OK -- if you add up your Sci-Fi bill, you left a $.26 tip!!!

How exactly do you come up with that? According to my math her tip was just fine.

To the OP - If money is exceptionally tight, I think you did better your way than if you purchased the DDP. However, if you could have swung the extra $161 over the course of the week you could have had a MUCH better dining experience. I'm by no means flaming you for eating burgers and chicken fingers all week from a health standpoint, but you could have been eating wonderful sit-down meals or character meals every day, complete with appetizers and desserts. You would have had a LOT more food overall and the food would have been much better quality than just burgers and fries all week.

I'm enjoying reading this but wanted to mention for an extra $25 per day you could do the dining plan.

I actually tried planning for this, before we booked but with our food choices, it would be a waste. We never eat dessert with our meals and I usually eat kid's meals or whatever someone doesn't eat. While we were eating, I was trying to imagine 4 appetizers, meals, drinks and desserts and was glad we didn't add it.

You only left a $4 tip at Planet Hollywood?!? Ouch! That's less than 10% of your bill. I would have left at least $8 -- waitstaff work hard and deserve 20% IMHO.

I was going to ask the same thing unless the service was terrible. I've been waitressing for 14 years and the going rate is 15% for good service and 20% for excellent service. But some people really don't realize that or take our service into consideration.

Now, when I wrote our meals last year, I got a lot of flaming feedback about our food choices

Why did you get flamed? Because they were "unhealthy?" or because they were "bad" restaurants?

Main St. Bakery-The greatest desserts, you can't come to WDW without going there!

HAHA I have never been there! ;)

I think its a good idea you are posting your costs. I never thought of doing it before. Maybe I'll go over my receipts from my last trip and figure out how much I spent. Course I didn't save as much money as you, I bought a meal for myself and only myself each meal. But I do remember when I would go with my whole family (7 of us total) we would always get like one combo and share it between two of us or something like that.

REVIEWS:
POP-cereal and milk w/banana was so good, my favorite breakfast! But that croissanwich looks so good, must try one.

COLUMBIA-Another one of our favorites. The fish is such a nice change and you must eat upstairs, nice and quiet and cool upstairs.

MAIN ST. BAKERY-I'm still thinking about that coffee cake, it was so good! And even though we bought it at park closing it was so moist like it just came out of the oven. It was so huge, I saved half for breakfast the next day. It had a layer of pudding or cream under the crumb topping.

I got a little of both, no green veggies and all and plenty of grease.

HAHA I have never been there! ;)

You must go, but a warning: No celery and peanut butter here. Just plenty of real butter in the dough.
SHOCKING! You'd expect more from a mouse! :rotfl2:

Thanks for posting. You did much better than us. I think our's was about $1500-1600 for 16 days last year for a family of 4. We stayed at POP too and we loved it!! This year we are going for 17 days and I can't wait.

Interesting thread, but I noticed a couple of things that are important to point out as I'm sure many people who are reading this thread are grappling with whether to do the DP or DDE, and so they may use this thread to help in that important decision:

1) Lots of sharing of meals, but most people can't get away with that.

2) Tips do seem low. Although tipping is personal, when factoring in savings for DDP or DDE, tips need to be included as it reflects the total cost of eating. Again, just like with sharing meals, low tipping will save money. (It's already included in DP).

3) Didn't mention ages of children, until I saw DD1 - 1 year old babies don't each much (my daughter breastfed until 14 months, so at 1yr. old, she didn't eat much at all). Another cost saving measure.

4) Food choices are all quick service or fast food - cheapest dining choices on property. For breakfast in room, did you add the cost of those foods to your budget as well?

Based on the OPs budget and family needs, she is happy with their dining experiences, but in all honestly, the above mentioned factors will save money for all families, especially when sharing meals. Since many families are struggling with whether to do the DP or purchasing DDE, I think it's important that people look at the ways that the OP saved money. Sure, she proved that a family of 4 can eat for approx. $75.00 per day, but it's with an infant, sharing meals, eating fast food, and tipping low. Not judging the OP's choices to do this, but I know that this system wouldn't work for many people and so if people are reading this thread it might give them false hope that they don't need to do the DP, when in fact there are a lot of uncommon variables in the OP's situation that can't be applied across the board for many families.

For us, we only eat table service restaurants as we eat well at home and do so on vacation - no fast food for us! For my hubby, DD3 and myself, the DP is costing us $87.00 per day. We will be eating: prime rib, chicken, soup, fish, pasta, salads, appetizers, wraps, soups, fruit cups, toast, etc. OP would have spent the exact same amount as us as infant is free - so for an extra $11.00 per day you wouldn't have had to share meals, skip meals, etc.

Just thought it was important for me to mention this as every other post is whether or not people should get the DP, and this post proves that it is definitely worth it for most families and would have been well worth it for the OP, and in fact, would have been a cheaper option as she still ate breakfast in room sometimes, and shared every meal.

One summer a friend and I took our daughters to the beach. One night we (the moms) said let's go have ice cream for dinner-you should've seen the look on their faces! They were so thrilled. They still remember this -(and they're 24 years old now!) "we thought our mothers had lost their minds" they said to us one time. I think you're making memories for your kids they'll talk about years later. One week off the good nutrition wagon isn't going to hurt them! :)

50's Primetime-Service was great as usual, Cousin Craig wasn't over the top, like some others we saw. I shared with DH and DS2, I got a piece of chicken, pot roast, taters and mac. Everything was excellent. I planned on dessert, but was too full. This meal we actually stuffed ourselves, cause it was sooo good! I tasted DS2's shake and was so jealous, it was the best shake I ever tasted and it's enough for 2, but do you think he shared with me?

Minnie frozen strawberry bars were so good while waiting in the heat for the afternoon parade. I wish I had had more. They're full of strawberries, kind of like a Dole juice bar. Yummy!

If I ever want unsolicited advice, I usually go to MIL...but it looks like you can get it here, too. :rolleyes1

HILARIOUS!!!! However, I don't have a MIL (she was awesome) SIL seems to take over that bad MIL bit.

Hey NvrbntoWDW we are a family of 5 (kids were 6, 9, and 2 3/4) that ate for about $75/day last summer. So I know it can be done. Your food choices look alot like ours. I don't have big eaters and we shared ALOT of meals. WDW gives way too much food for us. And on our sit-down days we didn't need another big meal on the same day. We also ate breakfast in the room bc we are just cereal people. :thumbsup2

I love your post!!!! Based on our eating habits we could NEVER come out ahead with the Dining Plan. :confused3

Actually the ages of the children are 12 and 10. I used a 1 and 2 for the order, like first son and second son.

Oh, then that changes things in regards to the DP pricing. None of you must be big eaters then because that's not a lot of food for two growing chidren and two adults. It obviously worked for you, but I suspect it wouldn't work for many families at all.

Something else I noticed as I was analyzing your daily reviews is that you ate a lot of snacks, desserts, pops and milkshakes, etc. which adds to the budget quite a bit. I suspect this may be because people were not full from sharing meals. This again, is something that people need to think about when deciding whether to do or not do the DP.

hi!!

thanks for showing us your budget!! I can understand not wanting to purchase the DDP for a 10 and 12 yo kid...but seeing as though you put so much work into trying to "Save" I think the DDP would have worked out great.

We are not big eaters either and often split meals. It seems to me like you guys had fun at the sit downs and so do we. I consider them my break from park touring, so much so that FREE DINING is the way to go!! Have you thought about that?? :teeth: Anyway my point is that once I started a budget without the plan, I noticed how much easier it was with the plan...often we could stretch credits for bkfst and snacks and bring food back to our room for later.

Either way, thanks for sharing your reviews with us!!

one income is hard to do in WDW thats for sure and we all do our best!!

glad you had fun!!

I am going to try the bakery in August!!

thanks again

I think that what works for one family might not work for another...congrats for them to make it on that much. Personally we couldn't do it on that little because I like to have one character meal a day for our kids, but that is just me...and since we don't stay on property we aren't eligible. Also, their trip is over, so no reason to keep flaming her about how she should have done their trip!

Thanks for sharing...

Thanks so much for the info. Our family of 5 have been to WDW 3 times now and always have to watch our budget. We come from the west coast of Canada and with the expensive flights and the Cdn $$ (not so much now, but in the past) we try to budget somewhat for our food. Luckily DH is not a big eater but we did try to eat healthy most of the time and still keep within our budget. On our first trip of 13 days, I had budgeted for more money than we actually spent so I came home and bought a new couch for our family room!
This trip we are on the dining plan as it is free and we are taking our daughters boyfriend who is a picky eater, but a big guy - 6' 4" - so I am glad that we have the plan. However, we are staying for 12 nights so the last two days are off the plan. We will eat like kings the first 10 days and like paupers the last two. LOL :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Sometimes you are only able to leave what you can. If i dont have lots of money and can only leave like 4-5 dollars i think thats better than leaving noting at all.
