I live in Kansas City too, the Missouri side, and have lived there all my life and NEVER seen a tornado. Yes there will be hail, wind, and thunderstorms, in May and June, but Tornado's are rare near the Kansas City area Kansas City is a very nice city, but who ever said Overland Park is pricey is right, its in Johnson County one of the richest counties in the United States, so if you looking for other options you might want to consider Shawnee Mission, or Mission Kansas. Almost all the Kansas schools are really good, if your looking on the Missouri side Park Hill school district (in Platte county) and Independence school districts are also very good too.
Flights, very few people have mentioned Southwest, we are a mini-hub for them, and you can fly to almost any major city on them non-stop. Midwest Airlines is another good airline known for their all semi-1st class service, and decent fares plus they also offer several non-stops. When we have flown to Florida we have usually paid around $160-$180 a ticket, almost always during the summer months and almost exclusively on Southwest.
As far as traveling, compared to most major cities Kansas City is very spread out, which can be a good thing and a bad thing as there is a little more travel involved between the suburbs, the good news is if your in Kansas, downtown is only about 20 minutes away, in Missouri.
Last point, since your moving to the Kansas City area be sure to check out Silver Dollar City our big Theme Park to the south in Branson, I love it, the customer service is on par with Disney, the food is wonderful, and the rides are great. The Old Fashioned Christmas celebration they have every year around December cannot be missed. Branson is about 3.5 hours south of Kansas City.
