In case any of you were following the other Heelys thread but were daunted by the 90+ posts, I thought I'd start a new thread about the e-mail I sent to WDW yesterday and the response I just received (I also posted this on the original thread).

I e-mailed WDW yesterday to ask about Heelys. Below is the response they sent me [I made it red], which included the text of my e-mail to them [I made it blue] (so you can all see that my letter was not "slanted" against Heelys). So here is the official response:

Dear Eric,

Thank you for contacting the Walt Disney World Resort.

While we appreciate your interest, please note due to safety concerns, shoes with wheels are not permitted inside any Walt Disney World Theme Park.

If you have questions or need further assistance, feel free to contact us.

Please include your full name, E-Mail address, and reservation number if applicable on all correspondence.

Thank you!

Sincerely,

Gail Williams

I will be staying at POFQ in November with my family. I have read conflicting anecdotal information about whether or not shoes with wheels in them ("Heelys") are permitted inside the WDW theme parks.
I would like to know before we go, so I can prepare my kids in case they are not permitted to wear them inside the theme parks.

So, please answer my question: Are shoes with wheels ("Heelys") permitted insode WDW theme parks?

THANKS SO MUCH!

Debate solved. The official WDW stance on Heelys is now known, at least to DISers.

Hey! Thanks for posting that! My sister is obsessed with her Heely's and I wasn't looking forward to my DL trip because of people complaining about her... :woohoo:  But again, thank you for posting that!

Thanks, Eric! Not that this klutz wears shoes with even 'normal' heels, never mind ones with wheels in 'em!

You might not even want to take them at all... even the resorts don't allow rollerblades or scooters so I would doubt they would be too receptive to heely's either.

Thank God for that. How obnoxious are those things?? I swear and I blame the parents for allowing their kids to be so obnoxious in inappropriate places with those things on.

I agree with you about your feelings on these being used in inappropriate places. My 9 y/o ds begged for these for quite awhile, dh took him to get a pair a few weeks ago. He uses them around the neighborhood mostly. He and about 10 other boys use them all around our Country Club. I am very strict about where I let him wear them. I don't let him wear them in my house obviously or in stores or restaurants. I would never dream of letting my ds bring his heeleys to Disney, much to his disappointment.

I agree with you! I don't have a problem with them persay, just when they're worn inappropriately.

These are just as dangerous as skateboards or rollerblades. Kids who are using them should also wear protective gear (helmets, elbow and knee pads). For kids who complain about that, like mine used to before they realized I will absolutely never "bend" on this rule, just say, "You only have one brain, and it does NOT heal like your broken arm or a bruise will." And never back down on this issue. It only takes one fall to do permanent damage. Take your kid to the "brain injury" section of the hospital and you'll be 100% convinced.

I am just back from WDW and I couldn't belive how many kids I saw with them on. My daughter has them and asked if she would wear them and I said absolutely not!

ITA. And for anyone who's interested...just google "heelys injury" & see what comes up.

I've heard people say they've seen a lot of kids on heeleys at WDW. I just know my DS will have major meltdowns if and when we see kids in the parks on them (since I'm not even going to let him pack his for our upcoming trip). I will be the most mean, evil mom on the planet b/c I didn't let him bring them. Oh well, won't be the first time and I'm sure it won't be the last! ;)

Some kids came into the beauty shop I work in with their Mom the other day and were tooling around on their Heely's bumping into things and almost into people and Mom just let them go. I was really ticked off by them. Working with sharp objects and hot tools is dangerous enough without some kid bumping into you while you work. They should never be allowed to use them indoors! :confused3 What is it with parent today who don't think about anyone else but them and their kids.

We don't even allow them at the elementary school I work at. I know kids thiink they are cool but they are dangerous and mark up the carpet.

the thing the heelys is that even though they are not allowed at disney world, a lot of kids wear them anyways. the problem with this is (and i've seen it occure several times myself) is that kids hit holes and patches on the sidewalks and fall or they fall over other guests and the first thing they (and parents) blame is disney and they cause trouble for guest services- i've also seen a girl run into a max at magic kingdom and knock him over and the father clamed "max should have moved out of her way so she wouldn't have run into him"
*sorry i really don't like when people break the rules and then blame others for effects of breaking the rules

I know I saw some of these when we were there last month. I can't remember where though. Is it that they look like normal sneakers, so they don't stick out and they can easily be "snuck" into the parks? And who is supposed to enforce? Any CM or just security? I'd hate to be the poor college program CM who tries to stop some kid in heelys and have some "rules don't apply to us" parent chew her out.

My DD and I were in Target about a month ago and saw a boy, maybe 9 or 10 happily going through an aisle. Somehow he wiped out and hit his head on a shelf. Seriously folks, I thought he broke his neck as he just lay there in a heap. My DD was horrified! His parents ran over and he sat up in a daze, crying his eyes out. I do not know what happened from there because I thought it was impolite to stare. However, it is something I NEVER want to see again. Skates are fun, but there is a proper place for their use. I know I sound like a spoilsport, but witnessessing that accident really changed my perspective on heelies. :sad2:
