We got a new pen pal from England on our trip!

We just got back from a FABULOUS trip. We stayed at the Windsor HIlls Resort which was PERFECT for us. I started thinking that there sure were a lot of people at the parks from England and that it sure would be neat if I could find my 3rd grade dd a pen pal! We were at the resort pool one night and I noticed some girls in the pool my dd's age and their parents had that english accent so I started talking to them and their mom was wanting a pen pal for her dd's too! We both talked about having one growing up and how fun it was. We met them at the pool for several nights getting to know each other. It is amazing how different our lives are and how far away we live from one another, yet we still have so much in common!

I just thought I'd share with y'all! I'm so excited (probably more-so than my dd!) about getting to know this family more! I actually talked to so many people from all over the world while in lines for rides/etc. That was one of my favorite things about the trip!

What a GREAT idea!!!

I did the same thing last year with my 7th grade class-- got them "math pen pals" from a class in England. We eventually tied it into a math project-- comparison prices and currency conversions. But the kids had a blast with it, practiced their letter writing skills (anything that isn't electronic is bound to be a help!) and learned a lot about other cultures.

I did have to translate a bit-- one boy mentioned that his school uniform included a "jumper"-- in the US that's a dress, in the UK it's a sweater. And the whole baseball/cricket thing needed some translation.

But overall it was a HUGE success!!!

DD got her first postcard from her new pen pal today and just about peed in her pants she was so excited! (well, not really, but she was sooooo happy!) It's the little things

How fun! You are lucky to have met someone to write to! That will be a wonderful memory..And who knows, you may end up visiting them in England one day!
