I'm from the UK and was wondering how other people are transporting there wedding dress to Florida. Mine is a full skirted dress and I don't really want to carry it in a garment bag around the airport but I do want to keep my dress with me all the time -
has anyone ever used a travel box and carried it on to the plane?

Hi, im also from the UK and am getting a special travel box for my dress from The Empty Box Company. Apparently the box is the correct size for hand luggage requirements and come with acid free tissue paper to keep the dress in.

I have arranged to have my dress steam on the morning of the wedding though as I know it will be creased.

Hope this helps.

Hi, I too am travelling from the UK, thankfully my dress is not too big. Unfortunately unless u want to have your dress put in the hold you really have little choice, I have opted for a separate case in the hold at an additional cost but I happier its in a decent hard case, the other alternative however is to DHL your dress but again this is costly - I used to work for a major UK Tour Operator and despite all my insider info I am struggling to come up with suitable alternatives - sorry I am not much help

Have a great day though!

I carried my dress on the plane in the garment bag that I got from the dress shop. I had no issues, and the flight attendents were very helpful, epecially when they found out I was getting married in Disney!

I am doing the same as Lisa, i have a box which is supposedly carry on luggage sized. i guess the dress will fit in it!!! I will also e-mail the airline before to ask if it's ok to take the dress on the plane but i assume they are usually quite good about these things!!

I have spoken to previous brides who have used the travel boxes to transport their dresses and never had any problems with the airlines.

I personally would be fretting like mad if i had to put my dress in a suitcase in the hold, i feel so much better knowing that it will be with me and in my sight all the time. Im such a worrier i know. :p

Thanks for your responses everyone.

I too am a worrier & there is no way I will be letting my dress out of my sight either. I did go on to the 'empty box company' website and it's great and just what I was looking for but the only thing is my dress is on the large size and the biggest box I can see says 'not suitable to fit in overhead lockers' - what happens then?:confused3

Have you tried what they say about measuring your dress to see if you can make it fit in the travel boxes??

I know mine will get creased but i am having it steamed so not too worried.

Hope you managed to get something. :D

I am obviously more confident than my fellow disney wedding girls, please please bear in mind with the new laws that have recently been introduced (in place to assist baggage handlers)not to over pack any cases if they exceed in weight more than 44lbs you will be asked to either leave any excess behind or you will have to buy another suitcase and pay the excess, I know this to be true for BA, Virgin, Air 2000, Britannia at least, I was told by Virgin catagorically that they will not hang wedding dresses in the cabin.

Anyway I am sure what ever way any one chooses things will work out just fine

Well I didn't even bother to ring Virgin beforehand. I was flying Premium Economy and knew that they had a wardrobe in the PE cabin. I folded and squished my dress into a suit carrier that was also folded and I carried this as my hand luggage with my handbag which was in line with the Virgin hand luggage rules.

When I boarded the plane I saw that one of the attendants was putting a wedding dress in the wardrobe of an Economy traveller with no qualms and so I asked her if she would hang mine and yup no worries she did.

I was getting my dress steamed the day of the wedding by Caolyn Allens anyway but I thought any hanging time I could give the dress the better. But it would have fit in the overhead lockers no worries.

I'm going Premium Economy too!! I didn't know they had a little wardrobe, that's good!!

I think i will have to go to carolyn allens for steaming too although someone has told me if i hang the dress in the bathroom the steam should make the creases drop out???

Sam how far in advance on your wedding day did you get your dress steamed.

My wedding is at 4pm and I was thinking of booking Carolly Allens for around 12 - 1pm.

Oh I dunno Annette, I have trouble just getting things to drop out of blouses by hanging in the bathroom - I personally wouldn't want to risk it for my wedding dress. In order to minimize stress I'd book Carolyn Allen's for sure.

Lisa - what time are you having cosmetology round if at all ? I needed to be ready for before pictures for 10 o'clock and so I had Cosmetology and Carolyn herself both come for 7am but there were 3 of us to get ready and 3 dresses to steam/press.

I think 1pm should be just fine.

annette - I would ask the bridal shop where you bought your dress about getting your dress steamed. I didn't have my dress steamed, and it definetly didn't need it. But it all depends on what your dress is made of. Ask the bridal shop to be sure.

I better book my dress in to be steamed i think!! I have to take it there though because we are getting married at Celebration and Carolyn Allen's don't go there!! I can take it on the way though i suppose!! Better to have it booked than not be able to get the creases out!! I guess i better have the bridesmaids dresses done too!!

Or what i could do is crease my dress up in the travel box for a day then hang it in the bathroom to see if the creases come out!! That's a good idea!

annette - you can make the appointment and cancel if need be.............that is what i did for everyone who came down witrh a dress.:wave2:

I was about to post the same idea LOL as you don't have to pay Carolyn Allen in advance so you wouldn't be losing any money by cancelling unless you don't give enough notice when cancelling then they'll charge you for the full steaming.

after looking at their site we have decided to hire our suits from them so i think i will book the dress in for steaming then i don't feel guilty about cancelling it because we are still spending money there!!

Should I get the bridesmaids dresses steamed too?? It's not much more for extra dresses really.

I am probably going to book a seat for my dress. I have been told that the airlines prefer that you book a seat. It will also give me a little extra room.

I have ordered a box to pack my dress that is meant to be the size allowed by air lines for hand luggage. I hope they let me bring it on as when we phoned Airtours they said no straight off, that they would not have room to hang it up anywhere, and may as well have said that I would not be allowed it on board with me.

I'd like to see them trying to stop me with my dress, they would have a major Bridezilla on their hands making quite a loud fuss infront of all their other customers. :scared:
