We went to Mexico last week and came home sick! What do I do?

Actually, we did see armed guards patrolling the area (Puerto Vallarta) when we were there.(Feb. 22, 2011) We took a city tour the first day we were there and the city was filled with tourists. There were two cruise ships docked. We saw no armed guards then. But later that same week, we were walking on the Malecon and the other nearby tourist areas, and we saw them on many on the street corners. I thought it odd that they weren't there earlier in the week when the city was overflowing with tourists. We did opt to spend more time at the resort and the pool after that. However, their presence didn't really make me nervous, but just more aware of my surroundings. We also saw armed guards outside of the airport. We stayed in the Marina area and felt perfectly safe there and the resort. Actually, I have felt less safe in downtown Chicago and more safe in Mexico. However, bad things can happen anywhere. I really did enjoy getting to see this beautiful city and learn about the Mexican culture.

Just heard on the news tonight that the Feds have issued a warning that US citizens should avoid Mexico for spring break. They said that robbery, sexual assault and kidnapping are up in the resort areas such as Cancun.

Send the spring breakers to Florida!

I don't see Florida (Orlando, Tampa, Miami, etc) being any safer if they're basing that on robbery and sexual assualt. :confused3

I think the operative words are "resort areas." Obviously Florida (like ANY state) has dangerous areas, but those generally aren't "resort areas." I wouldn't compare any tourist area in the U.S. to those in Mexico right now. It's just too unstable.

Orlando does have its share of crime, but most tourists will never experience it unless they decide to hang around Pine Hills.
