Weather in September

I'm new here...so I'm sorry if I'm in the wrong section to post this question!

We have only been to WDW once (last May for Mothers Day) and will be returning again in September (26th). I've read the weather highs/lows and rainfall totals....what I didn't realize is that 7 out of the 13 hurricanes over the last few years have been in September! What was I thinking??!! Now, I know we will have fun in the rain, but what are the odds that we'd be evacuated??? Sorry if it's a dumb question....we are just clueless!!!! (oh, and we're a family of 4...with DS-5 and DD-15)

It's rare if ever for WDW to hit by a big high catagory hurricane. I was there in Sept 2000 and we got a catagory 1 hurricane and it was windy and raining so we skipped WDW for the day and went to the outlets in Orlando.

We were at Disney last year Sept. 7-13th and it was hot but I have also been to Disney in the summer and thought it wasn't as bad in Sept. as it was in July. We loved going in Sept. due to low crowds. It was great!

IT is VERY HOT & HUMID!! We had 2 afternoons of quick rainshowers the week were there. WE went the last week of Sept. 07. We are hoping the go the same week as you for free dining this year.

We were there in September the weather was super hot!

Ponchos were a necessity especially if you have dinner or lunch reservations and you don't have time to wait till the storm ends.....
It never rained the entire day - just for about 15-30 minutes at a time..
We learned that the hard way..

I was in Disney last year Labor Day week and am going again this year same time.

It's hot and humid in Sept - but I don't remember it being unbearable last year - just drink lots of water.

The big variable in Sept is rain - we hit it right last year - no rain when we went - just a few drops one day. Yet the week before we arrived and the week after we left there was rain.

It is hurricaine season, but Orlando usually isn't greatly affected - except for rain.

I just made sure I had ponchos with us. The crowd levels in Sept. are low and the times I've gone that month, I've had a good time.

We lived in Orlando when Hurricane Charley hit in 2004. Wind gusts were clocked over 130mph at Kissimmee airport. The eyewall came over DTD, where winds were around 105mph sustained.

WDW closed mid afternoon the day it hit. It passed around midnight. WDW was open around 10am with most of the damage cleaned up or roped off. A bit of trivia: when taking the Epcot monorail, look into the woods east of World Drive. They used to be much thicker. Charley cleared out a lot of pine trees, and bent what was left.

The day of the hurricane, people were advised to stay in their rooms. Other than closing the parks, there was no evacuation.

Also was there last year for Ike. There were a few heavy rainshowers, 20-30mph winds. The parks remained open for business.

We have learned that you do not need to change your schedule, unless you fly in or are concerned about gas availability. During Charley, the airport closed around 2pm, and there was no gas anywhere for 100 miles.

Being just a little obsessive, I actually looked up the tracks of past hurricanes with specific dates to get an idea of how likely one is to pass near WDW during our dates (close to yours - we arrive on the 25th Sept). If it makes you feel any better, since 1980 there have been 7 named storms that passed withing 65 miles of WDW in Sept & Oct, and only 2 were that late in the month. Early Sept is much more active, hurricane-wise.

My only real concern with hurricanes is my flights. I'm not worried about being there for a hurricane. By all accounts, Disney isn't a bad place to ride one out and they get park operations back to normal very quickly. I just don't want to have my trip ruined/delayed by an airport closure that leaves me stuck here at home!

I actually just watched a Youtube video of Hurricane Charley hitting WDW. It was like you said, around noon they announced the closing of the parks. Then the next day it was pretty clear and sunny, but a lot of uprooted trees and such. We are going end of August this year, so we are a little concerned with Hurricanes, but seeing that video made me realize we would more than likely only miss a day at the parks. (fingers crossed)

Ok, you are all making me feel better! We are driving down so I'll have to make sure we fill up early so we don't have that issue! Didn't even think about it! But don't have to worry about a plane not leaving. So it is odd then that a hurricane would hit Orlando?! Shew! I hate the rain..but can deal with it..it's the 100 mph winds that I'm not keen on!

We went down in May last year (our first time). It was hot, but not unbearable. Is September pretty close to May weather? It was 90 with a 92% (I think-it was REALLY high) humidity in May....September isn't worse than that is it??? I'd love to go down in November when it's nice and 'cool'....but Free Dining is only through September so...........

Sept is the peak of the Atlantic Hurricaine season ( June-Nov 3oth)One thing to ease your mind...when there is a hurricaine projected for Fl , they evac the coastline TO the Orlando area.If a hurricaine hits Orlando , you will be confined to your hotel room for the duration of it( really no biggie) The Disney resort is very very good with hurricaines.The weather in Sept is still very very Hot and very humid with daily rain showers.

We were at WDW last year 26th Sept for fourteen nights, Not one spot of rain. Beautiful weather,very hot. Hope it's nice for you too .

It is not odd for a hurricane to hit Orlando. It is rare for a Catagory 3 or higher to hit. Because of it's location, hurricanes lose a lot of punch before they reach Orlando.

Yes, almost identical weather.
