOL. :rotfl2:

Well, since I have nothing to report (still....) - I signed Zack up for the Fitness University kids running thing-a-ma-bob. I will let you guys know how that turns out. Might not be so good since his tae kwon do class is right before the 90 min. weekly clinic. We'll see....

My big plan is to tackle 5ks this summer and get faster.

I am like Carrie's long lost twin this week - my brain is mush and I can't keep up with everyone! I am reading all your adventures though. I also think I am still upset about missing Minnie and don't want to read too much about it. :sad1:

:welcome: to all our new WISHers!

Good Morning Team: Wow, no running for me the last 2 days. I need to get back on a regular routine.

Welcome Gortman65

Joan- Thanks for the pictures from your trip. Looks like you had a great time. The PPP looks like fun!

Michelle- You made that cake! It's gorgeous! I love it.

Betsy- Thanks for the dinner offer. I'll let you know. There's a triathalon that weekend? I might have to watch.

Dana- I hope your dog's OK. That sounds kind of scary.

Allyson- Your schedule sounded like mine today too. Got home at 6:00pm and had to run out and take DD10 princess: to tae kwon do. Busy, busy...

French Lady/Diane- WTG on the 5K yesterday! :thumbsup2

Scott- Nice job on the 10K. Sounds like a really nice, relaxed run. Well, except for the thunderstorms.

Mel- I'm at the "Teaching Professor" conference at the Gaylord Palms. Cool, you'll be at WDW too. Hmmm, maybe dinner for 3 on Thursday evening? I have to admit I was very curious to go to EPCoT with no ADRs or anything, and just see where I could eat. I was planning on walking up to Le Cellier to see if anything was available, but then I don't know if I want to sit for a formal sit down dinner by myself. It would be nice to meet up... Good luck to Kaley on her audition.

Hi Bill- I'm going to try to keep up with my WISH buddies more... so hopefully I'll be able to do more posting. And anyone and everyone is more than welcome to post on the Philly thread... the more the merrier. Good luck with your race on Saturday.

Hi Cam!!! How's your hubby doing?

Hi Tracy- Congrats on signing up for the DL half. Have fun!

Cruella de Mom- Aaaaaawwww - pepper spray in the face - ow!!!

Hi Leana- Good job with your weight training. Good luck with everything at work. It sounds like you are very busy.

Hi Jackie- Good job on your run yesterday. Wow, Galloway doesn't advocate stretching? I didn't know that. I agree with you - it feels better when I do it. I'm kind of surprised by that thought.

Welcome Rpsemont- Great job with the walking, and great plan to get yourself ready for the 1/2 marathon in 2010. You can do this!

Aloha Jeff

Hi Kristi- The fitness university for Zack sounds great. Although I agree he may be pooped after TKD. I guess you'll see how it goes. Good luck with the 5ks this summer. My plan is to get more consistent again with my running/exercise plan, and to keep up with my WISH teammates more.

Have a great day all!

Dana - SO sory abotu your fur baby! :wizard:

Kristi - :grouphug: I know how hard it was whan I missed teh first Minnie.

Rpsemont - Welcome!! Looking ofrward to sharing trainign with you!

BillF - Now dh is leanign the other way, while I'm thinking how great LRs in teh fall would be. Ugh. We are way too indecisive!

Jackie - CHi does not advocate stretching either. One of teh few things I disagree with. I must stretch for my hammy.

Scott - Hmmm..must find fun race for summer meet. :goodvibes

Leana - Ever thougth of moving to a warmer climate? ;) Sad when that could include MI or WI.

Lynnday - BTW, Scott waslooking at pix and could nto get over how much Timmy has grown. He ws so itsy bisy last year fo Minnie!

OK, I finally got off my duff last night. Then again, I only got back Tuesday night, so I really only took 1 day off. Well, I missed my beginner Yoga class Tuesday, so I decided to do teh Thursday, more advanced class. WHile I did not do as bad as I thought (Only twice did I give up adn go into child mode), I know tha tI am definitely still at beginner level! :rotfl:

Happy Mother's Day to our WISH Moms adn Mons to be!

Leana - Ever thougth of moving to a warmer climate? ;) Sad when that could include MI or WI.

Carrie - I actually moved here from San Antonio almost two years ago. I remember saying something at the time about missing seasons and hating the almost year round heat... :lmao:

Carrie - I actually moved here from San Antonio almost two years ago. I remember saying something at the time about missing seasons and hating the almost year round heat... :lmao:
:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: Yeah, I don't think I could live int eh south, but snow now would be way too much fo me. Just can't win. ;)

Tracy – Great job on the 5k!!! :cool1:

Jackie – what a great run! :woohoo:

Dana – Sending hugs, sweetie! To you and your :dog:

So jealous of all you blingers going to the DL ½. Howard and I did the inaugural event in 2006. It was our first time to California and we loved the parks. The Candy Cane Inn was awesome, too! I still keep a pen from there in my nightstand and it brings happy vibes every time I use it. :goodvibes Walking to the start line was GREAT!!!

Rpsemont -- :welcome: Sorry that your plans for races have been foiled, but I’m sure you’ll find the right race for you and it will really motivate you! That’s how MOST of us got here! ;)

Dave – Thanks for asking about Howard. He is definitely in the homestretch. I think he has one more final, 2 presentations, his independent project, and the defense of that, IIRC. He should be done 2 weeks from today, I think, and graduation is May 31. I am so proud of him. He has not let up a bit, even though he has an A average and a job starting June 1. I know he was extremely disappointed with how he felt during the Minnie and with his time, but considering he’d had 2 runs of over 5 miles since January’s Goofy, I never expected him to have a PR at Minnie. I just wanted him to have the opportunity to be away for a couple days, by the friendship, love and support of the WISH team. I know he had a GREAT time, though. And he is really looking forward to training for his upcoming races - Philly ½ in September, Marine Corps in October, Philadelphia Marathon in November, and the 5k, ½ & Full at WDW in January. :faint: The man is a machine! :lovestruc I hope you have a FABULOUS trip to WDW! Can’t wait to hear about the PPP! party:

Not much to show for a workout this morning. I’ve been wiped out all week and am saving my legs for C25K W3D3 tomorrow, so I spent a lazy hour on a recumbent bike with great Disney music on my ipod and a book. :thumbsup2 My next race is the Spring Lake 5 (miler) on May 24, so I want to maintain that distance over the next couple of weeks. I was really well trained for this race when I last did it 2 years ago, and my official pace was 15:30. It is disheartening to realize I have not improved significantly since then, but If I can finish with a 15:00 pace, I'll be content.

Bride Michelle (Cosi Bella) : Been there, as I was once chased by a pit bull for two blocks. I was running back in high school, had my walkman on, looked down and saw a pair of choppers looking back up at me, and hear his nails scratching the cement sidewalk as he was peeling out with his 4 feet. I laugh now, but it wasn't funny then. The olympic sprinter Carl Lewis couldn't have caught me that day. I was FLYING!!!

lol, that is just too funny! I mean, I know what you mean, at the time it is rather terrifying, but now... so darn funny! :rotfl: I've been chased by dogs before too, and its so strange how your adrenaline just kicks in and you run so fast your shoes are practically on fire! How did you manage to get away from the pit bull? Do they eventually just give up and stop chasing you? I'm always think "I'll just hop on a car if I ever need to" but sometimes there NONE around! So if I need to outrun a dog, it'd be good to know how far I have to run! Thanks for sharing the story, I'm glad I'm not the only one who's had to go through that!!!

CB Michelle - I think the pepper spray was a wise investment...hopefully you'll never need to use it, but it's there in the event of an emergency.

So true! It is like a security blanket of sorts. I just feel so uncomfortable running out there with out some sort of protection. My neighborhood is very safe, but in todays world, you just never can be too careful. I hope it doesn't take too long to ship!
NICE job with the 6 miles in under an hour! :upsidedow

Uhmmm....you might not want to give certain people ideas. Although that could add a little spice to things.

lol! I think this "spice" is a little too hot!!! :rotfl:

I was running with my beloved chow/shepherd mix, Polly when a pack of large dogs ran up on us. Some of them were huge and it was very scary. Polly scared the big dogs off, but a dachsund that was with them jumped up and bit me on the thigh. It was a bad bite too: very deep and bloody.

A few months after I got the pepper spray, I ran into that group again. Spraying that dachshund felt SO good!

When we moved this fall, my son "tried" my pepper spray (on me and DH) as he was unpacking a box. Be sure that you don't like the person you spray, because it is miserable. Definitely not for minor offenses.

I can't believe a dachshund bit you! There is this little wiener dog that is in my neighborhood and he barks MADLY at me every time I run past him! He is this old, creaky dog that must have severe Napoleon complex b/c he acts like he is this huge thing that is going to devour me! His owner always shoos him back away from me, but that is quite scary that a little dog like that can actually do damage! I always though, ehh you just kick em if they try anything (NOT meant to sound like I am a dog or animal hater, but if something is trying to bite me, I'm going to defend myself!!!!) I think this one is too old to do anything though, thankfully!
My mom has some pepper spray and when I used to live at home, I took it with me on one of my runs with my sister. I "tested" it to see if it worked, (it did). I must have gotten some of it on my leg b/c it BURNED like a mother for about an hour! Water didn't help, nothing did!! I will use with discretion, but if I'm forced to use it, I will!!

Dana I hope that your dog is doing better! :goodvibes That is really scary!!

Well, nothing new to report here. No run yesterday due to a lot of preparing for mothers day this sunday! DF and I have to go to my parents house to see my mom, then back up here to see his mom. I have to go buy a present for my "third" mom (a really close family friend) tonight, so I may or may not be able to get a run in before we have to pack our bags and head "home" for a couple days.

OH, on a side note: Can anyone recommend any sort of strength training regimen for my mom? I am doing pilates right now to strengthen and stretch and all that, but I'm not sure that she will like pilates. She'll be running the half with me in January and really has NO idea where to start for training, so I'm trying to do 2x's the research, for myself, and for her. TIA!! :cutie:

Hi WISH Team!

Happy weekend to everyone.

Welcome to the newbies. You will love being a WISH Team member. It will make your training and events so much fun!

Michelle, I'd say your Mom would benefit best from Pilates even if it is a modified version. Core strength is very important. I'd recommend general cross training weights/machines or swimming then anything else she can fit into a busy schedule. I find that in the order I mentioned it helps my almost 58 y/o body. Best WISHes to her and you as you mosey along the training fun.

Michelle,

I totally agree with Lily (and I'm also a little biased as an instructor)...but Pilates is probably the overall best core strengthening/balancing workout. A classical pilates class may be the best idea if she has access to a studio or fitness center that teaches it. There are many things called "pilates" that are not in fact true pilates. She'll find that a true pilates class, with a certified instructor, will make the class easy to follow and help her to do the exercises correctly so she doesn't injure herself. The videos are great but I only recommend a few that are true to the Pilates method:

Pilates for Dummies: The best overall dvd imo. It has both a beginner and intermediate workout. Exercises are taught true to the form and the instructor is very knowledgeable. Mainly found on Amazon.

Stott Pilates: Anything in this series is safe and effective. Unfortunately they are a little "boring" at times but a very good pilates workout. There are dozens to choose from, can be found on Amazon, Borders, etc. I like the Core Challenge one best.

Gaiam: These workouts are a little fused with yoga but overall Ana Caban is a solid instructor.

I still always recommend taking a class, even if it's only one class, to get the flow and breathing down. Most pilates studios offer walk-in classes for between $10-$15 and it's a good way to acquaint yourself with the exercises before using the dvd. Typically there is no pressure for a commitment.

Hi there!! I just posted my bio and pic on the WISH roster thread.. :) Just got home this week from my first race ( the 5k at WDW). Looking forward to training for the Princess 1/2 now!!!

Happy Mother's Day to every mom out there. Have a relaxing weekend, and hope you all get the pampering you deserve.

To Garmin 405 or not to Garmin 405, that is the question???

My tax stimulus rebate just landed in my bank account. Hmmmmmmmmm?

I think I'll wait for the price to drop, in what, a year or two?

Lynnday - BTW, Scott waslooking at pix and could nto get over how much Timmy has grown. He ws so itsy bisy last year fo Minnie!

Funny - I was just thinking about that. He was only 5 weeks at the last Minnie, and now he's all grown up... I do love watching him grow and learn everyday, though, and he'll always be my sweet little baby! :lovestruc
BTW, great job on the advanced yoga!!! ;)

mkymsehi - Garmin 405???? Hmmm... My first thought was - Do NOT let DH see this, but he just upgraded to the 305, and I still have the 301... Perhaps it is time for me to upgrade... ;)

:welcome: to all our new WISHers!!!

Well, I'm off to pack for the Danskin Tri - yea!!! :cool1: I will check in with you all next week. Have a great weekend! :goodvibes
