We got upgraded to a Lagoon View - Club Level room at the Polynesian

I am sorry saying we should get compensation, I was wrong. What I should have said was we think that it would be nice if they were to offer something else, as an appology for thinking we were upgraded. After reading what ducklite has said I get that free upgrades can be taken away, or they could have been a mistake. I also get that we did not originally reserve a Lagoon View room. However what are we suppost to think when we got a new confirmation e-mailed to us and our confirmation on their website has the upgraded room? It's easy to be on the other side and say it might not be true, however I am sure if you found out that you were being upgraded before you left, you're reaction would be different.

My reaction would be hopeful but not confident.

So try to see things from my view with out all the rules and etc when it comes to free upgrades. Anyway if it's not WDW's fault or someone from CRO then who else can I say is responsible for sending us the confirmation and updating the confirmation on their website?

How about not looking at it as anyone's "fault?" How about just seeing it as a nice surprise if it happens, and a small disappointment if it doesn't. If you really really really want a lagoon view that badly, then maybe you (er, your parents) should book one up front. That, my friend, is the only guarantee you'll ever find on this issue.

Did you get that upgrade? I booked through a TA, will I still get the same "option" for an upgrade as the time gets closer?
I will find out for sure on Saturday when we check-in. As for the other question you asked don't bet on WDW e-mailing you a confirmation that lists a better room that you reserved. The only other time we were upgraded was back in May 2000 at the Contemporary from the 12th floor to the 14th floor, which was at check-in. So this is the 1st time we were ever e-mailed a confirmation for a better room view.

OP - Please just relax and enjoy being in the happiest place on earth. So many folks would love to be in your shoes.:goodvibes

CRFan, I agree with the others. Let's hope the pixie dust holds, but you booked and are paying for gardenview so if that's what you get, just enjoy it.

My own cautionary tale is that a few years back when Hawaii was closed for renovation, we booked a gardenview room. We received a letter in the mail informing us that our concierge room would be in Tahiti. When we arrived, we had our gardenview room which we had booked. I don't know if the letter was sent by mistake or if we had been upgraded for a time before someone else actually booked that category. But we had a wonderful time anyway.

But I'm sure we'll all rooting for you.:wizard:

Knowing Disney, it's very likely that the booking systems automatically send out the confirmation if your reservation is modified. That means if the resort is shuffling counts, your rooom category could be changed a few times.

I'm sure the resorts aren't happy with the automated systems, although I bet they make some things easier :rotfl:

here's my 2 cents......if an upgrade is given in writing and is not given at check-in...that's life! On the bigger scale, this "Entitlement" mentality is very sad. Where is the GRATITUDE? We should all be grateful that we have been given the opportunities that have put us where we are today......yes, we all work hard to pay for the Disney trips, but we are able to work and prosper.....there are many that will never have the opportunity to even think about a trip to Disney.....let alone fell slighted and want compensation for something they NEVER paid for to begin with.....

Jason, WDW only OWES your, or rather, your parents, exactly what they paid for. No more and no less. That said, I really hope your upgrade holds, and it most likely will.

Please just try and enjoy your trip this time without getting so worked up about the small things. Try not to worry about the possibility of not getting more than your parents paid for and where other people are parked.

I hope you have a great vacation. The Poly is an amazing resort.

POLY is a very popular resort. Most of the regular rooms are GV. AFAIK half the CL rooms are LV. LV rooms are likely to be sold out.

I agree with the previous posters BUT I'd have a different opinion if the OPs Dad had wait listed for a paid upgrade, was told their reservation was confirmed for the paid LV upgrade but that they were given a GV room at check in.

I think Disney is making a mistake letting guests know, in advance, that they're scheduled for a complimentary upgrade. They're setting some guests up for disappointment.

Well, I can tell you we paid for a concierge room at the Poly and when we got there, no rooms were left. Did we get compensated? No! Did I ask for compensation? No! I did get the amount of difference back. I was just happy to be there. This story reminds me of small town MS and how people think name dropping helps. There are many many people who frequent Disney and who are not on the boards. I can tell you that one is no more important to Disney than the other. A customer should be a customer.

Oh, guys, just leave him alone! Let him enjoy the moment!! If it turns out they don't get the upgrade, then they'll cross that bridge when they get there. Don't be party poopers!! He just wanted to share his good fortune with other WDW fans, but half of the responses are pretty negative ("Congratulations...BUT..."). Sure, you can tell him not to get his hopes up thinking you'll save the family some disappointment later, but isn't the point of Disney to have hopes as high as possible? Come on, Disney fans, be a little more Disney!!

Congrats on the upgrade!!

I just returned from a 5 day stay at the Polynesian and was lucky enough to be upgraded from a standard lagoon view in Hawaii to a castle lagoon view in Tahiti. Most of the rooms in the Hawaii shorthouses are lagoon views if they are facing that side, but they are not necessarily castle views. All the lagoon side rooms in Tahiti have a view of the castle.

I disagree with this post. I think people who have high expectations are setting themselves for disappointment. I think it's better to not expect anything, and be wildly surprised than to have high hopes and be terribly disappointed. I've seen hundreds of posts from people disappointed with Disney because they didn't get anything special for a birthday or anniversary celebration, because they didn't get the room type they wanted, because they didn't get a specific view they had requested. Those peopel would have been far happier if they hadn't expected anything than to think something was going to happen that didn't.

really, the whole argument is kind of silly.

There really aren't any bad views that I'm aware of at the Poly. What you are really talking about is the difference between looking out your window and seeing a whole bunch of trees, or looking out your window and seeing a whole bunch of trees and a bit of lake. ;)

Sure upgrades are nice, but it just isn't an issue that is going to affect anybody's vacation in a discernible manner if it doesn't happen - KWIM?

Of course you were entitled to compensation. Hotels generally upgrade guests if the category of room they reserved isn't available. Hotels that are overbooked will "bump" a guests to a hotel that's equivalent (or better in quality).

Disney has no business overbooking a room category that doesn't have anything to upgrade guests to. Disney should be underbooking more then enough to cover guests that overstay and rooms that need repair.

I know what you're saying, but it isn't our job to bring people back down to earth when they're excited about something. In my mind, I would expect to see congratulatory posts following someone's good news, not downers about how they may not get an upgrade, so stop being/don't get too excited about it.

Actually, that is a downgrade. I hope you were given the price difference back.

Thank you for saying this. The thought about not getting the upgrade never entered my mind when I saw the new e-mail confirmation and our reservation on the WDW website confirming it. So was I suppost to think maybe this is a mistake? Of course not, I thought we were lucky enough to get this great upgrade.

You're very welcome! Fingers crossed that you keep your upgrade!! :goodvibes Even with the party poopers, it's nice to know it's a possibility. Keep your hopes up!

The "party poopers" are just being realistic.

If you read the whole thread, a majority of the "negative" posts did not appear until the OP said he felt his mom and dad should get compensation if the free upgrade did not actually occur.

Yes, I did read the whole thread. There were "downer" posts before and after that comment, which he modified in a later post.

I'm just saying put yourself in his place. If you got good news regarding your Disney trip, you'd probably want to share it with people who appreciate WDW and all its wonders!! I was just sad to see people point out the possible downsides of his family's upgrade. Why rain on his parade? In our crazy, chaotic world, Disney is one of the places we don't have to be realistic. Well, too realistic. Sure, I know I probably won't be able to do everything I want on our trip with a little pirate: and princess: in tow, but that doesn't mean I won't have fun making "dream itineraries." :cloud9:
