We do not live on the coast, but about 60 miles inland!! I thought my DH was crazy when he wanted to board up last night. But today, the track of Rita shows the eye wall passing about 15-30 east of us!! Our neighbor works for a lumber yard, so my DH and 3 other neighbors are our picking up plywood! This is our first hurricne ever. It has been quite an experience so far. It really is a strange feeling walking into a store, and there is no water, or soda, but bare shelves. Going to Home Depot and seeing people lined up with plywood, then being told you are only allowed 4 sheets per person. I still cannot find batteries for our radio and the diapers are sold out!! We have been told to prepare for no electiricity for 2-3 weeks. Yet with all of this going on, our neighbors have arranged for a BBQ over the weekend so we can clean out our freezers. It will be an interesting next couple of days!! Godd luck to everyone that is with us in the path of the storm!! :sunny:

Oh dear! I hope you weather the storm all right.

DH and I were just talking the other night about getting some supplies together to keep in the cellar, just in case. I don't think we would get any kind of severe weather, but there have been long-term power outages in New England due to ice storms, and I think it would give me a little peace of mind.

Best of luck - stay safe!! Good for your dh.

Wow 4 sheet limit? That is harsh!

Good luck and stay safe!

(I say harsh...b/c we're on the coast and the limit last year was 10 or 12 sheets..enough for all our windows :().

Not only harsh but unrealistic. Four sheets is not enough to board up an entire house. Just ridiculous. A good reason to get hurricane supplies prior to hurricane season and have everythinhg cut and stored ready to put up.

We're not taking ours down completely at this point. DH has a feeling we will be needing them again this season. I hope not!

Good luck. Glad you are getting out. Stay safe. My BIL and SILK are evacuating from Kemah. They are on a huge lake there.

On the topic of boards - some shoestring relatives of mine sold their home near New Orleans 3 weeks prior to Katrina. The new owners called them and asked them to come remove the "debris" the left behind. They tried explaining that that was all the plywood for the windows and showed them how they were labeled etc. - and they still didn't want it. We don't know if they managed to get wood to board up for the storm or not. That area ended up with some flooding so it probably didn't matter anyway - but still!

good luck finding your supplies!

Good luck and stay safe! I guess alot of painful lessons were learned with Katrina, and hopefully Rita will not claim as much property and life. :grouphug:

Good luck to you. When Fran came through here, we didn't have electricity here for over 1 week. But you come to enjoy a cold shower. I'll be thinking of you!

Best of luck to you! I'm watching the news like I live in the area and I'm way up here in Vermont!

Be safe and check in when you can, we will be worrying :guilty:

Boston.com had an article yesterday that put New England at high risk for a major hurricaine! Go figure.

When we lived there, we had a lot of supplies in the basement and a generator that could run the furnace and the sump. You can live without AC after a hurricaine...it stinks I'm sure, but you can do it. You can't live w/o heat after an ice storm. That's deadly.

Stay safe! My parents are in NW Houston (close to Tomball), and they're heading to our house tomorrow morning. My mom said that the stores and gas stations were packed yesterday evening. She had to run into WalMart for something and said it was the weirdest sight....empty shelves and people running trying to find things.

I'm taking a 5 min. break to cool off right now. We are working in 100 degree full sun heat right now. We finished the front of the house and have to do about 12 windows on the back. Then, were off to help the neighbors!! Thank goodness all of the kids play well together. My DD and DS's schools have cancelled classes for the rest of the week. I was hoping to get to the library before they shut down, but I do not think there will be time!! Thanks for all of the good thoughts and words. I will keep all of you posted!

Good luck!

Isabel came through here 2 years ago. I'm 100 miles inland and didn't pay a bit of attention. She came through hard. Luckily we were only without power for a couple of days. There were parts of Richmond that were without for weeks.

Good luck and stay safe! I just can't believe all the heartache that these hurricanes are causing.. :(
