at my job!
I'm working temporarily at an independent Senior living center here in Atlanta. The seniors are 55 and up and most are extremely active and able.
They get a continental breakfast buffet every morning, similar to ones you get at the Holiday Inn or something like that. It consisted of muffins, danishes, a few fruit and cereals. Almost 100% carbs!!
Needless to say I could not partake in it and brought my own breakfast in every day. I heard one of the residents say "now THAT'S a girl who knows what a breakfast is!"
I brought up at a meeting that I've been hearing complaints about the breakfast, which really surprised everyone. "there were never any BEFORE".... I gave them a reading assignment, 45% of our residents are diabetic. Read what their breakfast food does to blood sugar....
Well, after a few MAJOR complaints, the management caved in and started adding lean proteins to the fare. They started offering cheese omelets, turkey bacon and canadian bacon, took away the sweet rolls and added whole grain options. Prunes and strawberries replaced the higher carb fruits and apple danishes!
The day it came thru they all thanked ME! We went from having only about 6 people coming down for breakfast to about 35! It really got the GUYS down, too, who NEVER came down for the sweet stuff!
Tomorrow is my last day there. I am so glad, at least, I left ONE legacy there!
