And we leave in two weeks! It started with the the 3 yr old Wednesday morning and last night the rest of us started. This needs to go away quick! They won't give us any anti virals because non of us are in the "at risk" category.

I'd call that a win -- I mean, if you're going to get the flu, better two weeks before the trip than *during* the trip.

Exactly! I'd be thrilled (well, you know what I mean lol) to have it 2 weeks before our trip. You can get over and done with before your trip!

Not that this will make you feel any better, but at least you have it now rather than on your trip.

It's been a bad year for the flu. I've known more people who have gotten the flu this year than any year I can remember. I skipped the flu shot this year for the first time in 20 years and for the first time in close to 30 years, I got the flu. Seriously, the last time I remember having the true influenza flu was probably middle school. I could barely get out of bed for 3 days, and I was wiped out for at least a week. But by 2 weeks past when I'd come down with it, I was back to full strength. You'll be fine.

Hugs. As someone said.....better now than later. Keep a close watch for secondary infections that sometimes happen like ear infections and pneumonia and get treatment for them right away.

Sorry you are all sick, hope you feel better soon.

I would say this is a positive. You got it early enough that everyone will be better before you go and less likely to get sick on vacation. Hope your vacation is magical.

Lots of rest, hearty, vitamin-rich soups, vitamin D and C, and tea with honey. The only thing you may find is that your energy is still sapped when you travel so I would plan for ample rest breaks and/or early to bed nights during your visit. I had Influenza A last year and wasn't myself for a good three weeks after. I needed to take it easy and get lots of sleep to fully recover. The kids (who also got it) bounced back much more quickly than I did, luckily. I'd say it took them 1 week/10 days before they were back to normal amounts of sleep and activity.

I agree. As someone who got the nasty cold from hell (I've had the flu, it wasn't the flu, though it was weird and long and bizarrely emotional and so much worse at night) while on our trip and alone with DS for 2 weeks...I'm glad you got it now. You'll likely be exhausted at the start of your trip, and do be aware that an ear infection has been following along with this cold, but at least you'll have most of it done beforehand.

Anti-virals are weird. Have you seen the BIZARRE list of side effects? And of course "side" effect just means "effect we didn't mean to happen". I mean, behaviour stuff, etc? WEIRD. It's best that you couldn't take them. Really.

Not to mention, I'm starting to think that it was a bacterial thing in the first place. Of course can't call it a cold then, nor flu (even with our loosey goosey way of using that word), and doctors would actually have to do some work to figure out what it is, so they won't say that, but it just felt bacterial to me...

Elderberry syrup, vitamins, rest and sleep, honor your body and try to rest it, honor those around you and stay home as much as possible (or wear masks in public so people know to stay away from you if you're medicating), more elderberry syrup....

What is this elderberry syrup I keep hearing about? What do you do with it?
I agree that it could have seriously ruined our trip had it come later. I still have soooo much to do to get ready that being sick it a pain in the butt, and the stomach, legs, head, throat etc.

Weren't you all vaccinated?

3 yr old was vaccinated and she was the first one to get it. I only get flu shots when I'm pregnant.

Tamiflu may help but you would need to get on it fast! Their website has coupons.

No one is puking anymore. We are drinking LOTS of fluids. Hopefully it won't take long to be back to normal.

The flu isn't puking. It basically fever, aches, feeling like you are dying and having no energy for anything. Puking is a virus. I glad it's working it's way out of you all.

Yeah.. Puking isn't the flu.. People call it the stomach flu.. But it really isn't at all. It's a stomach virus. The flu (influenza) is what the flu shot covers..it's upper respiratory with fever and child and body aches.. Not puking. It is very rare for some one to throw up with it.

While more rare, Influenza can cause gastrointestinal problems. Though, yes, typically stomach problems are caused by a different virus.

Yeah it's not impossible.. especially with very young children. But it's generally from the high fever or coughing too hard. Not like a stomach virus.

Two weeks is plenty of time to beat this! I'm in similar circumstance. We leave in less than 2 weeks and 2 of our 3 kids have had it and now DH and I have it. (The coming out both ends kind). Hoping the last kid gets it soon (if not at all). The latter is just wishful thinking.

DD and I had it a week and a half ago. Back to completely normal in a week. You all will be just fine by trip time. Thank goodness you got it now as opposed to closer to the trip or heaven forbid on the trip.

Does it really matter if it was "actually" the flu or not? We had all the symptoms of the flu with the addition of vomiting. Good times. It's all viral, why does it matter?
The middle kids are recovering fast. Hubby and I are still wiped out and the baby is cranky and whiny. I have to go back to school tomorrow and I've stool got a ton to do to get ready for the trip. We can do this!
