My DFi and I are picky eaters and we aren't really adventurous eaters. I know that Brown Derby, Jiko and California Grill are supposed to be very good but when we look at the menu we don't really see something that we like or what we consider "normal." Does anyone else have this problem? Is there a lot of ways to customize the meals? Any picky eaters still enjoy these restaurants?

The chefs will certainly adjust the menu somewhat if you don't like one thing or another on an item (like a sauce or a side dish). I don't know if they will create a whole new entree for you just because you are picky. I guess it all depends on how much you want them to adjust things. I think you might do better to find a restaurant that has more acceptable dishes to start with.

I am in the same boat as you! Very few of the menus at the TS restaurants appeal to me, especially since we aren't big meat eaters. That is why we mainly eat counter service and eat several smaller meals rather than a big one.

My family are picky eatters as well. I just looked at the menus before we chose where to eat and it made my decisions very slim. I also find that for my family breakfast works out better for the Character meals.

Look at the menus again. I'm looking at the Brown Derby dinner menu. My husband and I are pretty much limited to the Filet Mignon (him) and the Half Chicken (me). We'd ask for those without the compound butter (him) and the maple vinegar sauce (me). Husband hates mashed potatoes and I hate rice. My husband would ask for rice with his meal and I would ask for mashed potatoes with mine. Fries are on the kids menu so they are available and can be asked for as a side. Chicken noodle soup is also on the kids menu and can be asked for as an appetizer.

Over at the California Grill, a three cheese flatbread for an appetizer is nothing more than a pizza like thing with no sauce on it. Again, we'd stick with the beef and chicken without the extra gunk and ask what else would be available for sides.

When you go to Dsiney World, your server attempts to make every guest happy. All you have to do is ask. At every place where my husband's meal has included mashed potatoes (he HATES them), he's always been given at least two choices for substitutions that aren't even on the menu.

I guess it just doesn't make sense to me to pay a hefty price for food you don't think you'd like. If I didn't like more adventurous food, I'd find a restaurant that had a menu that made me happy even if it wasn't a signature restaurant.

Check out the menus and find a restaurant that serves what you consider "normal" and enjoy instead of paying big money for food that's been changed to be something like plain old baked chicken.

DH is SOooooo picky. But he enjoys almost everything at WDW. Buffets can be nice, because everyone can choose what they like. Places like Garden Grill and LTT have what I consider "normal" food - vegetables and meats with salad and bread. And most everywhere has a chicken dish, steak or salad that is pretty normal. Or, as others mentioned, can be made normal. You can ask for anything to not be put on it if you don't want sauces or toppings. I would say, check out the menus carefully, and find things that you could order, with or without adjustments. And if all else fails, go with buffets and CS!

Disney is used to people who have chosen to have limited pallets. I think that's why the food that sounds exotic on the menu is actually quite tame and boring when you compare it to what you would get at resteraunts in any international city.

Are you wanting to try new things but are just afraid that you won't like it? If so, then tell your server that and they'll help you find something that you can deal with and at the same time, perhaps you'll find something new to add to your repretoire of things to like.

If you just don't want to try anything new, no matter wether or not you'll like it or not, then stick to counter service and don't go to a sit down place where the chefs are trying to create new and interesting ways of presenting food.

You're probably safe where ever you go because you're at Disney, which is geared towards kids with picky tendencies and simple tastes.

Steer clear of V&A's and, say, Morocco or Japan in the WS, but otherwise you should be able to find chicken dishes or a simple steak where ever you go.

I must say, I don't understand why you're worried about very good themed restaurants if you don't enjoy fine cuisine. :confused3

Actually, Teppan Edo might be a good place for the OP. The chicken and steak is pretty plainly seasoned and the sauces are all served on the side.

Most people consider me quite picky. I've enjoyed dinners at LTT, 50's Prime Time, WCC, Kona Cafe, and Le Cellier. Check out the lunch menus - they seem to be more plain sometimes.

We are picky eaters as well...

Our favorites are:
Le Cellier
Wolfgang Puck Express
'Ohana (dinner)
Coral Reef
Liberty Tree Tavern
Hoop Dee Doo
Hollywood & Vine (I only book this if we are doing the Fantasmic Dinner Package)
Chef Mickeys (for the Roast Beef and Mashed Potatoes)

MMMM Yummy! I can't wait to go!

I am a picky eater but I haven't had any trouble finding something to eat at most of the WDW restaurants. If I am concerned about something that has a sauce, I will ask what is in it and if I am still not sure, ask if I can have it on the side so I can taste it first.

Honestly, most places have at least one steak and chicken item on the menu. But if you are really concerned, then just study the menus and chose places where you know you can order.

Well there's no better time than the present to expand your horizons and taste buds. You may actually surpsise yourselves and enjoy something you've never tried before.

I am also in agreement with some of the posters in this thread. If you really don't enjoy food, why would you really want to spend the time and money going to a signature restaurant? You can always enjoy the ambiance of the resorts by just walking around or sitting in the lobby. If you don't go to restaurants like these when you are home and it doesn't seem you want to expand your culinary horizon than I would stick with CS or maybe a buffet.

I enjoy food, who doesn't enjoy food? I just enjoy what I consider normal food. I like salad, steak and potatoes, chicken and other vegetables.

It is just descriptions such as this "Chermoula-Roasted, Tanglewood Chicken - Served with red skin mashed potatoes, preserved lemons, kalamata olives, roasted garlic, herbs, and harissa. - $26.00 "

I enjoy buffets but I am not a big fan of Disney counter service.

LOL - we are NOT picky eaters and yet we have the same ADRs as you! I just added Yak & Yeti to ours as well. We are not doing HDDR and H&V but are doing CM (I agree on the roast beef and mashed potates!), LTT, Ohana, Le Cell, Coral Reef, CP, and will probably go to WPE as well.

I admit that I had to look up what the heck "Chermoula" was, LOL!

Chermoula or Charmoula is a marinade used in Algerian, Moroccan and Tunisian cooking. It is usually used to flavor fish or seafood, but it can be used on other meats or vegetables.

Chermoula is often made of a mixture of herbs, oil, lemon juice, garlic, cumin, and salt. It may also include onion, fresh coriander, ground chili peppers, black pepper, or saffron.

There are many different recipes that use different spices, and the proportions vary widely. In most recipes, the first two ingredients are garlic and coriander.

Basic Charmoula Recipe 1 garlic clove
1 tsp cumin seeds, toasted and ground
4 to 5 TB extra virgin olive oil
juice of 1 lemon, plus zest
1 jalapeño pepper, seeded and deveined
1 bunch coriander
salt to taste
pepper to taste

Mix the garlic, cumin, four tablespoons of the olive oil, lemon juice and jalapeño in a food processor. Pick coriander leaves from their stems. Add the lemon zest and coriander and season lightly with salt and pepper. Pulse mixture a couple of times, scraping mixture down from side of the bowl in between pulses. Add the remaining olive oil if needed. The mixture should resemble a rustic pesto. Place in tightly closed container and refrigerate for up to two days.

Sounds yummy to me! In fact, I have everything in the recipe except for the pepper already on-hand. I just might make my own Chermoula-Roasted Chicken this week :).

Exactly..... You don't enjoy the "abnormal" food that is served at these restaurants. So why waste your money? That is my point. You are free to like any kind of food you want there is nothing wrong with that. You should go to a restaurant that serves the kind of food you like. I wouldn't think it would be much fun if you had only 1 or 2 choices on a menu.
