Planning on coming down for first visit this week in 2012. Is it usually busy this time of year, would on site be needed for FOL?

After the 3rd or 4th, I would think crowds will drop off dramatically.

It was still somewhat crowded that week this year. I was there Wednesday January 5th and Thursday January 6th. The Studios wasn't that crowded but IoA was very crowded. Forbidden Journey was posted to be 120 minutes around 5:00 on Wednesday (we used single rider and waited 20 minutes), Hippogriff was posted at 30 minutes, Cat in the Hat was posted at 30 minutes, Dragon Challenge was posted at 20 minutes and all the shops had long lines. We went back the next day and went to Olivander's and waited about 30 minutes before it got busy, by mid morning it was reported to have a 90 minute wait. We were glad to be staying on site and have Express passes. A lot of schools don't go back until the following Monday which made it more crowded than expected.

It will probably be the same next year since we were considering going back to Orlando next year and wanted to get Free Dining at Disney which started on January 1st last year, this year it doesn't start until January 8th which I interpret as meaning they are expecting larger crowds again.
