We don't like Pirates anymore

We rode Pirates last thursday night and were really excited about it. Got on (walk on) started riding and loved it! The new effects and Jack and everything. Then as we got further in where the town was burning...it didn't feel good. In fact, I didn't like it. I thought it was just me but then my mom said, "I don't like this anymore. There's too much fire."

I had forgotten about the fire. A month ago (as some of you may know) our house caught fire in the middle of the night and this brought it all back like a flashback or something.

So sad. I'm hoping with time that that feeling will pass and we can enjoy this great attraction again.

So sorry you had to go through that. I hope everyone was o.k.
I am sure with time you will be able to enjoy pirates again. It may always remind you of that time in your life, but it will not have as hard an effect.
My best wishes are with you. :grouphug:

That is very unfortunate. Sorry to hear you can not enjoy a Dis classic, that is a shame.

They say that time heals everything. I hope your family is doing well after enduring the flashbacks and the original fire. People here on the DIS really do care.
:goodvibes

I'm sorry it wasn't fun for you. I hope as time goes on the horrible memories of your fire will fade and you will feel comfortable again in POTC. :grouphug:

So sorry to hear...hope it gets better with time...and gladly, you're alive...

Hugs to you and yours,

:grouphug:

The "trigger" of fire will lessen over time.... I was in a car accident where a car came from a side street and hit us and I was very skittish about that sort of circumstance for quite some time, but with time and exposure I got over it.

Thanks so much for the reassurance everyone. I guess dealing with insurance, thanking God we are all ok and getting ready for this trip we never really dealt with the fact that we were inside a burning house. I'm hoping time will fade that memory a bit and we can enjoy one of our favourites the way we used to. We're not going on Spaceship Earth any time soon though!

I can relate, we lost our home in a house fire 6 mths after my DS was born, it was a life-changing experience to say the least.

I still remember the smell of it when I ride SE & POTC, also on Kali as well. Time has made it easier to be around that kind of thing, but it still brings back those sad memories and feelings.

Best of luck to you & your family, OP, I know how hard it is and wish you the best! :grouphug:

If it makes you feel any better, the 'fire' on POTC is not real. If you're interested in the special effects that make it, highlight the text below:

start here: The fire is actually red/orange lights projected on fabric that is blowing in a breeze from a fan. It looks like the shimmer of actual flames but it's not!

Sorry you had that bad experience. Hope it will lessen over time. :grouphug:

Thanks, we knew it wasn't real but maybe knowing what the effect is will make it less uncomfortable next time.

OMG how terrifying. I can't imagine how it would have been having an infant to get out. As it is I had a cat and 3 persons over 80. You're right, the smell stays with you.

The house across the street from ours burned to the ground when I was probably 11 or 12. The family lost everything (including, sadly, their pets). They sat in our living room and watched the whole thing. Because of the closeness, knowing them, being friends with one of the kids, I attached to that experience even though I wasn't really affected. Now, more than twenty years later, that distinctive smell still triggers a rush of emotional reactions in me. I can handle POTC because there is no smell; I can handle Kali because it's a different fire smell. Houses burning down have their own 'sting'.

So, I expect that you might have issues for a long time because you were so intimately involved. Speaking with a trauma counselor might help, as would talking it out and re-affirming your positives (you lived, everyone's okay etc).

Traumatic events like that always leave emotional scars.

The first car accident I ever had (way back in 1988), I was t-boned pretty bad on the drivers side but luckily walked away with no more than a headache and sore knee and shoulder. When the accident happened, my tape player was blaring "Come on feel the noise". To this day, I CANNOT listen to that song in the car. I have trouble listening to it in the safety of my own home.

I can't imagine having to get out of a burning house, to clarify, our house burned while I was out with my DS & my DH was at work. One firefighter was slightly injured when he attempted to open a door and the force blew him across my driveway, my neighbor's lawn and into the siding on her home. He recovered just fine, but the imprint of his body was in their siding for a period of time and it something that is indelibly marked on my brain.

While there is no fire smell in POTC, it is like I can almost smell it since it looks like fire. On SE & Kali, while the smell is different, it is still hard to push out the thoughts. Unfortunately the same thing happens around a campfire, but it is just something we deal with.

And although we had really good insurance, I couldn't fathom the amount of paperwork we had to do afterwards. Then I thought, well at least I am 27 and healthy & can figure it out, I can't imagine someone older or someone less organzied having to do the paperwork, keep track of things purchased and submit receipts for everything to get the replacement cost difference--it was a nightmare all over again!

I wish you the best, it is a terrible, terrible thing to have to deal with. :grouphug:

I'm sorry to hear about your home. Hope everyone is okay. A month isn't that long ago. Give it some time.
