How can my computer be reporting a Net Bios scan virus to my ISP if I don't have one on my PC??
Last week my ISP shut off my modem claiming that my computer is reported as having a net bios scan virus. I ran Norton antivirus and it came back nothing found but dh debuged, removed and reformated the hard drive that night , installed windows ME instead of XP like he had before. Then the ISP turned on the service again, they shut it off again on saturday claiming the same thing, so we did the same thing all over again, only this time we also had DELL scan the computer for diagnostics and again they came up with no problem found. We updated Norton Antivirus and ran their tests directly from their site, also everything came back no problem found. This morning after all of this my ISP turned the modem back on but I don't know if I'm in the clear with them, I believe THEY are the ones having a problem.
DH knows about computers quite a bit , he does not do that for a living but he knows how to fix them if a problem comes up.
Also two computer programmers that I know came to look at my computer and both said the same thing, we don't have a problem, my ISP does.
Is this possible?? TIA

You need to call them and find out exactly why, in detail, they think you have the virus.

I have tried Alex, they claim that my modem with the IP # blah blah was having too many netbios scan attempts , that's their answer, I have asked the specific virus I supposedly have and all they say is a netbios virus , they read that off the logs they get from their routers according to them.
Again nothing is detected by anyone other than them and the hard drive has been reformated. I keep asking based on what they think I have a virus and that's all I get, I ask how they did not detect this in their network before it got to me IF it in fact did and they don't know BUT they told me today they have over 100 cases like mine with the same problem today. Wouldn't that tell them that THEY may have a potential problem there?

I think the cable company is complaining that she has one of those viruses that try to scan other computers on the same network.. example she is on isp.net and her cable company is seeing her trying to connect to other computers on the isp.net network. There is a Norton Internet security software that you can get that you can use to monitor your network traffic..

Cheryl, that internet security program has been in place as long as I can remember but also I had this cable company for ISP for months now and never had a problem, again it's happening to a whole bunch of people exactly the same day?? why is it happening with one computer and not both that are hooked up on the same line? we both have the same software programs, I mean norton antivirus, the same level of protection . It just doesn't make sense.
My cable company is investigatin now....there's something really fishy about this!

I wonder if ZoneAlarm catches netbios calls. It's free, I'd check into it to see if it will catch netbios calls.

Did your husband turn off netbios on your computer? It really doesn't need to be on, and exposes your network to hackers trying to get in.

I'd get info from your ISP as to how many, when, where to, etc...

Good luck!

MsKanga,

My guess is that the computers have different IP adresses. It is weird that the problem is happening on 1 cpu but not the other.

If you can email, try emailing your tech support and abuse departments sometimes those that answer the phnoes are rushed and you should be able to get specifics and tips to help you block this.

Cheryl
