We’ve Arrived at Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point!

That’s just not realistic in the cruise industry. People pay knowing the risk, but they want to be ‘first.’ They got what they paid for.

We see the same thing with "maiden" voyages (and even early sailings). Kinks are still being worked out and people seem shocked when not everything is 100%. They're so enamored with being "first" (and snatching up goodies associated with being "first") that they don't stop to think that "first" is also going to come with some bumps. There are some things you CANNOT know until things are being used. (Case in point, the flies. I seriously doubt that the workers were getting the huge amounts of food that are put out when ships visit. Without putting it all out, you aren't going to know that it's going to attract them in the numbers that it is.)

Coco Cay is dumpy.

I haven’t been to Coco Cay since it was a tender port. I do remember though going into the ocean at a part of the island and it was so mucky. My feet were sinking into the sand. It was gross. I wouldn’t mind trying it again to see all the new additions.

Although I’m someone who loves a super quiet beach experience. I’d be happy if Disney just handed me a bag lunch on my way off the boat.

I was at Coco Cay February 2020. It was nice weather, but not really beach weather. There's was nothing dumpy about the place. I'm not really getting your comparison. Sometimes a Hampton Inn is better value for the money than a Waldorf. I have stayed both.

I think this is why multiple reviews are so helpful. Reviews are also emotional. They are based on your mood and experience on that certain day.

Value involves cost not necessarily the quality of the experience… and I believe the OP was discussing his personal experience after visiting both… which very few have actually done.

You said it better than me thanks! Besides workers not laying out large trays of food, no doubt Disney in being a good neighbor hired locally and those folks have been dealing with the problem of flies since birth and just took it in stride the same way I consider Boston driving as normal, but my visiting country brother freaks out lol. Video doesn’t lie (yet thanks AI) so the problem is real but I imagine Disney will adapt. It will take time, but it’s not the end of the world.

I’ve been also looking at the food reviews. People are saying the food is great and they’re showing pictures of ribs and hamburgers. Sorry, but if I’m spending thousands on the sailing, I want more than that for meal on an island. Maybe I’m spoiled now because I just got off of Virgin Voyages to be honest makes Disney food offerings look pathetic. Maybe I’m just now expecting things like asparagus and shrimp salad

So you also think castaway cay’s food is pathetic? It’s similar and hasn’t substantially changed in years.

I was reading Scott's writeup on disneycruiselineblog and he did make the point, that part of the island was uninhabited and it was the first massive serving of food and I don't think anyone was planning on the flies to descend in the numbers they did. The Fantasy is back tomorrow, so we'll see what changes have been made.

From a pure beach experience, discounting everything else, the beaches are not in the same league. I mean once sitting on the beach and getting in and out of the water.

I have been to Vegas a bunch of times. Loved staying at Luxor, occasionally I would stay up a bit at the likes of Park MGM or Paris. Always in the lower tier or middle tier hotels. Loved it and saw nothing wrong with the properties and didn’t understand the dislike I would see in reviews.

My next few trips were at Cosmo, Encore, and Resorts World. Then I had a trip where I spent a few days at Resorts World at the Crockfords, a few days away from Vegas, and then returned for a night at Luxor. Luxor really took a hit in my view that trip.

If I had only been to coco cay this trip I would have not seen just how bad the beach experience is when directly compared to somewhere much better.

I hate to keep bringing it up but Coco Cay does have fabulous food. I enjoy castaways aesthetic way more though.

This is absolutely a fair criticism of being too critical of the island so early. That said, serving food in those conditions once the fly problem was understood was not sanitary. I realize DCL would have had a lot of angry people if they said you need to come back to the ship for prepared food, but it does seem like the proper response from a food safety perspective, and should have been done with a ship credit or something to compensate guests until they could make it more safe.

The majority of beach chairs and umbrellas being placed in a sand pit, away from the water, with no view, is also a design flaw and not opening jitters.

The long pier doesn't bother me as much as others, as I would rather have that than tendering, and 1/2 a mile is nothing compared to what we walk in the parks, in other ports, etc. I am pretty satisfied with what I am seeing to accommodate those with mobility issues too, which my daughter would need. However, a little more thought and spend in the pier area would have kicked it up to be more in line with what people have come to expect from DCL and guest comfort.

I do hold out hope that DCL will learn and fix these two issues with some time. It really is an amazingly beautiful island and @kdonnel's positive experience is promising. But, I personally wouldn't book it for at least a couple of years, which is much longer than just opening jitters. I want to see the vegetation grow more first, how difficult it is to get a chair and umbrella by the ocean without a foot race, if the unsanitary food situation is fixed, etc. Once that stuff comes into line, it looks incredible and exactly what I am looking for in a beach day in paradise.

I believe the issue with the beach is that there are not enough chairs by the ocean for everyone and most of the guests have to sit behind the dunes. I will be there next week and can report back - but that report conforms with the photos and video I have seen posted.

I am already studying the map and planning my rope drop strategy to get a chair on the beach. I’m not even kidding.

I’ve always liked the lunch at CC … I thought the point was to serve cookout/backyard barbecue food to go along with the beach day theme, not gourmet food. Hamburgers, hot dogs, ribs, chicken, potato salad, fruit, chips, cookies, etc. seem to fit that theme IMO.

So the beaches are open to the public and not just for use by DCL guest?

Only when passengers aren't there, if I remember correctly.

Edit: When I go back and read the press releases or website discussing the announcement, the ones I found are unclear. Some seem to suggest lighthouse point will be accessible on the 190 acres DCL donated to the local government, and are unclear if locals can access the Disney-owned part. Others make it sound like they have unlimited access to all of it.

I believe you! We are not rope drop sort of people - and definitely not on a cruise. Our standard Castaway plan is to eat breakfast on the ship, go to the Island around 10:30, rent bikes and ride the trails, eat lunch at Serenity Bay, get a drink at the bar, return the bikes, then get a spot on the family beach around 2:00 when folks start leaving.
