We picked our first watermelon...

last night. The vine was starting to brown a little and the watermelon was a "monster". DD weighed it on the bathroom scales and it came in at 30 lbs. It's the largest one that we have. It was a beautiful red and very sweet.

So, to the amazement of my husband, I did it!!! He told me I'd never have them amount to anything because of our soil.

So, I guess we are going to be watermelon picking fools over the next few weeks.

DD took a picture with her cell phone camera but I can't figure out how to post it. As soon as I get some help, I'll post it here. But, the picture really doesn't do it justice.

30 pounds. WOW!!! That's really a good sized watermelon. I know you had fun watching them grow. Now comes the real fun. Eating them. When you get to the point that watermelon is coming out of your ears, you can pick out the seeds and freeze them in chunks for watermelon slushies this winter. oooooooooo yum!!!

I went to Krogers yesterday in search of a whole watermelon to buy, and there were none! They only had cuts for 49 cents a lb.
