Webcam 101

New laptop came with webcam built-in & software installed. The software include a button that will easily upload a video you make to YouTube. OK, I get that part.

What else can I do with my webcam? How do I use it to communicate with others live? What software or website do I need for this? What to the receiving people need to have to receive in terms of software / webcam/ account on website...?

You can do it in many ways. Install the webcam, and you can communicate with others on Windows Live Messenger. Or you can download Skype, a free program where you can have video chats with other people with Skype.

I've just started shopping for a webcam myself, so I don't know too much about them. I'm interested in using it with Skype to make online video phone calls. It's free as far as I can tell.

You can do the same thing with AIM and Yahoo messenger.

The person you are calling would need to have a computer, a webcam and also have downloaded whatever program you are using.

Oprah always has people using Skype now, where they are filming themselves live, at home, and talking to her during her show. It's her new "interactive" portion of the show.

Will Skype work if the receiver doesn't have a webcam? Say I just want them to see me & hear me live.

How would I hear them if they don't have a webcam? Would headphones with a mic work?

I know people don't need a webcam at all to use Skype. They use it for (almost) free long distance phone service. I do think you need some special Skype phone or a special headphone & mic. I think they send you a real cheapy one. There are threads over at fatwallet.com/forums which have more info on the various Skype deals.
