We did it.....

No there is no VPN client, you can not use them to access servers or upload.
Let me repeat there is no ipad VPN client :)
(This PSA brought to you by the Werner Technologies IT Department proud users of Linux and Windows since 1999)

Who needs VPN when you have SSH!

Not unless you vpn through the firewall first :)

No outward facing SSH? Doh! :) I guess the only thing left is reverse ssh tunnel from the inside out.

I tend to be anti port...any port... well maybe 80 on a good day

 :sad2:  :sad2: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Congrats on the iPads. :thumbsup2 I'm jealous. ::yes::::yes::::yes::

I joined the iPad collective as well. I have enjoyed playing with it, but I am waiting to take this baby on the road and see how well it works with my online classes.

Welcome to the club. I have the 3G and my husband has the wi-fi. Typing from now while I'm working ;)

I am writing this on my partner's iPad. It is the 3G one. He is paying for the monthly data plan. It does not work where we are now in Canada just
thirty miles past the Maine border. I am on the B&b's wireless network.

The gadget has a certain coolnes factor, for sure. Light and easy for travel. But it is not a computer (it never said it was, of course). And I am not used to this kind of keyboard.

He likes it a lot. I am still not so sure.

Congrats Kevin & John on your new toys!! I really haven't looked at them much yet, but I know my time is coming. I was the same way with my first IPhone. It took me a little while, but then I was hooked!

I convinced my boss to buy me one for "work" I hope to have it in the next couple of weeks. Between that and my new phone I might become a hermit!

I notice that if you quote and reply to a long post, there's no way to scroll inside the text window. At any rate, I've loved my iPad since the day it arrived.

I don't drink Kool Aid, which I'm sure is the only reason I've been able to resist the i-phone and now the iPad.

They do look facinating, I'm looking forward to your reviews as you use the iPad more.

I have some really early observations as far as the iPda being used as an e=reader.

The Kindle app works just like it does on the iPhone. As long as your Kindle whispernet is on....it will sync to the furthest location read.

The Kindle app has three back grounds....white background with black text, black background with white text and sepia background with black text.

You can also adjust the brightness of the Kindle app.

I downloaded iBooks and bought a book that hasnt been available on Kindle, but havent really had a chance to play with that yet.

So far, I like the larger "page" on the iPad. The back lighting is nice for reading in bed (no need for a book light). The iPad is heavier than the Kindle. I didnt think this was going to be that noticeable....but it is.

Pretty much none of of the books I read are in color....so I dont really have anything to compare it to.

I did download the new issue of Vanity Fair (which I subscribe to anyway). It's $4.99 per issue and it's very crisp.....but there is something easy and natural about flipping through a magazine. It's a very different experience trying to look through and electronic magazine. This is one thing that I think is better in it's original format.

I'll keep you posted as to what my experiences are.

Congrats, to you and John on your I-Pads!

Can you tell me what else can be done on an I-Pad? I have a Kindle (LUUUUUUV IT!!) and it's cool that I could use an app for it, but can I also watch movies downloaded from Netflix on it? Or view Facebook on it? Forgive me if I sound ignorant, but I'm just asking...just curious! :thumbsup2

Contracts on joining the iPad club.
If you view a lot of stuff in pdf format, check out goodreader. It is one of my favorite apps.
The ny times editors choice app is pretty cool as well.

John and I are proud owners of 32G 3G iPads.

We've only had them for less than a day.

So far, they're pretty cool.

The koolaid is tasty!:thumbsup2

Couple of questions Kevin.

I am hearing that the reception is much better then that of an Iphone. We are interested in this as our office cell reception is spotty ( step outside the office and full strength).

Did you guys order these are were able to find them locally at a Apple store?

We have the wifi version and love it ( the wife has stolen it from me and I can't get it back).

Thanks

Nice! I look forward to hearing your impressions as you get more familiar with the machine.

I'm so very tempted by this particular brand of Koolaid... I figure I'm going to cave eventually. =)

We have the 3G model....but havent really taken them out of the house yet. As we have wifi in the house, it's all I've used so far. I can tell you that with wifi...they are blazing fast. There seems to be no lag time at all.

The way we came to own iPads is a bit of a story.

Pete has one and he let me play with it for a bit and I was amazed at how simple they are to operate. I got the idea that my Mom might find some enjoyment in having an iPad. She has vision issue and I thought this might help.

I badgered her to go to the Apple store as I was going to buy her one for Mother's day. She's a bigger procrastinator than me....so it took a while. I finally got her to Apple and she thought that this looked like a good idea. Lo and behold.....Apple has been out of iPads for a few weeks. The only way to secure an iPad through Apple is to put your name on a waitlist and as they are delivered....you would be sent an email to come get yours. I asked how long it would take and I got the "Genius Bar" shoulder shrug. We put our name on the list and left.

Later that evening, I got a call from Mom that we should look further for an iPad. I called all of the Best Buys and Apple stores around and no one had any for sale.....so I ordered one from Apple.

I then did the dumbest thing ever. Apparently, the last thing I ordered on line from Apple was iPod Touch for one of our listeners who won one through the prize matron. Without even looking, I ordered the iPad and went on my way.

Jump ahead two weeks and I get a shipment notification that my iPad is in the mail ....BUT BEING SENT TO THE WRONG ADDRESS!!!!!
. I freaked out at 1:00am. I called the listener the next morning (who happens to be a great friend) and explained my situation. After she finished laughing, she promised to send my iPad back to us.

While waiting for the one to come from Apple, I got a notification that my name had come up on the waitlist. John decided that as long as a second iPad was available, he'd get one as well.

We now have two iPads and my Mother is not interested at all.

Even though the iPad is simple to use....it's simple for someone that has some computer knowledge. It's not simple for someone that has never used a computer and has no knowledge of even the basics.

That being said.....I'm still trying. We've had computer / iPad lessons for two days. As for being good for people with sight issues...there are a lot of sites and things that can be made bigger. The issues are with things like System Preferences. They are not able to be super sized and pose a problem.

We're still learning...and teaching...and we'll see where we go from there.

Kevin what do you find yourself using the iPad for the most so far?

Kevin what do you find yourself using the iPad for the most so far?

We've had one since Thursday evening and one since Friday afternoon.

I havent really "used" it for anything yet. I've set it up and played around with some of the different features...but havent spent any "in depth" time with it.

I can tell you that I like the Kindle app for reading in the dark. It's nice to not have huge book lite looming over what I'm reading. Along those lines...the iPad is heavier than the Kindle. I find myself readjusting the way I hold it while I read. While the weight is not huge....the difference between the ipad and the Kindle is very noticeable.
