In the summer of 1972, my family drove to Florida from New Jersey. I-95 was just completed, and WDW hadn't been opened for a full year.
Some years ago, I found a package containing brochures and maps I had collected from roadstops on the way. (Even as a 10 year-old, I was an info-maniac.) The package contained an original park map--I am shocked by how similar it is to a current one--and brochures on various Florida tourist attractions, e.g., Silver Springs, Cypress Gardens, Monkey Jungle, etc.
I also found info on the Days Inn motel chain which was brand new back then. Can you believe that it cost $3 per night to stay there along the I-95 corridor?
I don't know how much the CR or Polynesian cost back then, but I do know that when we got to Orlando, we stayed in a Days Suites that was alongside the Orange Bowl. Because it was a suite, it cost a bit more than the $3 my parents paid to stay at the Days Inns in North Carolina and Georgia.
