We would love to just buy a unit

We always say we want to just buy, for our very own, a 2-bedroom dedicated unit at Saratoga Springs. We really would pony up the $$$ if they would let us. We love it that much. I wonder how much that would cost just to let us have our own place? We are looking forward to seeing about the new construction on the west side of the property ... hmmmm.

It's funny when we first bought into DVC we used to joke that we owned a doorknob on the property somewhere ... and with each add-on we now own the door jam and maybe someday we will own the whole entire ... door!

As much as we have paid for our little piece of Disney heaven, I cannot imagine how much an entire two-bedroom unit would cost ... probably more than my 5 bedroom/3 bath home in California!

At this point I just have to be satisfied that I get to spend a little time at "home" in WDW!

Actually, I think there is a limit to the number of points any one person can own at a resort. I never paid much attention (we aren't in the financial position to ever worry about that rule!), but maybe someone else will post the details.

It would be fun, but not doable for a couple of reasons.

1. Disney can't have private property residences on it by Florida law. Don't know all the implications, but it affects things such as zoning, taxes, fire, police, trash, government, etc. (EG who would be your Mayor, Councilman?)

As DVC members, we don't actually own property. We are leasing property, and the leases have expiration dates. Effectively the money we paid was used to build the property, but Disney owns it, and gave us a right to use clause that lasts up to 50 years.

2. If you didn't build a personal residence, but just purchased enough points to actually stay in a DVC villa for the entire year, keep in mind that you would have to move every so often. I think it's every 3 months. Something about if you stay more than 3 months you are considered a resident of the property. And if I'm not mistaken, you can't just move to another DVC property. You have to move completely out of WDW for a couple of weeks, or something like that.

Maybe some other poster can furnish the exact details.

Well maybe they could take a Disney cruise every 3 months or something - LOL! That would get them off the property.

What an interesting idea - a pipe dream but fun to think about.

I've dreamt about this too. Unfortunately, you are limited to 2,000 points at an individual resort and 5,000 total. I'm guess you could buy 5,000 and your spouse could buy another 5,000. But that seems to still leave you a bit short. I calculated that you would need about 10,250 points to live in a 1-bedroom at OKW for a year. But if you took a week off around the holidays, I think it could be done. The problem would be that you would not have all your points be home resort at OKW and may have to be on the waitlist off and on. I guess that would be a small price to pay to live at WDW. If something happened and you couldn't get your 1-bedroom, you could stay in a studio at another resort for a week.

Let's see:
10,250 points at $90 a point = $922,680 (What a bargain!)
Maintenance this year would have run you about $46,000.

Oh well, I guess that is a dream for winning Power Ball.

This is something I have pondered about on more than one occasion. One of the above posts is correct, in that the Reddy Creek Improvement District can not have permanent "residents." Thus, when Disney agreed to allow private residences as part of the Four Seasons project, those lots were de-annexed out of the property. While I'm sure it is doable through creative purchasing (i.e. separate contracts for husband and wives) I'm sure there would be some inconveniences in order to pull it off. Maybe one day I'll hit a huge lottery and live 28 days a month at Disney and spend 1 weekend a month at home, instead of the opposite as it is now

Just curious, how much were you planning on spending?

My recollection of the enabling legislation is that it did not rule out residents on the property. The problem is that residents can vote and voters can affect government in ways that Disney might not find acceptable. Thus Disney has no permanent residents other than those approved by Disney. When Celebration was built they had to de-annex the property.

But I agree that it would be a great way to live. Even though the dues would be expensive, it would include all interior expenses that most condos are not responsible for.
