We’ve Arrived at Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point!

Also, what people are forgetting, is that if Disney had proposed dredging, the entire plan may have not been approved by the Bahamian government. I imagine it is also why the pier is so narrow. It is probably the maximum width the government allowed.

Which is worse, no additional island or the long walk?

I dont see anyone advocating for Disney to have dredged to bring the boat closer, so not sure what is being forgotten. I do see, and agree, people concerned that the 1/2 mile walk could constitute a difficulty for young families and others that find a half mile in the sun to be challenging. I have read the various protests and documents regarding the pier concept and I didnt see anything limiting their width. We can speculate on why Disney limited it (cost?), but it is likely to continue to be something people push back on. I imagine the width issue is the same reason there are not benches along the way, as those would take up walking space, about 4 feet to account for the actual seat and leg room. There also may be some storm concerns. All in all, it will be interesting to see how this all plays out but I predict its going to make us appreciate Castaway Cay more.

Can anyone tell if it is a shaded walk? We wouldn't mind the walk but having to do it in the heat/sun baking you at end of the day would not be desirable?

Shade seems like a fair trade off for the able bodied hoofing it so those who need the golfcarts have a shorter wait... I wonder why they skipped that. I imagine they'd have to design it with nature (wind, rain, sun, lightning) in mind but they aren't the first folk who needed to do it.

No shade.

But both going and coming I was graced with clouds for 1/2 to 3/4 of the walk.

The morning we were really excited so there was no issue.

The afternoon also turned out to be a non issue.

I have been battling plantar fasciitis and still did not have much of an issue.

The golf carts were definitely going back and forth. I didn’t notice how you caught a ride but did see them go past with young kids, elderly, and Pooh sized people.

That's a good point too. From what I understand, the area was basically a nature preserve before Disney came in, and the whole project isn't very popular with locals.

Disney purchased the land from a private seller that's believed to be Meritage Hospitality Group. So, no, the land wasn't a nature preserve. Though, Disney did donate 190 acres to the Bahamian government to create a natural park and preserve.

The pier looks kind of narrow, like it's hard to imagine there being adequate room for a bunch of vehicles and hundreds of people walking, all going back and forth. Maybe it seems wider from a POV actually on it? The beach looks fine, but other than the water color, not much different than some of the nice East coast beaches I've been to. What is there to do besides lounge on the beach, swim, and eat? Are there waterslides like the ones at Castaway?

They were going for that guardians of the galaxy narrowness when you exit the show room.

I'm the odd one- but I love that pier. Your boat docks in the open ocean, off you go and you literally get to walk through the ocean to an island, turn around and have the most awesome view of your ship out there in the ocean? Have to walk it twice- once on the way there and once on the way back..

They should make a shirt that says "I made the long walk to Lookout Cay" with a picture of the dock and ship in background. Sell it for $30 at the first shop cruisers see.

Yes, Disney built the long pier to avoid tendering.

No, there aren't trams running on the pier. There are golf carts for those who need them and everyone else can walk. It's not that far. I think people are making a big stink about a minor inconvenience.
It will be very very hot to walk that far in the full sun.
July and August in the Bahamas heat - ouch!
