Post your most memorable snow memories.

1967: Similar to the event that happened earlier this week. I was working in Boston. It had started to snow in the early afternoon and when it hit the ground, it turned to ice. They let us out of work around 3:30 p.m. I got home at 11 p.m. Normally the drive was 45 minutes. Some of my co-workers slept at work on their desks.

February, 1969 (I think): We had not one, not two but three major snow storms in a 5 day span. During one of the storms we got snowed in and my father had to go out the cellar window because our doors were blocked.

1978: The great blizzard of '78. We had over 20 inches of snow on the ground when it hit (I was living in Plymouth, MA at the time). Nobody left their house for a week.

1997: The April Fools Day Blizzard. The joke was on us. Nearly 30 inches of snow in 24 hours. What a mess! This was another time we had trouble getting out the front door.

I remember the last three you posted and it just reminds me how much I hate the snow. Love the pictures of your cats.

in Maine was the worst. Instead of snow, we got inches and inches of ice for days. All of the state lost power, some for a day, some for a few days, some for weeks. Some of the islands were without power until spring when the power company could get out there to fix things. It was definitely a historical storm. We live in the woods and it was really creepy. No power and at the time no generator. We all laid in bed listening to the trees groaning, breaking, and smashing like glass in the yard. The kids had no school but couldn't go out to play because of the danger of falling ice. Businesses were closed for days.

I really only remember a few...

Blizzard of 96- We had soo much snow it was so hard to walk.. and i was 8 so i had a blast!

Dec 5, 02- I remember the exact date cuz its my sis's bday.. and guess what? IT'S SNOWING AGAIN, SAME DATE!

Feb 03- Whole week off of school cuz of the snow... pushed my school's play back two weeks, since we were supposed to open that friday, but school was cancelled!

Looking forward to more snow this year!

I've seen snow twice in my whole life and I've only ever seen it snow once.
In December 1998 I went up to Michigan with my family. It only snowed a couple of inches but it was beautiful. Granted I didn't have to shovel it or drive in it but I loved it. I made a salami snowman with my dad, went sledding and made snow angels with my brother. And the house we were staying in had a big picture window that looked out onto the lake. We'd sit in front of the window and watch it snow. And when the lake froze over we'd laugh at these 2 swans having the hardest time on the slippery ice.
I'd probably feel different if I had to live in it but when you don't it's a little more thrilling I guess.

Seeing as though I'm right next to Toms River, our memories are pretty much the same.

But I know that after the big storm last year my college decided to open but never shoveled! That was a real treat, let me tell you, to walk through all that snow and then sit through 4 hours of classes.

I remember the snowstorm of '67 here in Michigan. Also, we had a terrible Ice storm in March of '72. Lost a lot of beautiful trees in our oak laden town.:(

last year was the ice storm,it called off classes(college) but the kicker was I was coming in since they had only been delayed.Guess what, called off when I got into town.I did get to work instead and made some money

I couldn't tell you the year, but one year when we were driving from home in NJ to my grandparents' in PA, with chains on the tires, our car got stuck! It must have been Route 80. I remember seeing an "Esso" sign on one side of the highway. And I remember a guy in a Volkswagen Beetle stopping and taking us to a gas station. That was a sight because there were 5 of us in my family! Dad sat in the front with the man driving, my mom and sisters sat in the back, and I laid down across their laps. LOL! And about 6 months ago I told my older sister about this because I wanted verification that I remembered it correctly. I was really young. She said...yes, that's the way it happened! Must have really made an impression on me!!! :)

Blizzard of 77 in Buffalo - didn't make it home for a few days and city closed for a week! Blizzard of 85, 93, 95, 99, 00 and in 2001 for Christmas it snowed for a week. I never saw so much at one time. I am told Buffalo isn't the snowiest city - it is Syracuse. Also the big northeastern out there tonight missed us. Cold but sunny and dry!

#1: January 1967. SE Suburban area of Chicago. We got 24 inches of snow in about 8 hours. They let us out of school early when the roads started getting bad. We just had completed the construction of our new domed gym at our high school - less than one year old. The snow was pretty heavy and wet and caused the roof to collapse. Luckily there were only a few kids left at the school by that time and no one was hurt. I spent about 12 hours in a school bus stuck in a drift until the snow plow got us out and towed us back to town. We were out of school for three days. The drifts were so high we could walk up the drifts to the roof tops. Way cool.

#2: Spring 1970. Same place. I was trying to get home from college (Peoria IL) on the train-bus combination. Got to the bus station way late. My mom and aunt were there to pick me up (we lived about 30 miles from the bus station). The bus station closed up before the bus got there, so mom and aunt waited in the car. Most bus stations aren't located in the best part of town, just like this one. Finally arrived about midnight, we got in the car. Mom took Dad's company car because it had better tires (Dad was in California helping his mom). Snow started getting bad on the way home. Finally got within a few miles of home, when we got stuck. Had to leave the car on the side of the interstate ramp and walked from the car to our house (about 1.5 miles). We tried pushing the car out, but aunt slipped and fell under the car. Had to get Mom to stop for fear she would get it moving and drive over Aunt. Wild night.

Wow! I love them! I'm so jealous too..............

I so want to experience a real snow storm & also to experience a White Christmas.

I soooooo love looking at pics of snow, it's just so beautiful, so white so perfect.:hyper: :goodvibes :magnify:

Can't ya tell I'm a poor deprived Aussie;)

Nutsy, you are just going to have to come to the US and visit all of us sometime.

I'm sure that here in the Northeast we could rustle up some snow for you sometime in the Dec to March range.

How does that sound?

I definetly remember 1997. I was home from college visiting folks and was worried I would get snowed in. Ice Storm of 2001 was horrendus. I hated everything about it. I like snow though but Ice don't work for me.

Blizzard of 78. I jumped off my front steps and was waist deep.
O.K. I was only 10 but when your 10 your excited about such things.

I think the last time it snowed down here was in '78, before I lived here. Lived in WI it's always snowing way up there.

Blizzard of 78, or was it 77...???

Anyways I think we were off school about a month after it hit..
We had to go to school on saturdays....:earseek:
People drove their cars across the Ohio River cause it was froze...:earseek:

1997
We got the most snow in a 24 hour period(for this area)..I think it was a total of 18"...Pretty minor compared to what some people north of us get....Good thing it happened on the weekend..

I remember '78 for three major storms...the Ice Storm on 1/13/78 (we were joking about Friday the 13th in school), which ended up dumping about a foot of snow/ice on Long Island. We ended up camping out at my sister's boyfriend's house due to a 3 day power outage.
Then a couple of weeks later, we got another 22 inches. Then a week after that we got 21 inches. I remember going to my first concert with these huge mountains of snow in the Coliseum parking lot.

Then I moved south and rather than get ice/snow, it was SNOW! The first few years I was here, it wasn't too bad. In '92, we got lots and lots of snow, three blizzards total, the last on April Fools Day. Fortunately, I'd had major surgery on my wrist and didn't have to drive my Miata for most of that winter.

Winter of '96 was bad. I was pregnant with my older son, and lived on top of a mountain....I think I shoveled about 20 feet of snow total that winter. The worst was spending an hour or two finally getting a path for the car to get out and then the highway crew plowing it all back in.

The next few years we had some bad ones, but nothing until '03. I was in Florida when the big one hit...made for an interesting drive home. Had to leave the car in the street in the middle of the night while we shoveled a space in front of the house for it. This was after we had to shovel a path up to the front door, because my little guy wouldn't be able to walk through 30" of snow!

Florida, here I come...

In Daytona Beach last year a week before Christmas, it snowed.

No, seriously, it did.

Of course, it was SO COLD out, and it was these weird little light flakes...it dusted all of the cars. They actually let some of the schools go home early because this was such a rare thing. My sister called me from school all excited about how she was going to make a snowman. I called our Orlando stores and bragged that it was snowing.

Then, of course, it stopped. :) Drats!
