We are going to look into ANOTHER cruise line for Alaska

I had started a thread a little while back, Two couples scared away from DCL pricing, for the Alaska cruises in 2016. We are gold CC members and booked before open to the general public. As soon as the two other couples saw the pricing once open to the rest of the world; they said there is no way they will pay those prices. Especially after looking into other cruise lines with comparable itineraries.

So we are going to look into another cruise line for Alaska 2016, switch our current reservation to a different cruise itinerary (and possibly cancel it). Very disappointment but we have been on many DCL cruises and would love to finally cruise with friends.

next year will be the first time we leave dcl for another line. we like leaving from port Canaveral so that has kept us on the best ship that sails from that port however with the oasis coming, that is a whole new ball game. we are booked on the first sailing the oasis has out of p.c.. if we don't like the oasis we will be back to dcl. if we do like it, there may be no coming back.
i'm wondering if the oasis will put a dent into dcl. some say no however even the dis podcast is going to be sailing the oasis and the main reason they gave was cost. time will tell.
I don't blame you a bit for switching. you may like another line and not go back yourself. I really think Disney is taking a chance on all the loyal people who they have pushed to other cruise lines.

There's lots of choices.... Ports beyond Skagway? Glacier Bay and other glacier viewing opportunities?

I like HAL... for the photo packages and Land/Cruise combo's.

Glad you decided to try something new. I think you will be surprised at how little you might miss DCL as you will be soaking up Alaska.

Highly recommend Princess as there were many things that I liked about that line and also how much some of it reminded me of DCL (in a good way) The main areas had that classic line feel that DCL does so well. Light woods and subtle decor. The music they play in all the areas is very nice and sets a nice ambiance for a relaxing cruise. Loved the music in the buffet area as it was all themed with your setting. Nothing like sitting by they window with the music playing sipping a cup of coffee. The food was fantastic and the pizza is so delicious! Movie by the stars was nice with all the blankets set out and with the fresh popcorn (free) set up. We ordered a soda package and got a cup so you can get it at any bar or restaurant. Although I will say the free drinks really were enough. Robes in the room were a nice touch. Anytime dining is nice although I did miss the interaction with the servers so you can choose a set time if you want. Really enjoyed the naturalist they brought on board that gave many lectures and talks over the PA (upper level only) as we went throughout the different sounds and areas.

We've been having this dilemma for the last 2 years. We actually even booked 2 Celebrity cruises that we subsequently cancelled - one for a 10 night trip to WDW, and 1 for our upcomming Baltic. Both Celebrity cruises were itineraries we do plan to sail someday - but we weren't quite ready to jump ship yet.

Now, I think we are. Next summer we're booked on an NCL Northbound that goes to Glacier Bay. DCL doesn't sail one-way itineraries, so that put them out of the running right out of the gate - but even if we had considered a round trip cruise, we could almost cruise twice on another line for a single week on DCL!

We researched HAL vs. NCL vs. Celebrity vs. Princess, and landed on NCL as the best balance of timing, itinerary, price and amenities. We are looking forward to the cruise - for the itinerary, and the ability to explore a new ship and a new line. We're too the point that the itinerary and destinations are the most important part of deciding on a cruise - and unfortunately DCL doesn't give us enough options that fit into our schedule and budget anymore.

Us, too. Done Alaska twice on HAL. Much better itineraries, and prices.

Can you bot elaborate? I know I want a cruiseline that does Glacier Bay so I believe I am down to HAL and Princess. Would love to hear some pros and cons of each.

We have cruised Carnival, RCL & Disney with kids. We are now cruising without kids so the kids programs don't matter. Of the 3 lines we have cruised we much preferred Disney to the others based on the level of service and the feel of the ship....we don't need shopping malls or rock walls, like to feel like we are onboard a cruise ship.

We went on the Wonder to Alaska, we just got a plane to fly us over Glacier bay from Skagway,and.... tracy Arm was far better.

DCL does a great and very popular cruise with a good itinerary to Alaska.

The first Alaska cruise we booked, I was convinced that it was going to be my ONLY Alaska cruise, as I don't do cold. I found that most Alaska cruisers say that Glacier Bay is a must (over Tracy Arm) if you have to make a choice. That being said, I was truly glad to find that Holland America had a cruise that included both Glacier Bay and Tracy Arm. The best of both worlds. I agree, if you're only going to do one Alaska cruise, Glacier Bay is much more dramatic than Tracy Arm. But, Tracy Arm is quite spectacular, also. Both definitely worth seeing.

We had longer port times (compared to DCL) in the ports we visited, also. That gave us much more time to explore.

Of course, by the end of the cruise, I was smitten. We booked a cruise/tour for our next one. And we did the "big" one (as in 12 day land tour & 7 night Seward/Vancouver cruise), again with Holland America. It included the Yukon and many stops much further inland and north in Alaska than the cruise along the ocean can do. And, if visiting Denali, IMO, 3 nights there is important, as there's no guarantee you will actually even see Denali on any given day.

While we haven't been on Princess (yet), the Holland America ships are still in the style of "old-time" cruise ships. Although, they are a bit darker in their interior spaces compared to DCL. And there's only one MDR, although you can do assigned dining or can dine when you want. The buffet is a buffet for dinner, as well. There are 2 extra cost dining venues onboard - Pinnacle Grill and Canaletto. a couple of ships also have Tamarind restaurant.

We've found service for the most part was quite good, but can be somewhat impersonal on occasion. The "feel" of the onboard crew being "servants" more than "friends" is definitely there. But we were usually able to break through to our dining room servers on all our cruises with them and have fun.

Big plus, the pools are covered for the Alaska cruises (but covers can be opened on those days where the sun actually shines).

Biggest downside - the cheapie "buy it now" events they had poolside.

@owensamo , can you please explain why one-way itineraries are better? we're doing DCL this summer, but it sounds like alaska is worth returning to, so i would like to know more about the one-way trips.

The benefit of a one-way cruise for me is that you begin or end in Alaska (nearish Anchorage) so you have the opportunity to see more of Alaska than you can on a one-way cruise. Since we like to take 2 week trips minimum, we'd rather spend the extra days exploring more in Alaska than spending time in Vancouver (or Seattle). We also noticed that port times often appeared to be longer in one-way cruises - not sure if that's actually true or not, but it looked that way in the itineraries we were comparing originally.

The NCL northbound does do Glacier Bay and Hubbard Glacier. We're looking at making it a Cruise Tour (NCLs aren't out yet for 2016) or DIY post-cruise and flying home out of Anchorage. I'm leaning towards DIY in the hopes of saving some money - we'll see how it goes!

Another vote for HAL, we've sailed HAL to Alaska 3 times, and we sailed DCL's 9 day to Alaska. All 4 trips were wonderful in different ways. Glacier Bay was amazing, and having the Rangers come on board both for the adults and in the kids clubs was awesome and the kids were very proud of their badges. Hal also did some lovely things on deck while glacier viewing like the split pea soup and the spiced wine.

Thank you both so much for this great info! I was really leaning toward Princess and now you have me leaning toward HAl, LOL! Oh decisions, decisions!
