Wondering if anyone out there has Celiac Disease and has done WDW. I was just diagnosed a few days ago and am now very fearful of all the wonderful restaurant visits we had planned. My husband thinks I'm being overly fearful but seeing as even the most minute amount of gluten can cause problems, I don't think I'm over-reacting. Any help/advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

on one of the web sites there is advice - wish i could remember which one - keep looking

When I took a friend with the disease, disney dining suggested calling the chefs at the places we were to dine the day before. it really wasn't necessary. Just tell the server - they can tell you what to avoid on the menu.

She could eat Ezekial bread made from sprouted grain, and goodings carries it in the freezer section.

Check Deb Wills' website - she addresses food allergies www.wdwig.com
Be sure when you make reservations to let them know you have this problem - you might also want to call the restaurant the day before to alert them. Also alert your server and he can sometimes suggest items. I am allergic to milk and I have not had a problem - sometimes the chef will come out to talk with me about what I can and cannot have. Good luck!

You might want to post your question on the Disabilities Board - they can be very helpful about things like this. THere is also info at Orlando Trip Planner.com - take a look at their Special Needs Pages . Also look at the Orlando Services page. THere are personal chefs in the Orlando Area that might could help (?) depending on your needs.

Plus, you can have special meals prepared for you but I THINK you are supposed to call ahead to let the restaurant know (they may have a special number but if you call 407 WDW DINE and ask, I'm sure a Cast Member can help you - ask for a supervisor if you have problems.

Hi lmk,

I was diagnosed with Celiac 3 years ago (right after my son was born). I went to WDW this past May with my family and had a wonderful time! We ate at only Disney restaurants, mainly because we used only Disney transportation.

I called and made a PS for every meal beforehand. When making the PS tell the CM that you have an allergy to gluten (most people don't understand an auto-immune disease so I just call it an allergy - that works). Some CM's will give you a phone number of the restaurant (if it's in a hotel) or the main chef at MK (if it's there). They will note it on the PS and I called most of the chefs.
But you don't have to, because they look at the PS and check for allergies.

The chefs would come out and greet me and talk to me, asking what I wanted. Most made me special meals.

The places I loved eating at were (very helpful chefs!):
- Liberty Tree Tavern - the chef made my rolls, and STUFFING (very yummy) to go with the platter of meat.
- Chef Mickey's chef made me a dessert, walked me thru the buffet line and told me what I could eat and what I couldn't eat. He also made special food to replace whatever I couldn't eat!!
- Cinderella's breakfast (CRT) - I got pancakes!!! yum again!
- ohana's for breakfast (pancakes again)
- Artists Point (WL)
- California Grill (CR)

all the places I ate gave me wonderful food. here are some of the other places:
- 1900 park faire breakfast (they have omlettes) and
for lunch (the chef here was ok, but not as knowledgable
about celiac as I would have liked)
- crystal palace (you can eat some things on the buffet, but
the chef didn't make anything special for me)
- Whispering Canyon (WL)

Enjoy Disney and don't worry the disney chefs will take care of you! The hardest part for me was eating at counter service - my kids and husband could eat anything anywhere and I had to grab hershey's bars and mcD's french fries.

Feel free to PM me for any questions!!!

If you don't know about it already, take a look at www.celiac.com.
There is a link to the gluten free mall on that web site. Also, I love the flour I by on-line from the Gifts of Nature.

I forgot to mention a few other places that I ate:

- Hollywood and Vine for Fantasmic Dinner Package (buffet had some ok selections for me to eat - again, chef walked me through the buffet).

- 50's Prime Time for lunch was good too (chef came out and asked me what I wanted - he prepared me some chicken with mashed potatoes and a veggie, and a big chocolate milk shake).

- Rainforest Cafe in downtown disney. They were very careful to understand what I was allergic to, and I think I wanted a burger there so I got a burger with no bun - how boring, but it was good to me!

- We had planned to eat at Le Cellier, but my son wasn't feeling well that day so we never made it there, but I bet that would have been a good meal.

- I have read (on DIS) that Ohana's for dinner and HoopDeDoo Review could be trouble. I read that people with other allergies had gone there and had difficulty getting the wait staff to bring them food they could eat. I can understand that about HoopDeDoo (since it is a dinner show), but I would think the chef at Ohana's should be able to accomadate you (maybe it was the luau ?).

- Also, bring snacks that you know you can eat to the parks. I ate ice cream at most of the parks, although I know I should be careful even about ice cream, but I didn't have any problems.

I am very careful about what I eat. I ask about every ingredient, spice and even what kind of chocolate sauce they use for the milk shake. This is a very overwhelming dietary change for you, but I'm so glad to see you taking it seriously. Tell your husband that you are not overreacting... you are being smart :D
