We Came, We Saw, We Ate...But Mostly We Ate! A January DxDDP Review! U/D Via Napoli!

Last time we were at Sassagoula Floatworks, we didn't get the chance to enjoy any beignets. We were determined to try some this time around, so we took a break from the parks, headed over to Port Orleans, and got one order of beignets for one snack credit.

Behold the doughy, sweet, fried goodness. I think a small corner is missing because one of us (not pointing fingers here) took a tiny bite before the picture was taken. These were really good. Maybe not quite as good as the ones I had in New Orleans once, but still really good. Totally worth the snack credit.

If you read my December review, you will see that DH was absolutely enchanted with the sweet potato pillow that is part of Rose & Crown's chicken dinner. Since I got to repeat my happiness with Le Cellier, it was only fair that he got to repeat his nirvana at Rose & Crown.

We arrived close to our ADR time of 7:45pm, and only had to wait a few minutes before our buzzer went off. It was a chilly night, but not nearly as cold as it had been on our previous trip, so we didn't care if we sat inside or out. We were seated inside again, but this time on the opposite side of the restaurant. We were in the last room in the corner, and it was actually a bit of a squeeze (both for us and our waitress) to get to our table. Once the place started to clear out later on, though, that was less of an issue.

Once again, we made fast friends with our server. Kim was friendly and helpful, and we really enjoyed chatting with her. This time, I decided to just order hot tea to begin with, and had standard English Breakfast tea throughout the meal. Unlike the signature restaurants, R&C just has a few types of Twinings tea. This could be due to the theme of the restaurant, too. The tea was still really good (I think I had 3 pots!), but I did miss the vanilla roobios.
DH ordered iced tea. Kim also brought out some cheese rolls with butter:

These really look better than they tasted. They were cold, and not terribly flavorful. We didn't eat much of them anyway, since we knew we had a lot of food coming.

For his appetizer, DH wanted to try something uniquely English, so he went with the Scotch egg:

This is a hard-boiled egg wrapped in sausage meat and fried, then served with a little mustard sauce and toast. It was definitely unique, and he ate the whole thing (I got a taste), but it was very rich. We could see how some people might be turned off by all of that fat and meat together. Not sure if it's something either of us would get again.

Guess what my appetizer was? That's right, another cheese plate!

What was nice was that this plate had a trio of new cheese for me...all from the U.K. There was a mushroom brie, Irish cheddar, and stilton. Being a cheddar lover, that was my favorite. Likewise, not being a fan of brie, that was my least favorite. Stilton is a lot like blue cheese, so it is very strong, but good when paired with the fruit. As you can see, there was a lot of cheese on this plate. I tried to finish it all, but only made it through about half.

Since I had also tasted the infamous chicken and sweet potato pillow on our last trip, and also loved it, DH and I both ordered the same thing for our main course:

Personally, I think it was a little less delicious than it was in December, and I think it was the chicken. In December, I remember the chicken being perfectly cooked and very juicy. This time, it was still good, but not quite as tender and juicy. DH had no complaint, and finished his whole plate. I was so full by that point in the trip (both from the day's food, and the whole week's), that I made it through a little more than half. Oh, and there's still nothing wrong with that sweet potato pillow...that is just awesome.

Of course, there was still dessert to be had. We tried to order items that weren't too large, but that's a matter of perspective. DH liked my chocolate scotch cake in December, so he ordered that:

Still pretty good, but not the best cake either of us had ever had. I guess it's just too much like a regular cake, with not enough moistness or unique flavor.

I wanted to try the sticky toffee pudding, even though I don't like butter sauces:

As you can see, I got the sauce on the side again. The rest of the dessert is really a cake sitting on some pudding. Both were fine, but I wasn't terribly impressed. A lot of people rave about this dessert, but maybe they are bigger fans of toffee than I am

By the time we were done with our meal and paid the check, it was well after Illuminations, and most people had left the restaurant. Our check is timestamped 9:38pm, but we were definitely the last ones to leave.

Total OOP cost before tip? $76.02

Atmosphere? I liked sitting closer to the pub in December, rather than our room this time. I can definitely see why people are happy with viewing Illuminations from the patio here, but since we weren't interested in that, and only concentrating on the inside atmosphere, this is a 3.

Service? Kim was very nice. Our only complaint was that there seemed to be longer stretches later in the evening where she was absent. This is a 3.5.

Food? DH still maintains this is a 5, but I think he's blinded by the sweet potato pillow. Other than the pillow, which was perfect, this meal was more of a 3.5 for me.

Overall rating? We'll be back...DH is an addict

Ooooooh beignets!!! I must say, when I switched our resort from POR to YC, that was one of the things we did miss getting to try! (We considered making a trip over there, but it never actually happened :sad2:)

R&C looks yummy! I was shocked DBF didn't order that cheese plate when we went, it sounded right up his alley! Looks great! I do agree, the chocolate scotch cake was a bit ordinary. Not bad, but just tasted like chocolate cake to me as well.

I stayed at POFQ during our last trip and my daughter used all of her snack credits on beignets, she was addicted! Ok, I loved them too but not enough to eat them THAT much! I have come to the conclusion that I would be very happy dining with you because I would drink/eat all of the sauces that you don't care for!:drinking1 :rotfl:

Great reviews!

Getting to POR isn't too bad...in fact, we did it on both of our trips. We would just catch a bus from one of the resorts. Alternatively, you can just get there from DTD, if you're already hanging out down there. The boat ride between POR and DTD is very pleasant. You've gotta make it to the beignets next time!

I love that DH eats a lot of things I don't like, and vice versa, but he didn't really enjoy many of the sauces, so you would definitely be a good dining partner for a lot of these meals :thumbsup2

Well, we've come to our last morning (finally!). This review has taken longer than it should have, but it was nice to slowly repeat our dining journey.

Even though we had a lunch ADR at Via Napoli, DH and I decided to burn a couple more snack credits at the oft-hyped Karamell-Kuche in Germany. We'd passed by a few times before, but there was always a long line, so we never made it inside.

This time, there was no line (granted, it was 11:21am). DH chose this amazing chocolate cupcake with frosting and a caramel drizzle:

The frosting got a little damaged by the container, but you can still see that they put a ton of frosting on there.

I decided on a chocolate-covered marshmallow with caramel:

As you can see, I took a bit before we could get the picture...hey, I couldn't help myself! Our lunch ADR was at 11:30, so I had to tear into my treat right away. Plus, mine was a bit easier to eat while walking.

DH isn't a fan of marshmallow candy, so he didn't eat any of mine, but we both had bites of the cupcake. Unfortunately, we only finished part of it before we were seated at VN, so there we were at our table, frosting on our fingers, full of cupcake-y goodness :rotfl: We were shameless.

Both items were really good. Extremely sweet, but that's what we wanted. Looks like K-K lived up to the hype for us, and as long as there's not a huge line, we'll stop in next time and try something different.

Our last meal of the trip :sad1: Booooooo! But there will be more trips, we hope.

Our lunch ADR was at 11:30, and we arrived exactly on-time (after we got sidetracked in caramel heaven). We had to sit for only a moment, and then we were seated. Since the restaurant opens for lunch at 11:30, there weren't many people in there as we started. Of course, it got busier as time went on.

Someone came over right away to ask about drinks. I had my usual iced tea, while DH had a root beer. Here's a pic of my extra lemons:

Cute, huh?

Anyway, according to our receipt, our waitresses name was Feder, but that doesn't seem right, does it? She was very prompt in waiting on us, but not particularly friendly. I guess that's 50% in the right direction.

For his appetizer, DH went with the Arancini:

These are fried risotto balls in a meat ragu sauce. DH thought these were really good, but way too much for one person. So, I ended up helping him out a little. Indeed, these were very tasty. The sauce was a little on the salty side, but we both like it that way. I think that's often a bone of contention on the DIS *cough*Le Cellier*cough*, but love of salt really does depend on the palate. The balls themselves are more than just fried dough, but it's hard to describe the flavor. Definitely something worth ordering, though.

I was looking for a lighter appetizer, so I got the mozzarella caprese:

I'm a huge fan of fresh, cold mozzarella, so this is a dish I've often ordered at other restaurants. It definitely did not disappoint. The cheese and tomato perfectly compliment each other, and I loved the flavor of the cheese. I finished it all, of course. Then I went against my "lighter" appetizer idea and ate some of DH's, too.

For my main course, I went with the chicken parmigiana:

I don't know if you can tell by this picture, but this was a massive amount of chicken. The side dish is a spaghetti torta, which is kind of like a spaghetti casserole. The side wasn't anything special, but the chicken parm was sooooooo good! I ate as much as I could, and enjoyed every fried bite. The tomato sauce, plus the slight bit of cheese (I limit how much I get in each bite), plus the chicken made for a perfect combination. I was really happy with this.

DH had the prosciutto e melone pizza:

He was excited about the cantaloupe on the pizza, and he ended up enjoying it a lot. I tried it, and I wasn't a huge fan of the crust (kind of plain), but he really liked it. The prosciutto with the melon is a good combo. The only downside was that it was definitely too much pizza for him, and we couldn't take any with us (we were flying out later that day). Plus, we both were trying to save room for dessert.

I'm a big fan of tiramisu, so that was my dessert choice:

This wasn't any better than tiramisu's I've had before, but it was very good. I was too stuffed to eat it all, but I managed a few bites.

DH's dessert was the pistachio gelato:

As you can see, this came in a fairly large cup. As with the tiramisu, this wasn't somehow better than some of the gelato's we'd had before (or on this trip), but it was delicious. DH ate what he could, and he was happy.

Our final check came out at 12:32, so it only took about an hour to get to dessert.

Total cost OOP before tip? $86.27

Atmosphere? The restaurant has a ton of light in the main dining room, which we loved. There are some interesting seating options, including one long counter with stools around it, which is good for large groups. Posters of Italy are really the most obviously Italian thing about the inner decor, though. We'll give it a 4.

Service? As I mentioned, our waitress was pretty prompt, but not too friendly. The servers all seemed kind of mechanical to us. For that reason, this has to stay at a 3.5.

Food? Pretty darn good. We'd heard mixed things about VN, so we were pleasantly surprised. Can't go with perfection because there was still room for improvement, especially in the desserts, but this is a 4.

Overall rating? We'll be back!

Thanks for the great VN review. After seeing some pretty bad reviews lately I have been on the fence on whether or not I should cancel our ADR. Chicken parm is my favorite meal so we will have to check it out now. I don't really get the side they give you, but the chicken looks great.

Can I just tell you that all of your food pictures are extremely....what's the word... INSANELY GORGEOUS AND SINFULLY APPETIZING. Yeah, that's it. Seriously, though, you guys have some serious photography talents. :thumbsup2 LOVING the reviews. I wanted to lick the screen after I saw that cupcake. I cannot WAIT to try Karamell Kuche in July and August!! :yay: We missed it in January because when we attempted to go, we couldn't even open the door without the surplus of caramel hunters pouring out of the building. It was REALLY crowded. So I'll remember the tip and try to hit it in the morning! :)

Great reviews, off to read your December one!!! The KK food looks awesome, how I love caramel!!!!

Great reviews. We did the DxDP on our last two trips and we just cannot see doing it again. However, I will continually live vicariously through others that are daring (and hungry) enough to go deluxe!

This summer we are trying the QSDP. I'll miss some signature dining - like Narcoosee's - but that's what food reviews are for, right?

great updates, So glad you loved Narcoossee's...we had many great meals there and the last time we ate there I got the Maine Lobster (yummy) and the gelato samplers. I love the FF cheese plates and the dessert. We were surprised by Via Napoli (we had the best lunch there on our last trip)

Very cute lemon presentation!!!

Your snacks from the caramel shop look delicious! We did stop in there and peek in the case, but were in that "stuffed from DDxP" haze :rotfl:.

Via Napoli (pretty sure I am naming the correct Italian Epcot restaurant this time!) looks great! I am curious about that pizza as well - it looks a bit difficult to eat with the long strips of toppings though!

Boo for this being the last review of your trip! :sad1: Great reviews, sounds like you had a wonderful trip! :goodvibes
