The Cast:

Me (I’m not telling my age): Chief decision maker, planner and organiser extraordinaire
Darren (39): Mr. Grumpy, Marathon Man and Map Reader
Mollie (10): Jekyll & Hyde pre-teen and big girls blouse
Kirsty (4): Scaredy Cat and Drama Queen

Today we are off to Epcot. We are only on day three and already its getting hard to get the troops moving in the morning. Eventually Darren is dispatched to sort out the drinks whilst I sort out the girls. We have decided to eat at the food court today so we make our way up there. It is total pandemonium, it would appear everyone and their wife is eating at the ASMo food court today. We manage to eventually get some food and scrabble for a table. Not very impressed.

Anyway, we reach Epcot at approx. 09:30 and it is heaving, I know the Food & Wine festival is on but this is just sooooo busy and its very hot! We have never managed, for one reason or another, to do Test Track so we made the decision on route to head straight there and pick up some FP if the queue was too long. Well, the standby was 120 mins already and the FP was for something like 5:00p.m., I told you it was busy. We leave it for another day and head on over to Wonders of Life. On passing someone gives us 4 FP for HISTA. We walk onto Body Wars, not having done this last time I didn’t really know what to expect, I actually found it quite unpleasant and uncomfortable and the girls both hated it, oh well! We have just missed Cranium Command so we head out and play with all the discovery things instead which was good fun. Darren has read all about Mission Space and has decided he wants to try it so he goes and picks up a couple of fast passes but they’re not till 6:00 at the earliest.

Suddenly its time for our HISTA FP we were given and here I have to explain something to you, Darren is 6ft 2 with long legs, long arms, long hands, long nose, long everything (but we won’t go into that) I’m 5ft 2, Mollie is practically the same height as me and Kirsty being only 4 is one of the few people I can still look down on! Darren doesn’t believe in ambling, with the length of his legs he can’t amble anyway, hence he’s Marathon Man, aka Mr. Grumpy. Generally, whilst Darren is striding ahead, Mollie and I amble whilst Kirsty just dawdles and stops every 2 seconds to look at something intewesting. So Darren being a ‘Man on a Mission’ marches us out of Wonders of Life and over to HISTA, he keeps nagging us to hurry up and keep up, which is very hard to do with short legs, a 4 year old who stops every 2 seconds to say “look mama isn’t this intewesting”? and a heaving mass of people everywhere. Eventually he realises he’s been talking to strangers and thin air for the last 5 mins so he gets out his binoculars and once he has us in his sights he uses his foghorn of a voice and instructs us to “get a bleeding move on”! Well its just toooo hot and toooo crowded so I have a bit of a meltdown, I’m afraid to say I lost what little cool I had and we ended up having a bit of a shouting match, my apologies to anyone in the vicinity of the vertically challenged mad Scottish woman threatening to throttle the 6ft 2 English man!

Anyway we make it in plenty of time for the show. Again I’m very dubious about taking Kirsty on this, especially as every time she watched the WDW video she was adamant she didn’t want to see this because of the snake but I’m too busy stewing and sulking with Marathon Man (my own form of Hadrian’s wall) to follow my instincts! So we go in and yes, again it’s a total disaster, she refuses to put the glasses on which is no big deal and its way too loud for her but when the snake part came up she freaked out yet again and yet again I had to run for the exit and beat a hasty retreat. We meet up with Marathon Man and Mollie and head over to Living Seas to get in out of the sun, see the fishes and find Nemo and I continue to sulk with Marathon Man by ignoring every piece of useless information he is imparting about the fishes as I can read them for myself, thank you very much! We spend a while in here because its nice and its cool. When we get out we decide, via some grunting and shoulder shrugging on my part, that its just too busy and too hot and that we’d rather all go back and have a swim so that’s what we do.

Ahhh, this is better! the water is cool and the pool isn’t too busy. Now I have to own up that I have been known to sulk for days, nay weeks, my last super duper sulking extravaganza lasted months. I am one of Scotland’s finest sulkers (if only sulking were a national sport, Scotland would finally be good at something) but it requires a lot of energy to be a top sulker and it was just too hot for it so I decided to do the decent thing and kiss and make up (Hadrian’s wall gets knocked down, till next time). After a nice dip to cool off we all have a nice snack, then I chill out and read my book while Darren reads the paper and the girls enjoy themselves splashing about.

After a while we get dressed and head back to Epcot about 6:00 p.m. Our FP time for Mission Space has come around but we both decide we don’t really feel in the mood for trying this out so we hand them to the first couple we come to in the queue and head on over to World Showcase. We arrive in Mexico so we jump on the El Rio del Tiempo. Is this a Wollertoaster, mama? no babe this is a boat. Will I get wet, mama? no Kirsty you’ll be fine! trust me! Huh, I can’t believe I just said that, so far we’re on day three and I’ve subjected her to spiders, Hopper, a snake, Splash Mountain and near drowning and I’m telling her to trust me! she’s going to need years of therapy after this holiday and being catholic I really don’t need anymore guilt!

Next we head into Norway, we have a look around, Maelstrom is a 20 min wait so we decide to give it a miss. We stop in China, Germany and Italy for a snoop around. We try to get something to eat in Italy as we are by now starving but it’s a 50 min wait so we head off to try somewhere else.

Outside we come across a female statue, actually Kirsty, finding something much more intewesting about her shoes, isn’t looking where she’s going and literally bumps into the statue. The statue bends down and taps her on the head, well her face was a picture! DID YOU JUST SEE THAT? she asked. The statue then shook her hand and tickled Mollie. By now a small crowd had gathered and we spent a little while watching the statue ‘play’ with the kids, some of their little faces where just so funny. We really are starving now and the nearest place at hand is Morocco, we have given up hope of getting a seat in a restaurant, so we opt for counter service here. Darren had meatballs. Mollie, Kirsty and I had a chicken wrap. We all enjoyed it we were so hungry.

After having a look around Japan we find a good spot outside on a bench for Illuminations. Darren is dispatched in search of some drinks while we wait. I end up with a delicious strawberry daiquiri. Mollie and Kirsty have made friends with a little American boy which keeps them busy till the show begins.

Illuminations begins, I, actually we, absolutely love this ‘show’, and it is as brilliant as I remembered. Its so breathtaking it always brings a lump to my throat!

Afterwards we decide to grab another quick drink and just sit and wait for the crowds to disperse before attempting to leave as Epcot was still absolutely heaving. On the way out the girls were playing a game of jumping from light to light (those little twinkling lights on the path) when a CM who was cleaning up stopped and instructed us to follow him, he could’ve been taking us to the darkest, quietest spot to mug us or murder us (I watch too many crime programmes) but we’re the trusting sort, so we follow him anyway. He took us a little bit off the path to where there is a spot that has four large paving slabs with their very own spectacular light show, it was amazing.

I love Epcot but what I love about it is how its not really about rides to me its about chilling out and ambling along, stopping in all the countries for a snoop around and just winding down a little but today you couldn’t do that, the kids love stopping in the different countries and doing their mask and having their passports stamped but again today you just couldn’t get near them, it was just too busy so I’m glad today wasn’t my first experience of Epcot otherwise I think it may have put me off for good. Don’t get me wrong, we still had a great day but it just wasn’t the most pleasant experience of Epcot we’ve had.
