I am in shock! We are flying on Continental leaving at 1am and getting in at 5pm and all they have us scheduled for is one snack during that entire time! I was not planning on bringing more than entertainment snacks, but guess I will now have to pack at least one entire meal as our layover in Houston is less than 45 minutes as we stay on the same plane. I know the discount airlines do this but Continental? Wow.....

Wow! that seems aweful!

I'd at least pack something like some "power bars" things - you hopefully will have beverage service so you can get some water/soft drinks!

You might want to check the flight schedule again....If I'm looking at the right flight, it looks like you get a snack on the way to Houston....But it looks like the layover is for over an hour.....Call Continental and ask if you can deplane to get a meal.

That was how it was originally booked, but they called to let me know there had been some time changes and one of them was the decrease in the Houston layover. Good in that we get to Orlando sooner, not good in that there is little time for a meal. In thinking this over more, I think we will get off, no matter how long the layover and grab a bite and run around and be thelast ones to get back on the plane. We can leave the carryons at our seats and move fast.

Thanks! I am just SHOCKED that the meal services have been reduced like this!

You might not be allowed to leave your carryons on the plane. Since September 11, they have gotten iffy about that. Also, I wouldn't do it, because others who gte on the plane first would then have an "opportunity".

I would simply pack sandwiches for everyon in your group. Go to a sub shop the night before, and ask them to put the condimentson the side so they do'nt get soggy.

In July last year I flew with Continental from Glasgow to Newark and we were given a hot meal and a snack. The flight was 7 hours. On the return journey we got a hot meal and a breakfast.

Depending on when you are going the ANCIAH flight stops in Seattle at ~ 510am with an hour layover.

When are you going and I can tell you for sure?

The Houston airport has a number of fast food options. It is the typical Subway, Taco Bell, Wendy's, Pizza Hut, and Popeye's.

You could take a soft sided cooler as a carry on. It's never a bad idea to pack food anyway, because you just never know what kinds of delays you'll encounter. Can you even wait until Houston to eat? Isn't the first part of the flight the longer leg?

All of the airlines have cut back. On my last flight my seatmate was lucky because I gave her my pretzels. 2 little packets was almost a meal :)

They are one of the few large airlines that did not cut back on food service. It hasn't changed much at all. It is one of their selling points an hopes to get people to fly on them.

Hmm. Looks like it's a bit of bad luck. You've managed to be on flights that fall outside of the designated meal hours.

I'd phone Continental and ask what you should expect in the "light snack." They should also be able to tell you whether you'll be allowed to deplane in Seattle. I think you have an hour, and if you're lucky, the Starbucks in the B concourse will be open at 5am. If not, you'll have to go out to the 24 hour Starbucks between the B and C concourses.

Don't forget the fruit - it keeps well and is nice and filling. With time zone offset, you'll land at 1pm ADT/AST.

As Pavy said, CO didn't actually reduce meal service. The stars are just in alignment - or not, as the case may be.

Have fun!

I guess that is why the tickets only cost $330 roundtrip....

I wasn't sure what would be open in Seattle at 5am. I don't think the Starbucks was the last time I was through there. I will see. I want to avoid going through Security checks again at all costs as I think it will freak my DD and DS out a bit. So we will play it by ear. I live 45 minutes outside of town, so stopping at a sub shop isn't really feasible. But I think I can pull together a bunch of little snacks and we will see what happens from there.

Thanks again,

Jennifer

Regarding a way to get a safe meal on a plane if there's no sub place open and you don't want to lug a cooler around...

Do they still sell those irradiated meals? I think I remember seeing them at Costco a few years back? You can store them at room temperature for months. I've never tried them (but I have eaten MRE's, which were not bad).

BTW, I don't suggest getting the ones that have the chemical heating element built in. I could be wrong, but I think that's the sort of thing that they don't like on airplanes.
