WDW Transportation Question

Well folks... I had to strain my brain today with a question from a co-worker (on reg job) about WDW tranportation!

The young lady has a serious illness and will be visiting WDW in November. Her family has insisted upon renting her a scooter in leiu of a wheelchair. She is staying at PO and plans on doing everything possible at the parks and many resorts.

For the life of me, I could not remember seeing a scooter loaded on the buses, monorail or boats. I do recall seeing several on property and in the parks but not on transportation.

Can anyone at WDW help me guide her on access. Unless, she had a serious relapse, she could bounce between the scooter and a wheelchair.

Thanks!

my parents went down with us 2 years ago and we rented the motorized wheelchairs for them. they were able to load on all transportation. my mom got a little shaken up in the beginning because she wasn't used to the scooter and they load them on the buses first and everybody else has to wait. she was really self-conscience and felt everyone was looking at her. everyone was really helpful except the one time they went back to the VWL without me and the boat cm's just watched her try to load on by herself and she ran into some problems and she had to practically lift the ecv on the boat by herself. practically everything at the parks are handicapped accessible so your friend should have nothing to worry about!!

We were at WDW this past December with a party of 6, and we had four ECV's (motorized chairs). Disney makes is extremely easy for ECV's to have access to all transportation, especially the busses and monorails. I suggest you jump over to the DISabilities Board for more information.

The ECV's at WDW are rented first-come first-served. I suggest renting one from a service there in Orlando for the length of the trip, then you have it at your disposal. They will deliver and pick up from your hotel.

I'm going to move this to the disabilities board so you can get some more help.

You don't say how young the "young lady" is, but you should be aware that in general, the parks and the outside rental places will not rent ecvs (motorized scooters) to be used by anyone younger than 18 years.
The FAQ about disabilities at the top of this board can answer all your questions about renting wheelchairs/ecvs and traveling with them on the various types of WDW transportation.
Here's a link to that thread.
