We had a 9:10 AM ADR at Chef Mickey's at the Contemporary Resort.
This was our last day to wake up in WDW. Today we would begin our drive home. I thought that a last meal with the characters would be a fun close to our vacation. A buffet would give us the opportunity to eat whatever sounded best and fill our tummies to the max.
I planned a not too early ADR so we could load our car before breakfast and perhaps have time to do a "last one" if we desired, after breakfast, before hitting the road.
We had taken the boat to CR from WL for our California Grill dinner. That was a lovely way to travel. However, we were now checked out from WL so we opted to drive and keep our transportation with us.
There isn't a clear sign when you exit WL to tell you to turn right at the exit. The sign says All Guest Areas Straight. They mean, ALL but Contemporary Resort. If you turn RIGHT, it'll take you about one minute to drive up the road to CR.
The parking here was AMPLE. At this time of morning, it was easy to park next to the walkway that connects CR to the Magic Kingdom. You really are close to MK at CR. Until I saw that the MK bus stops were virtually on the other side of the road in front of CR, I didn't realize how close.
DH's comment was, "Yeah. Like you want to add MORE walking to your Disney trip. WALK to MK."
This was the first time for us to see the CR lobby. Pretty nondescript. The best feature was the low backed sectional sofas that were placed to form several conversation pits across from the check in counter. DH said, "Those couches are nap-a-licious. Except for all the people."
Walk past the check in counter and you find the escalators. Go up to the second floor, past the CG check in counter. Go around to the next escalator which magically takes you to the fourth floor, where Chef Mickey's is.
The first thing we were struck with on the fourth floor was the hum of CR. I think it was the monorail going through the resort. It was a rhythmic hum. Low toned. Almost purposeful in it's up, down, up, down, up, down volume changes. I FELT it. DH and I wondered if the sound carried into the guest rooms. How would you avoid it? I had been thinking it would be cool to stay at CR, but that sound totally turned me off to the idea.
Chef Mickey's is in a cool location. The fourth floor of the CR is the last floor that covers the entire base of the building. Appearance-wise anyway. If you have ever stayed at an Embassy Suites, it feels like that. Embassy calls it an atrium because it's ceiling is a huge skylight with the guest room doors on all floors all opening to a walkway that overlooks the middle atrium.
Well, the ceiling of the CR is the California Grill, so it's mostly solid with a couple sky lights, but WAY UP HIGH. With the monorail going through the resort, guest rooms are only on two sides. The walls where the monorail enters and leaves are windows from floor to ceiling. The result is an airy, lightfilled room.
Chef Mickey's is off to the side, directly under the big tall windows.
The check in line was fairly short, considering what I've read.
After checking in, we were escorted directly to the photo line.
I asked where the nearest facilities were. They were actually in the restaurant. Down a super narrow flight of stairs into a basement feeling space. I bring this up because you must have to leave the restaurant to visit a facility that didn't require navigating stairs. I was told that by the time I returned my men would be at the front of the line.
He was right!
The photo here is another joke in an excuse to overcharge diners for paper with a lot of ink. It's one thing to have a photo taken with a character, like the Akershus or CRT. But this one, like the Tusker House buffet boils down to a family portrait. The Chef Mickey one is more interesting than the Tusker one. Here there is a Mickey statue that your family poses around. If you were to visit year after year, and had kids, the photo COULD serve as one of those milemarkers for growing children. Look how tall you are in comparison to Mickey kind of thing. But still. I think there are other locations that would serve just as well. The photo package was over $30 on top of the cost of the buffet.
I wasn't bothered by the wait, since I didn't really wait. But I would see about by-passing this photo op on a future visit.
I believe that we might have had to wait to be seated at this point, but our buzzer went off right as we were finishing up the photo.
As we were escorted to our table, we were told that the "Fab 5" were in attendance this morning, Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy and Pluto. The way the CM said this, it sounded like the characters could change.
We were lead into the room immediately to the left. There was a wall of windows looking toward MK. We were seated on the far booth away from the window. These are half booths again, with a common bench serving the tables and chairs across. I was happy to be in the corner. We felt a bit removed from the general crowd.
And crowded it was. We were the last table seated in the area.
We were served by Ellen. I must retract an earlier statement. I can't remember a THING about Ellen. Other than the fact that she was very surprised that we didn't want ANY orange juice. Really? Um. Really.
Coffee was already on the table in an insulated pitcher. Help ourselves to the buffet. The characters would be around.
A quick glance around the room showed that Donald would be our first visitor. He was still quite a ways away. I remember thinking that people who were seated closer to those windows would really need to pay close attention to their picture taking. Those windows would be a fierce backlight. You'd have to use a fill flash or simply make sure you didn't have them as your backdrop.
The buffet is a mirror image buffet with a HUGE griddle forming the center line and all the same foods on either side of the griddle. The first area has all the cold offerings.
The next has some kid favorites, including a breakfast pizza, tater tots, and Mickey waffles.
The next has all the hot offerings, including egg dishes, pototo dishes, bacon and sausage.
Then there's the griddle, with pancakes and French toast. When we first arrived, this griddle was completely covered in pancakes cooking away.
There was also a station with dessert-like goodies, including our beloved Krispy Kremes. To the right of the layered display you can see the cheese blintzes. They had hot cherry topping (looked like the bright red canned kind) and blackberry.
We weren't interested in the cold food at this time. We were looking to jump in the line at the hot food. A man was obviously irritated with our attempt to just CUT in the line. The line was reminiscent of the Boma line. It was a traffic jam of people all along the cold buffet and beyond.
It shouldn't have been considered cutting. There was a pile of plates right there. Like you could pick up a plate and start there if you wanted to. I didn't care for the evil eye from the guy so I walked over to the far side of the buffet. A whole 30 feet away, if that.
Lo and behold. An absolutely EMPTY buffet. I guess they had just seated a bunch of people on THAT side of the restaurant. Everyone must have just gone to the first side they saw. Meanwhile, all the same offerings were on the other side.
I know that you are SHOCKED to see the bacon, sausage, tater tots and Krispy Kremes on DS's plate.
The sausage at Chef Mickey's was a thinner type. It was better for DS, and me. We like well done sausage.
My plate:
There were two different potato casserole type dishes. I couldn't resist either. The left one was a hashbrowned pototo with cheese and bacon. The right one was more of skillet potato with red peppers, onion, and sausage. Both were super tasty. The French toast was poorly done. The bread was really bread-y, like it didn't sit long enough in the custard to soak it up fully before being cooked. You could see the lines where the custard ended when you cut it. It had the right flavor though. It satisfied the craving I had for it upon sight.
DH's plate didn't contain anything new so I didn't photograph it. The one thing that he did get that I didn't, I forgot to take a picture of. The cheese blintzes. DH was oooooo-ing and aaaaaaah-ing as he devoured what he got, so they must have been tasty. He ate them with the blackberry sauce. If they were as good as the ones at Cape May two years ago, then I know they were tasty.
At various times throughout our dining, the characters would make their appearance. There was a pattern to the room, but this was easily and OFTEN interrupted. You'd think that you were next and the character would be escorted elsewhere. They would reappear without too much time passing. DS is used to character meals. But if you were going to this one as a first one, I would think that it would be very frustrating, as there was no real way to time the character interruptions to your visits to the buffet, to eating, etc etc.
The plus side was that the characters seemed very un-rushed.
Donald:
Mickey:
Goofy:
Pluto:
Minnie:
This Minnie was FANTASTIC. She was so cute. She had me laughing, which is why my face is beet red.
Other interesting guests included the birds.
Yes. Birds. I guess the birds get in because of the monorail tracks. There were several flyinhg all around. They had found a sweet ride with the buffet in this sheltered location. I just had to take a picture of one. Check him out.
One other item of note during our breakfast. At one point, Minnie was handed a cloth napkin and off she went to another part of the room. Music started playing loudly and we were all told to wave our napkins in the air. We all did. Seriously. I didn't see one person NOT participate. This same thing was supposed to happen at Whispering Canyon Cafe during the horse race. Wave your napkin and hoot and hollar to cheer the racers on. It seemed that few participated in the napkin twirling there. It was like opposite world at Chef Mickey's. But why? I thought there might be a parade or something.
DS said, "Why are we doing this?"
I don't know.
I thought it was weird. DS thought it was weird. And yet, EVERYONE was working out those biceps and triceps, swinging blue fabric in the air, and looking at eachother. Maybe I just didn't get it.
The bill, closed out at 9:56 AM.
2 Adult Breakfast $53.98
KM Breakfast 14.99
Total: $73.46 with tax
I was thrilled to get the Chef Mickey's ADR. It was the perfect end to our vacation. The food was decent. The characters were fun. In the end, it didn't take long at all to eat and greet. I know there are a lot of diehard fans of CM. I know one personally. They ALWAYS eat at Chef Mickey's. I don't understand the attraction of this buffet over the others. Is it the locaton? The Fab 5 with such easy access to the MK? It has to be because there isn't anything that special going on here to deserve such devotion.
But there was nothing that would make me say, I would never eat here again. Convenience rules when it comes to planning your meals. And if it's convenient to go to CR then by all means, go to Chef Mickey's. But I wouldn't plan a day around this character meal.
