We went to Mexico last week and came home sick! What do I do?

Well she did also take her daughter to Mexico so it does make sense to me.:rotfl:

Even though this statement probably could've been put in a different way, I have to agree with it.

Mexico is one of the most dangerous places to be right now.. why risk it?

I think that depends on where you go in Mexico. What do you mean?

My parents just got back from a trip to Progresso and Cozumel and loved the area. No illnesses, no crime (that they experienced).

Please. Stop it. No, Mexico is NOT one of the most dangerous places to be. Parts of Mexico are dangerous, not the whole country. The Yucatan Peninsula and other parts are safe and fine for tourists.

Are you aware of the size of Mexico? It's like saying you won't travel to Florida because of violence in New York.

Be glad you came back alive, a lot don't. Hope she gets better. Sounds bacterial to me, but I do not play a doctor on TV so I don't know for sure.

Really.:confused3 So all those cruise ships to Cancun, Cozumel, Progreso, and Costa Maya...I guess they're missing "a lot" of there passengers on the trip back. I think you may be exaggerating just a weeeee bit. Certainly parts of Mexico are very dangerous these days and certainly there is the chance that you could be killed in a drug deal gone wrong. But heck, i live in Atlanta. I could be killed in a drug deal pretty much any day now but it doesn't stop me from going out to eat, going shopping, and site-seeing when i feel like it. \

I think that if it were a HUUUGE problem, the cruise lines wouldn't continue to take people to those ports which are deemed pretty safe. It woudn't be in their best interest to dump off 3,000 tourists if they thought that "a lot" of them woudn't come back alive.

ETa: We're headed to Cozumel in about a month. If y'all don't hear from me by mid-April, send in the Marines.

I am sure there are still some pleasure boats in the Indian Ocean too. That doesn't make it smart. Mexico is highly dangerous even in resort areas. And to not know and rask what to do about a stomach bug you got their amazes me. I live in CA so have been to mexico so many times I can't evven count. We know all about the parasites you can and do catch there. First sign of one we would head to a dr. My mom got one so bad she was incoherant for over a week. Mexico especially now is nothing to mess around with. Even in the resort areas.

Sometimes I think I'm from another planet. Of course you call a Dr., not ask about it on a Disney chat forum.

These diseases have a habit of coming back just when you think you're well. (I learned this the hard way).

Definitely seek medical advice from a doctor! :thumbsup2

Hope you feel better soon!

You can pick up a stomach virus anywhere. Go with cleaar fluids, use pepto and get some acidophilus. Acidophilus restores the flora in the intestines if it's been destroyed by a virus or even an antibiotic. When she does introduce food, make it the BRAT diet-bananas, rice, applesauce and toast. These things are highly digestible. Stay awy from raw things, for a while and greasy, spicy food. If the symptoms don't leave in a week, then contact your doctor. She most likely caught a virus. I've been to Mexico-all over-many times and not gotten sick. People who get sick on vacation often get it from eating or drinking things or amounts they are not accustomed to. Or-tourists get sick in vacation destinations and can not isolate themselves because they are not at home so they spread their illnesses pretty easily. Your daughter probably infected the people on the plane sitting around her as these things are often airborne. Don't panic about parasites and horrible illnesses. I was a travel agent for 27 years, sent people all over the world and only heard of about a handful of people who got parasite infection. I worked with all the international travel at the largesty university in the country. All of those people had gone way off the beaten path or really irresponsible. It's possible but not likely. I hope your daughter feels better very quickly.

Catching a disease and dying from violence are two different things. Plus you can get stomach bugs from lots of places you visit not just Mexico. :confused3

There's crime going on in touristy areas as well. Don't think that I'm stupid. I live in San Diego, and used to go over the border often. Now I don't. I also have had friends who would travel to Mexico for vacations.. all around Mexico. Right now it just isn't the right time to do it. It's still one big country. Criminals from New York can easily travel to California without getting caught. Same thing can happen in Mexico.

I'm a travel agent. I book families all the time to Mexico with no problem at all. It's one of my best sellers. There is crime in some measure everywhere one travels. But, to condemn an entire very large country because of pockets of severe violence IS stupid.

The state department has travel warnings out for Mexico because of the violence right now.

I can only speak for myself, but I certainly won't be scheduling any trips to Mexico anytime in the near future. There's plenty of interesting and beautiful places right here in the U.S. to keep me busy for a long while.

Wow, that's rude.

Cozumel was GORGEOUS!! Seriously. We were there a couple weeks ago and I still miss it. :sad1:

Ironically enough, we did leave a couple people in Cozumel that never made it back to the ship. I'm pretty sure they weren't dead, though. ;)

How many people were shot/stabbed/beaten and killed today in NYC? Chicago? Milwaukee? Atlanta? Houston? Dallas? Denver? San Francisco? LA?

There are many cities in the US that are just as dangerous, if not more so.

I was just in Mexico on a cruise. It was gorgeous there and the people were some of the friendliest I've encountered in my travels.

I wouldn't think twice about visiting a resort or "tourist" area.

Not nice to call people stupid. Maybe you can declare that my logic doesn't match your's, or that you have a different opinion.. but why call me stupid? Where does that get us?

Exactly. This is where I'm coming from.

My DS just got back from a business trip to AZ. He had the EXACT symptoms the OP described. It was a flu virus not covered by the shot. It took him several days to get over it. He's been back home a week and he's been fine.

Crime in Mexico is such an issue that cruiselines have cancelled ports and there are State dept warnings. Going to Cozumel is not the same thing as going to other parts of Mexico. Cozumel is a separate island and hasn't had the drug and crime problems other parts of the country have.

I went on the state department's site and no where on there does it include the Yucatan, i.e. Cancun, Riveria Maya, Cozumel. I would feel and have felt perfectly safe there.

I didn't feel safe years and years ago going to Tijuania, so I'm not surprised it is on there today, along with other border towns.
