Black fuzzy catepillars mean hard winters. (instead of mostly brownishred)

Next....

Red sky morning, sailors take warning.
Red sky at night, sailors delight.

If the cows are lying down, it's going to rain.

not an old wive's tale but an old farmer's phrase...
I always giggle when my DH comes in from the barn or the field and tells me that it's "gonna gust" he either sounds like his grandfather or a character from the 100 acre wood ( or was that blustery...yes, it was blustery in the pooh tale)

When the deer are near the road, its going to rain.

When the leaves on the trees turn over..stormy weather is approaching.

For every fog in August there will be one snow that winter.

It "Smells" like snow. This is actually true and once I move to Florida that's one smell I hope to never experience again! :p

The weather on the last Sunday of the month indicates the weather of the next month.

I've also heard
"Pink sky at night, sailors delight"

The first frost occurs 6 months after the first thunder/lightening. BTW, I have found this to be mostly true!

My grandpa used to also say you knew the weather was right for planting corn when the oak leaves were the size of squirel's ears.

If the pecan tree buds, no more winter frost. This is true.

Knee high by the 4th of July. (pertains to corn)

My grandfather told us this too!

BTW, on the "red sky" stuff.... I think it has some basis in science.

Halo around the moon.........snow is on the way.

If it thunders in January it will snow within 9 days.....mostly true

If you see red birds in the winter it's going to snow *or was it blue birds?*

::yes:: The smell of snow is real....as is the smell of rain.

If you've ever had a broken bone...it will start to ache when it's going to rain.

I snow stays on the ground for 3 days you will have another snow soon.
