WDW Road Signs

To Dznefreek: I agree with you that Disney can do just about anything they want...and after all, they are private roads.

To others of you: In my original post I said "with all the amazing graphics...I've always thought they could have come up with a better design".
I never suggested they had to be overly stylized or any less basic than they are...merely that they might have been differently designed.

And lastly to all of you: thanks. My sister (a non-Disney person) was at my house yesterday and she was looking through "Since The World Began". She couldn't understand why the book included an entire page devoted to the process that went into designing the road signs. I told her when it comes to WDW, no topic is too small to be covered by someone, somewhere. Then I bet her $10 that I could get at least 12 people here to respond to a post about road signs...and I did.

We've all seen them.

Big purple and red signs reading "Disney/MGM Studios - Next Right" or "EPCOT Resorts - Next Left".

They were created by the firm of Sussman/Prezja, hired by Eisner, who had liked the work they had done in LA for the '84 Olympics.

Am I the only person who thinks they are really boring? Sure, they're just road signs and they do the job they were created for, but with all the amazing graphics that exist throughout the property, I've always thought they could have come up with a better design.

What do you think? Thumbs up or thumbs down on the road signs?

I always like them, and them being a uniform bright vibrant color let you know you haven't wandered off of Disney Property. I love that around the perimeter of the property, like on 192 when you get to the area that you can see AKL from that road, all of the traffic light posts are also the same color purple. You know you are close to HOME!

It is from the book "Since The World Began" page 141. The book was released for the 25th anniversary.

I remember those signs! They really are SO cute. Between the 2, maybe I do like the old ones better, but perhaps with the major growth of WDW, it was just impractical.

PanamaMike that is too funny...and you KNEW that we'd chime in. 10 more dollars in the Disney fund!

The biggest problem with the signs is not that they are boring, but that there aren't signs for things that you are looking for. For example, there are no signs for Old Key West at all coming into the property from 536, yet the third exit takes you directly there. In addition, it would be nice if the signs had road names, since it's much easier to give directions using road names.

Exactly!!!! I had never stayed at the All Stars until my last trip and I cannot tell you how frustrated I was driving around attempting to find the resorts with the poor signage at Disney. Its TERRIBLE!! You see one sign that will say "Coronado Springs --->>>" so you turn and there wont be any more signs for a while. It is a big place! I can get from park to park no problem, but I get very turned around sometimes (finally went INTO the Animal Kingdom entrance last time I could not find something and the girl told me how to get there - following signs that lead to ANOTHER resort).

I think for a place that has so many first time visitors each year, they need to do better.

I'm not sure if I agree with dznefreek or not. I inquired one day why all the busses had license plates when they did not leave the site. I was told that by licensing them the state paid for the roads. Yes, they are private roads but I believe the state must have some control over them.

Maybe I'm just a bad driver or maybe signs in Louisiana are different, but next right generally means take THIS next right, not the next right after this right

Anyone else notice this?

ljones,
As far as I can remember, signs at WDW that say next right mean the very next right, not the second right. I have indeed seen signs at WDW which indicate "second right" (the one that comes to mind is World Drive southbound at the Buena Vista Drive interchange, where Blizzard Beach is next right, and MGM Studios is second right).
