My DH and I just returned from 4 nights at BCV (LOVED this place), and 2 nights at the AKL. We stayed for 2 nights at the AKL in Nov. and really liked it, so when we got a postcard rate good until Feb. 13th, we decided to stay there again for 2 nights. Anyways, our experience there this time around was really bad:( In our first room (on the 4th floor), the people in the adjoining room argued loudly in a foreign language late at night. We finally called the front desk after midnight, and the night supervisor walked past their room to see if she could hear it too. Of course she could (they were LOUD!), so she called them to tell them to knock it off and then called us twice to make sure that they had. I did ask her if we should move to another room, but she said that it usually only takes one phonecall to put an end to noisy guests. Well, they did stop arguing for a few hours, but they started right back up again very early in the AM!

Anyways, we only got 3 hours of sleep that night, so I went down to the front desk to request that we be moved to a quieter room. They moved us to the 2nd floor. In that room, we had an adjoining room that housed a child who literally screamed until well past midnight. This was not an infant. It was a child who was old enough to talk and was clearly refusing to go to sleep. We didn't call the front desk this time, because we figured it was useless. The child finally quieted down around 1AM, but then we realized that we could hear the people upstairs from us pottying loud and clear. We heard this and a toilet flushing over and over all night  DH thinks that the toilet was broken because it flushed at regular intervals for the entire night. I don't think that this hotel has any sort of soundproofing at all! We would NEVER pay to stay there again. I really wish that I'd listened to the complaints about AKL that were posted on these boards in the past. It would have saved us two sleepless nights!

You mentioned that you stayed at AKL in November and really enjoyed it. That's great. We've really enjoyed all of our stays at AKL. Isn't the resort such a wonderful place? Where else can you step out onto the balcony and see such a wide array of wildlife? The theming, the wonderful aromas from Boma. I wish I was there now.

Sorry to hear about the loud guests, since they specifically seem to be the cause of your bad stay most recently.

The guests next to us were definitely loud, but I think that the real problem is that this hotel lacks soundproofing:( I mean, you should not be able to hear the people above you pottying in a hotel. That was just so gross! I think that when we stayed in Nov., we didn't have anybody next to us or above us. We stayed at a very slow time of the year there that time I guess. You're right about the themeing and decor of the hotel, though. It is really great! We'll definitely still have dinner at Jiko on our next trip...we just don't want to stay in such a noisy place again.

If you were bothred by the noise there then don't even think about staying at one ot the AS's!

Too bad you had such a problem. The only noise we had there was a very loud lady on the adjoining balcony discussing someones prostate surgery in great detail on her cell phone for about 45 minutes one afternoon. Yuck!!

I am sorry that your AKL was not as wonderful as your first stay. I have stayed at AKL twice and fell in love with it. I am taking my 2nd niece there June 1-5 and hope that I have another wonderful experience.

My stay at ASMo (twice) was wonderful, but I can remember that the walls seemed to be a little thinner as we could hear talking, etc.

One of my hotel golden rules.

CLOSE the bathroom door at night. I have stayed in some VERY nice hotels where I was woken up by flushing toliets, showers, etc....Plumbing just makes a good sound conduit!

As for the people next door, if you have connecting rooms it is always a problem. My personal fav is people who try to "BREAK down" the door to see if they can get in your room. However, my revenge is usually to make sure I turn the TV UP VERY lound when I beat them up the next morning!

It seems as though it is not the resort that is the problem, but the guests. This would never cause me not to stay in a certain resort again... as you could have encountered the same problems in any resort, regardless.

As someone else said, toilet sounds unfortunately do carry... and had you not been disturbed by the neighbors, you likely would have slept through it.

Now, I feel sorry for the guests who have to stay next to us, as my husband's snoring would wake the dead... DD and I use earplugs...lol!

Carol--

We had kids at the BC one time who kept opening and then slamming the connecting door. You should have seen the look on their faces and heard them scream when I opened the door just as they opened their side, went "BAH!!!" and then slammed the door in their faces. It was quiet as could be after that :)

Oh tell me about it. One night I woke up at 3:00 AM because some bimbos were jumping and screaming in the pool...

I called the lobby and the noise was taken care of. Stayed there two more nights and it never happened again.

But with such loud guests you wonder if they weren't trying to "fit into" the wild decor!

OK, that was bad but I was trying to cheer you up... People like that wake me up twice and before *I* change rooms, they are expulsed!

People who come from a barn don't ruin *our* vacation

I opened a door one time and asked a kid if she had parents. She looked at me and I told her to go to them and not to leave their side again! I have no idea what she told them, but.... why was this child allowed to run up and down the hall screaming with no adult around. What if I had been a child molestor? How would her parents have known where she had gone?

Having only stayed at ASMO and the Polynesian, I found the soundproofing wasn't as good in the Polynesian as the All Stars. I'm sure it was the guests and not the resort itself but we did have a few sleepless nights at the Poly. We also had a guest who talked on his cell phone very loudly on the patio next to ours. It was very annoying. We would still stay at the Poly again regardless of the poor soundproofing. If you truly loved the AKL you should try it again in a couple of years and hopefully you'll have a better stay.
