We chose the dark side - Carnival VS Disney

We do not have kids... (So far, nothing I read let me think I would not enjoy a NCL cruise... ) But it's not the first time I read about NCL not being suited for families with young children.

Amen to both of you!!

I used to work at the Disney Store in Times Square, and it would always make me so sad to witness parents scolding their male child(red) for being in the castle area and looking at Princess things but then say nothing or even encourage the sister(s) being in the Cars/Marvel area.

On the flip side, I did have the distinct pleasure of ringing up a mother who was buying the complete Princess Tiana costume set for her son - who was soooooo excited he didn't want to take it off for us to remove the security tag. (He finally did.) As someone who is gay and who has several trans friends, I rang her up with tears in my eyes and said "I want to hug you for supporting him like you are!!" And after they had left I had to excuse myself to go in the back and cry for a moment. I'm very lucky in that my family accepts me for who I am and has never had issues with me. Many of my friends aren't as lucky.

PLEASE NOTE: I am in no way, shape, or form saying that clothes "turn" someone anything or that just because a boy likes princess things he's gay. I'm just saying there IS a double standard when it comes to boys with "girl" things vs. girls with "boy" things. And applauding parents who let their kids be themselves!!

I love that post.

Well parent's have the right to raise their kids with whatever values they wish to instill in them. It's one reason why we homeschool. It's all a matter of opinion. That's all I'll say about that.

I'm really getting excited about our upcoming cruise. We leave in three weeks.

I don't know I've always felt like being in contact/getting to know different cultures and different lifestyles (I try to be open minded) it helps me appreciate/respect them more, most of the time.

But we digress, we digress...

Let's go back to the program.

Three weeks and a half before our Carnival cruise. Can't wait.

I'll put the link of my other thread here when I start my official review of the Carnival Victory. :)

I know that feeling! Its 6 weeks till our first RCCL cruise and I'm so excited. Just for measure, as excited as I get when I'm going to cruise DCL, I think I'm twice as excited now. Maybe because its something new. DCL is so familiar and the Oasis I will have to explore from top to bottom. Not sure but am really anticipating this. I may regret it later but for now I'm SO EXCITED!

Can't wait to read your Carnival review.

Please write a review. I've been looking at RCCL cruises a lot. There's a part of me(nostalgia) that want's to go back on DCL next year, but the other part of me wants to try something new. It's probably going to come down to how much my kids like Carnival. Their the ones that will give me the push. It was hard giving up WDW after 9 trips. At first I really missed it( we had some great times when they were little), but it was my kids who said they rather go on cruises. If I gave them the choice between Universal and WDW they always chose Universal. Once in a while I ask them if they want to go WDW...nope they'd rather go to Iceland, Asia or some other crazy place. I think as parent it's harder to give things up because of the memories, but kids at least mine are excited to try new things.

Can't wait to hear your Oasis review. We are booked on the Harmony for Spring Break in March. My girls (teens) are so excited about how much the ship has to offer. I'm a bit nervous because it's SO big.

Looking forward to hearing what you think about the Vista and the itinerary. I'm sorry they dropped Turkey because Ephesus was one of the highlights but I certainly understand why it was dropped.

Yeah my son was really bummed about this. There's something kind of cool about saying you've been to Turkey kind of like saying you've been to Iceland. I understand why they dropped it. Although I don't think it's anymore at risk for a terrorist attack then any other place. I'd probably be more hesitant to go to Germany right now than Turkey.

Not gonna lie, I've seen pictures and videos of the Oasis and I am a bit jealous. ;)

The problem with Turkey is more about the political climate (very unstable) than the terror attacks right now. It is listed among the most dangerous places in the world where people should avoid travelling (like Afghanistan, Irak and Syria).

That being said, years ago, it wasn't a safe place for tourists to begin with.

Thank you!

I'm also looking forward to all of these reports. We'll never be DCL-platinum, partially b/c of the cost, but also because my kids would rather go on a different ship (or to a different resort) for every family trip.

I assume you Carnival folks will be posting the threads on the DCL forum? There really is no other option, it seems.

And the RCL folks will be posting on the Royal forum, even if it's a DCL vs sort of report? I guess that one could go either way, really, if it's a "vs" sort of thing.

I'll be posting a review of the Carnival Vista at the end of October. Not on this thread I'll start a new one so just look for it. I think it good for people to post for reviews of other cruiselines I wish more people would. A lot of people are getting priced out of DCL or just want to try something new so the reviews help.

Agree. But regardless of values, as a society, it's been generally accepted that it's not ok to denigrate or assault people who have different values. Based on the information given it sounds like that's close to what happened to pp's son.

I don't know if you've read this or not but here is my comparison of DCL to the Vista from our sailing in June.

I did, thank you! :) I think I've read all the comparisons that have been posted in the last few months. We are not quite ready for sailing in Europe yet (DS is 7, would definitely get too tired/whiny with the long tours), but the ship itself sounded awesome! I'm also hoping some others chime in about the kid stuff. I feel like I'm maintaining a mental list of "near future" vs "a number of years from now", and Vista seemed to potentially be in the latter category until I read more. It got oddly bad reviews on cruisecritic when I looked there a month or so ago. Not that I trust cruisecritic so much; I refuse to officially join b/c every time I've searched for a specific topic, I end up on a thread where the responses are rude or sarcastic or just plain mean.

I dont think this is a appropriate topic here. I think we have moved on.
