That is just great!! We sail May 26 and have been over the top excited about this all year. After reading negative weather related trip reports, I was a little concerned, but hoped this time of year would be okay and now this. What should I do? How bad does it get for them to cancel the cruise? Do they rebook you or what?

Hi fellow weather watchers...
I just wanted you to know from a Fla. resident who is going on the 5/25 western. We have had some really rough seas and big wind out by the port but personally I'm not worried. When we went on our first cruise, disney of course, we had to dodge 2 hurricaines, and I have never felt safer during a storm! We lived in Utah then, and I was worried, but the captain really knows his stuff. We did have to go to Key West instead of St. Maarten, (awww, is that so bad?) but we didn't have any trouble from the waves because the ship is so darn big some people were down in the medical office popping dramamine like candy before we even left port, but even though the waves at sea were over 20' the ship was barely bobbing. We had a blast, and the captain came on the intercom and the in-room tv often to tell us what was happening, and it was no biggie. Now, remember, this comes from a paranoid weather watcher who is scared to death of storms, so make of it what you will... Renae

They won't cancel your cruise! Ever!!

You might be rerouted north or south away from the storm and they will do their best to make the changes as smooth as possible.

I suppose that I would agree, except for the word 'ever' or 'never'. I'd say it is very unlikely that your cruise would be cancelled because of weather, but I wouldn't use the word never.

It's usually safer for the ship and the passengers to be out at sea instead of in port when a storm is approaching. The Captain will do everything in his power to avoid a storm and rough seas and they have excellent equipment and communications with the experts on land.

I would also feel very safe onboard the ship during a storm.

I agree. I would never let weather be a major concern. I would rather be on a ship that can move away from any severe weather, than to be stuck on land with something coming to towards you. Cruise lines constantly monitor the situation from a command center at their home office during bad storms. They also contact ports to acquire docking rights in case the ship has to deviate from it's scheduled ports. The cruise lines are experts at this and they aren't going to do anything to put their passengers or crew in danger. You just have to always understand that if you sail around the hurricane season, you may not reach the ports you thought you were going to and understandably so. If you make it to fewer ports than scheduled, the lines frequently will give you credit onboard.

We were once on a smaller ship in September '99 and water was coming over the promenade deck and it was closed off. I still felt very safe even in rough seas. This ship was a third of the size of the Disney ships though. Ships cross the rough Atlantic all the time. Don't worry.. A cruise vacation is the best no matter what the weather is like.

When I went on the Magic we had a tropical depression and let me tell you, the ship is big but it DOES rock & roll in rough seas! Could not walk in a straight line down the hallways and a lot of people felt ill. If it's gonna be rough, take Bonine as a preventative measure before you set sail.

Okay, so maybe I won't die, but will I still get my money's worth? I didn't think I had booked during hurricane season! I want to go to Castaway Cay! I don't want chairs, shoes, etc.. blowing across the deck and have to be stuck inside somewhere. I know that's a chance we take, but I thought a tropical climate could offer me better odds. Might there still be some sunshine to be had? How long does bad weather/hurricane pressures take to run their course. I have until Sunday night!

I don't think you have to worry about being hit by flying chairs. Last August when we left St. Thomas a storm was coming, in fact it rained and stormed almost the whole day there. The crew was preparing before we left. The had everything tied down that could move. The ship left port and we went around the worst of it, we still managed to get to CC the next day at noon. Stayed an hour longer on the CC and had the kids show in the a.m., along with free drinks before docking. The Captain was telling us his every move, and why he was doing it. Also had storms and high seas in August 2000, but we never felt unsafe and had a great time. They do everything they can to stick to the original destinations as long as it is safe.

Hi everyone,
I have good news for you. I just watched the noon news and the storm is weakening enough that they aren't even going to send a hurricaine watch plane into it. It doesn't look like it will get organized enough to be even a tropical depression. So if you were worried don't be, right now it's over the caymans but is supposed to go out east of Fla. and out of our way by Sunday at the latest. We're counting the hours now, and I think this can't help but be the best cruise ever! My family is so PUMPED!!!

The weather reports on Saturday seem very good and it looks like the tropical depression didn't turn into anything.

The report for Sunday in Key West also looks very good.

hope it turns into a non-weather event for the DCL cruisers for the entire week.
