We rented points for Oct. Can owners get their points back if we cancel?

We rented from www.dvcrentalstore.com for an October trip. We are scheduled to take a cruise that I'm not sure we're going to take. Thinking of cancelling both cruise and WDW stay. I contacted our agent and she is dealing with imminent cancellations right now. Since nothing has been officially cancelled for October yet, my reservation isn't a priority. My question is: can the actual owner of these DVC points get their points returned to them and not lose their points/money?

They would get their points back. How “usable” those points would be depends a lot on the owner’s UY, whether they are past their banking deadline, if they had to borrow points to make your reservation or if the reservation was made with banked points. IOW, just because an owner gets their points back, that doesn’t mean that they can use them.

Only if the reservation is cancelled at least 31 days prior to arrival. See Marionette's post for add'l info on usability of the returned points.

The broker you rented from may not allow refundable cancellations or changes. Depends on your contract and the broker's policy. I would be surprised if the broker will issue a refund or allow a change for an October reservation if you signed a non-refundable agreement. Most expect the DVC resorts to be open well before October.

Thank you for the insight, I really appreciate it.
Also, whoops and sorry for mentioning the name of the agency. We have used them in the past and they are fantastic. Didn't realize I shouldn't name them here.

We are DVC owners ourselves but supplement trips by renting points sometimes. It's worked out great, until this year of course. It's all insanity right now. We are hoping for the best.

see if you can get it transferred to you instead? If you don’t want to be out of the funds and if they are willing to?

That would depend if the owner of the points had not used their once a year transfer already. They can't transfer the reservation, but they might be able to transfer the points if they were not banked or borrowed points. And, depending on the UY, could the renter/new owner still be able to bank them if they are still within a banking period (and they weren't already banked).
