I'm taking my kids down for a quick trip the week before Memorial Day. I'm a little worried about crowds and all that, my youngest is special needs and doesn't handle crowded/enclosed areas very well. Generally what are crowds like during the week? And is there anything, rides or restaurants, we just shouldn't miss?

We're all very excited as it's our first trip down there, we usually stick to our small local amusement parks.

it's going to get progressively busier as the week goes on, if last year's reports are anything to go by. Do what you really have to do earlier in the week.

Last year, and I'm hoping it's the same this year, the week before got busier, with Thurs-Sun before the holiday monday being the worst. Then everyone went home on Monday, which is when we arrived, and it was a lovely week (after the holiday monday).

If you can, going by last year, I'd try to switch weeks, but if you can't, just get the things done that must be done as early as possible. And for all days, get to the parks early-early, b/c that's always the best plan. :)

May I make a suggestion regarding your precious special needs child? I personally don't have a special needs child but there are a lot of familiies on the DIS boards that do. If you make another post specifically for special needs you will get many responses:)

My family and I are going May 17-19 so will be there before the big weekend and dont' anticipate huge crowds, but here's hoping!! Food wise, I say eat what ever you can!!! I already have a list going on things to not miss to eat like, corn dogs at DCA, monte cristos, dole whips, pommes fries and jalepino pretzels!!

Have magical time!!

Just double checking, is May 25th Memorial day?

Yep. Monday the 25th is the actual holiday this year. If it's like last year, though, I anticipate most people will be heading home that day, after partying the weekend before. (hope hope hope)

HAHA :rotfl: I'm hoping for the other side, I want people to turn up on Saturday the 23rd, leaving the whole week before hand really quiet!

I also have a special needs child who does not like crowds and enclosed areas. I don't know how old your child is but my son's stroller has been a lifesaver for us. It is his "safe" place where he can watch the crowds but not feel like he is in them. He is 5 1/2. For a few of our trips he did not even get out of the stroller. However now he loves Disneyland! The rides are great for his sensory needs. Unfortunately we usually have to go during busy times of the year.

Also be sure to get a Guest Assistance Card (GAC) if you feel that would be helpful. More info about that can be found on the disAbilities area of the board. :thumbsup2

She's almost 5 and unfortunately for us, not a huge fan of her stroller, we'll have it with us though.

I looked over at the disAbilities but it seemed that most of it was for Disney World, is the information basically the same?

I'm hoping the same thing! We're heading up to San Francisco on the 22nd so they can all arrive on that day.

Pixie and are on the same side here. :) And always will be b/c of her and my son's birthdays!

disabilities board is not geared to answer Disneyland type questions such as which is the best hotel, what are the scary rides, and weather.

disabilities board however has a community board for talking about disabilities. I am a neurovariant as is my mother and they help me deal with mean people, social skills, progressing in life, and how to handle my mother who all her life has been child like simple. She has meltdowns and needs to be talked to in a certain way. I learned a lot from that board. There is a sweet Knight in shining armor named bookworm and parents of kids with aspergers/autism and other stuff as well as adults with various limitations. That is my disboards home even though I am here too much.

disabilities has a FAQs which has a ton of helpful hints like how to handle an autistic child in parks. Get the GAC with the "stroller as wheelchair" stamp. Autistic and SID kids get overwhelmed by things so the stroller is their little haven from the world and keeps people a little away from them. Strollers are good for strapping in the runners also. For some kids the seating can provide pressure points which SID kids need sort of like swaddling.

That GAC would allow you to take the stroller anywhere you can take a wheelchair. This saves you the energy of carrying the kid and again provides a nice semi private spot for the kid. Stress and exhaustion tend to make kids more susceptible to meltdowns thus using the stroller in lines reduces likelihood of a meltdown.

Busy toys help in line like a fidget toy as well as bits of food, games, or an Ipod or other music player. Autistic kids have busy minds so you need to focus the kid on something besides the wait. If you have to leave the line because the kid cannot handle the line then tell the CM and they may let you have someone in your group hold your place in line. Sometimes but no guarantee on that..

Good planning such as MM and going to Fantasyland early helps. Many Fantasyland rides would let you use the GAC to go through the exit and are short lines. Nemo subs have a room with the movie but is darkened so bring a flashlight or something to make the darkness go away. It seats about 4 to 6 people and has two wheelchair spots and lots of room for kids to run around in. For more general tips check with the disabilities board for more info on how to deal with a special needs kid or adult in parks.

Yes, most of the info is about DisneyWorld. But the policies are the same regarding GAC's. I highly recommend getting one. It will help. :)
