We knew it...we just knew it would happen

Two years ago my DH and some friends ran the Goofy race (1/2 marathon on Saturday and full marathon on Sunday). Last year a few of them ran "just" the marathon. One of our friends was signed up to run it but cancelled at the last minute. Okay things happen. This year our friend signed up for the marathon again. DH said he wasn't going to go because he "been there done that". DH said he would run the Goofy if our friend did just not the marathon. Our friend changed his registration from Marathon to Goofy. DH signed up for the Goofy. They both have been training all year. Fast forward until today................DH get a text from our friend telling us he will only be running the marathon. He will fly into Florida on Saturday, run the race on Sunday and fly home Sunday. DH is a little ticked because the only reason he was going was for his friend. We are scheduled to be there from Thursday -Tuesday. It will still be nice to get away without the kids but I don't really feel like going now. There are several other places I'd rather go next year. Now we have less than two weeks to figure out if we still go or whether we change our plans. I feel bad for DH since he trained all year to run 39.3 miles. We would be out about $300 for the registration fee but at least we wouldn't be out anything else.

Would you go or would you cancel? We're:scared1: not sure what to do.

Okay--that would irritate me.

The people that have promised to run with me, did so--even if they didn't train. They were hurting, but they fulfilled their promise.

I did the goofy once, I've done in total, the marathon twice and the half twice.

IS this the same friend that jilted him before? Did they say why they are dropping down? I can see if there is an injury or concern to not complete both, but you just don't decide on a whim to bail like that.

I think it is pretty crappy that the friend notified him via text as well.

Not sure, what I'd do--but I'd be inclined to...kick his butt in the marathon.:thumbsup2

ETA: I'm a bit confused--DH signed up for goofy but only will do the half?

Don't have any advice for you but I just wanted to say that is pretty crappy of the friend - unless like Lisa said the friend got injured. Good luck with whatever decision you make as you can see from my signature I am doing the Goofy for the first time this year. I think I might be crazy but I will be there.

No DH's friend didn't say he got injured he just said he would only be running the marathon. He lives less than a mile from us and he sends a text???? If we go DH will be running the Goofy. We just wouldn't have spent the money to go if the friend wasn't going to run it. We love Disney but....

What to do? What to do? I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks what his friend did was crappy (and to do it by text )

TnT-- Good luck in running the Goofy. It is brutal. Make sure you hydrate!!

I'd still go. I've done the half twice and while my next attempt will be the full I wouldn't not do another half because I already did it.

Without knowing why the friend canceled the Goofy I wouldn't chastise him. It might be that he hasn't been able to train enough to do both races and if that is the case he is doing the smart thing and not pushing himself into an injury.

In March I am going with some people to do the National Marathon in DC. Because of a change in work schedule one of the people who was going to do the full has dropped down to the half. It is what I would also do. I would rather do the shorter race and keep running then do the longer and be sidelined with an overuse injury because of it.

Perhaps this person has the same problem. Paying for the Goofy isn't cheap and there is no way I would part with that much money just to drop out for no good reason. Runners also tend to be suborn creatures and usually don't miss goals because we just feel like it.

I hope he still has a great time!

If I had a trip to WDW planned, I'd be going regardless of what any of my friends were doing, especially if I had been putting the time and effort into training for the Goofy.

We have a group going, and I am doing the Half Marathon and I'd have to fall and break my leg to not go at this point. Even then, I'd try to convince to put on a walking cast! ;)

Let's see, you are going to be away without kids......I would tell dh I will be his biggest cheerleader.:cheer2:

He will be running with his friend for half of the race, so it is not like he won't see the guy, right?

ETA... I do understand your frustration. It is stinky when your friends bail on you.

I would be annoyed but I would still go. I had this happen to me a week before my fall marathon, and I can't understand why people do this sort of thing.

Look at it this way....your husband has done all the training. The entry fee is paid for and is non-refundable. Plus, the Goofy medal looks really cool this year.

Well, we have thrown around alot of options today and we still haven't decided what the final outcome will be.

I think DH is leaning towards not running the Goofy and going the next weekend with the kids. When you are there running the races it is not much of a vacation. He said he'd like to take our boys. The following weekend the boys have a 4 day weekend from school. He was only running it because of his friend. While it is ALOT of money to forfeit....we would be spending a lot of money on a trip that really didn't mean much to him.

To those of you who think maybe the friend is injured or hasn't trained enough I can GUARANTEE that is not the case. It is what it is. He is in Colorado skiing until the 4th. Probably too much on his plate.

I told DH it is up to him what HE wants to do. I wasn't the one who trained a good portion of the year. Since we were leaving in less than 2 weeks I guess he'll have to decide soon.
