WDW - Universal - Airport

I'm traveling with four young adults who have asked(actually begged) to get in some time at Universal. Spending most of the trip at WDW and was planning on using DME.

Trying to figure out the easiest way to do this.

Not sure if we should stay at Disney the whole time and just get a rental car for a day or two to shoot over to Universal or if we should check out of Disney and spend the last night or two at Universal.

Transportation wise which option is the easiest:

1) DME to Disney - Rental Car from Car Care Center to go to Universal - Return Rental Car to Car Care Center - DME back to Airport (Thus staying in a Disney hotel the entire time).

2) DME to Disney - Rental Car from Car Care Center to Universal - spend last night at Universal - then return Rental Car to Airport rather than Car Care Center (Is this even a possibility?) Thus staying at Disney most of the trip and Universal for a night or two.

3) DME to Disney - I alone take DME back to airport, get a rental car from the airport - Drive back to Disney to pick everyone up and move to Universal and then return rental car to airport.

Any thoughts?

We've done a split stay (only we did US/IOA first). We picked the car up at the airport and returned it to the Dolphin, so I'm sure you can do the reverse.

I'd stay on-site at WDW for that portion of the trip and then on-site at US/IOA for the last night or two. Staying on-site at Universal gives you unlimited express pass entrance to the rides (like an unlimited fast pass). There are some rides its not good for (Harry Potter mostly), but its a huge time saver.
