Saturday night my son suddenly had this horrible tooth paing so I called first this morning when they opened and they got him in this afternoon. Turns out it was an abcess and there was another on the other side! My choices were 1) have two root canals or 2) have them both pulled!!! :-( I feel terrible for him. He was so brave! But I am so sad to see him go through this, Plus, we leave first thing in the morning for Disney and now he will be dealing with this! :sad1: Can't just eat and have a carefree vacation!

I have guilt, of course, that I didn't notice anything earlier and wasn't more proactive. I cried the whole time he was with the dentist, but he's being such a trooper!:goodvibes I just hope he has some relief now and he can enjoy the trip without pain!

Dawned on me, too, that when we last went to Disney 10 years ago and my oldest was the same age he came down with nasty strep throat the afternoon before we left and HE had to be rushed to a doctor and pharmacy for meds.:confused3

Awww, poor thing. Don't feel guilty, the exact same thing happened to my dd7 last year. I had no idea she had an abcess until I saw that her cheek was bulged out! Poor thing! We do not examine our kid's mouths everyday:goodvibes

Have a wonderful Disney trip, we are waiting for our first trip coming up in 22 days!!!!

Don't feel bad. You did the right thing. Two root canals would have been a lot worse! (Of course, I assume these are baby teeth??)

Did he get antibiotics? He should feel a lot better and be able to eat soon!
Hope you all have a great trip!:wizard:

Random musings:

No drinking straws for anyone in the family during this trip. I'm told that sucking on something can cause complications with tooth extractions.

Encourage him to eat more slowly and encourage dilly dallying at meals. take a tiny bite at a time, never a mouthful. Chewing too fast increases the chance of a bitten tongue. Not chewing food well increases the chance of indigestion.

Last activity before going home a meal? Do it at the airport instead of at Disney. This way the meal and not your airplane flight will give way if something goes wrong.

Had he gotten root canals, he could have been told not to take airplane trips for a few days.

Poor thing! Don't feel guilty - it is much less painful to have two teeth pulled than to have root canals - you did the right thing! I hope he feels better soon. There is nothing like disney to help forget about pain. Have a wonderful and magical trip!

:thumbsup2 You did the right thing. It is so hard being a parent. Sometimes it breaks your heart, especially to see one of your babies in pain. But the hard part is over and in a day or so he'll be fine. Just keep the motrin available. Hey he's going to WDW what a great treat after being a trooper. I bet he'll have the time of his life and forget all about the pain. Have a great trip and enjoy!!!

My DD8 just had 2 teeth pulled. She probably COULD have gone to Disney the next day, it never slowed her down a bit! Cut up the food in small bites, no srinking thru a straw, take some gauze pads with you in case the clot gets dislodged and it starts to bleed. And have fun!

kids are so resilient....these things "hurt" us parents way more than it does them. I bet he will shock you at how he bounces back. Keep up the fluids during the trip and no straws and all will be good. It is a great reason to eat extra ice cream !!! Have a great trip :)

And just think...How much better is it that it happened right before your trip and not during!!! That's the bright side.:goodvibes

My dd7 had 3 teeth pulled a few months ago and went back to school that afternoon! I bet you will be shocked at how fast he rebounds, I was! I hope you find the same result and have a wonderful vacation!

I am so sorry! I hate having dental issues, they are the worst. My first thought though was at least he will be at Disney tomorrow and I can't think of a better thing to get your mind off things. Have a great trip!

Man, that's rotten.

BUT, ime, that's not going to be a problem. Our kids both have small mouths, small enough that the dentist pulls baby teeth to make room for adult teeth. This alters their diet for 2 days (mushy or soup), and I give them tylenol the first 24 hrs. And then, they are fine and dandy.

Our youngest got the pleasure of starting to lose baby teeth while we were living overseas. The first week of his four week summer in the US, the dentist pulled 4 top teeth (he had lost the middle two). The day before we flew from Kentucky to the Netherlands, she removed 6 from his bottom gum. It made no difference whatsoever, except that he couldn't eat corn on the cob. Within 24 hrs, he was his normal self, just a bit self concious.

Surely your son will enjoy Disney more with those teeth gone than with those teeth hurting (and possibly forcing you to find him a dentist in Mouseland).

I hope you have a really good time. :-)

I know how you feel but don't beat yourself up over it. My dd5 had 2 absessed teeth just after she turned 4 - her jaw swelled so bad her eye was closed shut. The teeth backed up her sinuses (or vice versa) and she ended up with a huge knot in the roof of her mouth. She ended up spending 5 nights in the hospital and having dental surgery. They still don't know if the sinuses caused the teeth problems or the teeth caused the sinus problems. After the teeth were pulled she recovered very quickly.

Don't feel guilty! I had an abcess years ago and it really only took about two hours to go from normal to extreme pain. There would probably not have been anything to see even if you had been looking, and like a PP said, we don't inspect our kids mouths every day once they've got the whole brushing thing down, anyway. Have a wonderful trip!

My 17 year son had a urinary tract infection the day before we left for Hawaii a few years back. It's just Murphy's law that your child is going to be sick or hurt right before you leave on vacation.

there's no medicine like disney magic. i wish someone would have taken me to disney to cheer me up after getting my widsom teeth pulled! have a great time!!
