It all started with a biscuit. One of those made-from-scratch, mouthwatering pork chop biscuits that they serve at Hardee's. The kind that tastes so good you want to run back to the kitchen and give the biscuit-maker a hug. The kind that's so good you don't even think about things like carbs and calories.
The kids were in school. DW and I decided we would have a morning date at Hardee's before we went off to our appointed rounds. The conversation turned to Disney World, as it often does -given that we are both WDW addicts. (And, no, we don't want an intervention!) We spoke of how fond DS7 (henceforth known as Gomer) enjoyed doing all the thrill rides over the course of our 9 previous family trips (see, I told you we were addicted). We also spoke of how DD10 just wasn't that into the rides, but wanted more than anything to have some "girl time" with DW.
DW says to me, "So Zippa, why don't you take little Gomer down to Disney World for a boys' only trip?" My eyes lit up; my heart skipped a beat. Don't get me wrong, I have always loved DW strongly and passionately, but at that moment I just had to just kiss her romantically on the lips right there in Hardee's -in front of the grizzled truckdrivers and paunchy traveling salesmen huddled around their steaming cups of coffee.
DW and DD made plans to have a shopping spree and a spa treatment or three (boy, is that gonna cost me), and I made plans for Gomer and me to go to WDW in mid-June.
AAA hooked me up with a sweet package -staying at Pop Century with 4 day hoppers for right at $900. Sweeeeet! My anticipation slowly turned to dread as I considered the impending 9 hour drive with no help. So a couple of weeks ago I get a Southwest Ding Fare and consult with DW. She tells me I'd me crazy NOT to fly. (Did I mention I love this woman?
I love, love, love her so much I want her to bear my children.... wait a minute, she already has). So enough of the breezy narrative. Let's get down to the cold hard facts about the trip.
Who:
Me (42) - Zippa D Doodah as I am known around these here parts. Raconteur, WDW aficionado, CB troublemaker, proud former WPASADIAN, co-pastor of a church along with my wife in my spare time. Nine notches in my belt to represent my previous WDW vacations. I'm one of those guys who becomes 9 years old when he walks through the gates of MK. I love everything about WDW -characters, rides, parades, food, you name it... I am the chief planner for my family. DW wouldn't know the DIS if it bit her in the... oh, never mind. Everyone really likes the trips I plan. I usually try to throw a little surprise in there for everyone each time. One time I told everyone we were staying at ASMu, but I booked us for CBR. Hey, don't judge me. Dat's just how I roll!
DS7 - Gomer as we'll call him in this TR, in honor of the piano player in CBJ -his first favorite attraction as a toddler. He is finishing up first grade four days before we embark on WDWpalooza '07. Gomer enjoys Pirates, dancing to what he calls "booty-shaking music", hanging out with me and DW around the church, action figures, Pirates, Goosebumps books, thrill rides, Pirates, LaKisha (it's been a tough week for the little guy), laughing from way deep down in his belly, and did I mention Pirates?
He knows his way around MK as well as his old man. The dude consistently wipes the floor with me when we play the Magic Kingdom board game. Here's a picture of him.
When: We fly out early on Monday, June 11 and return the afternoon of Friday, June 15
Where: We are laying our heads at the Pop Century during those few hours each night when we aren't hitting the parks pretty hard. Make no mistake about it; this will be a short trip. But contrary to all our previous family trips, this boys-only affair will be full throttle. I compare it to a few lost weekends I had in Vegas as a young man, but that's a tale best told on another day.
Why: As alluded to earlier, it's part male bonding, part ride festival, part vacation. It's going to be all good.
I've not done a pre-TR before, so I'll try to add things along as they come to me. I hope you, gentle reader, enjoy reading it if only half as much as I have enjoyed writing it.
