WDW May Be Enforcing Smoking Fines

Oh you poor dear...:grouphug:

Just wondering how it/if it were possible for you and your dear 4 year old to hang around and use Disney bus transport???...those fumes are certainly not light-weight!!!
:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: Geesh, I think I need a cigarette... and I don't even smoke!

The cigarette smoke wafts through the vents to the next rooms and non smokers will be able to smell it. I'm sure CM and other guests will not find the smoke smell on you intrusive. It won't get into the carpet and drapes, .>>>>>>>
Hello!!!!!I would find the smoke smell on you intrusive.:confused3 I work in a doctors office and when we open the glass to check in a papteint, the smell on the smokers if enough to knock you over! And yes, the smoke smell does permeate the carpet and drapes.

Personally I think smoking should be outlawed everywhere in WDW.

I'm so glad you're not in charge then. :rotfl2:

I do not think they should do that if they are on there balcony

I've heard that they have cameras covering the outsides of their buildings.

To collect that $500 fine....it helps that Disney has a time-stamp and some video tape of the act.

Folks that try to sneak a smoke at 2:00 am might not realize that the cameras run 24 horus a day for security reasons.

Disney is very good at hiding cameras... you can't see them popcorn::

just curious and a bit nervous about my question:

both hubby and i smoke, we smoke in allowed areas. but i am wondering how they know if you smoke in your rooms? do you have to be caught at it? but since we do smoke, i am sure we smell like smoke, so if we come back into our room smelling like smoke, are we going to get busted for smoking in our room?

i hope this made sense.
I work in a hospital where we have had no smoking for a long time. Sometimes, when I get on the elevator, there is a very strong smoke smell from someone who was already on the elevator. So, I know that smoke smell can stick on the clothing. I am a nonsmoker and have nasal allergies to smoke, so I might notice it more than the average person.

I am concerned about how they will be able to tell someone was smoking and that they will 'assign' the 'smoking violation' to the correct people.

Last December, DH, youngest DD and I took a quick trip to SSR. At the middle of our stay, we had to switch for one night to Coronado. When we returned to SSR, we ended up in the same room we had been in before (we needed a roll in shower room, so that was probably why). When I walked into the room, I could smell that someone had smoked in it. DH didn't think so at first, but after about 15 minutes in there, he agreed with me. We could tell the smell was strongest in places like on the couch and on the bedding where there was lots of cloth.
We called Housekeeping to see if there was anything they could do to rid the room of smoke smell, but they said there wasn't, so we just aired it out by keeping the door to the patio open for a while.

We were only gone 24 hours, but it was pretty obvious the room had been smoked in during that time.
If the new policy had been in effect and the Housekeeper noticed the smoke smell the next cleaning day, would we have been charged????
What about Housekeepers who are smokers themselves? There are studies that show the average smoker has diminished sense of smell. How will they know the room has been smoked in???

Thought you might it interesting to read what the CM's are being told.

From another site:

"At the hotel, the email that told us about the new no smoking policy and promised us data on designated smoking areas (which still hasn't come thru) specifically told us *not* to enforce the rule unless a guest complained. Go figure!

Bottom line for most CMs is that they are *extremely* unlikely to get into trouble by *not* enforcing such rules, and *very* worried that a smoker's complaint about them (accurate or not) will land them in trouble. When the MK first banned smoking, I resolved to enforce it vigorously until I got push-back from supervision, and then stop. So far, no complaints (and one guest compliment)."

I can only venture a guess on this one. When one smokes in a room vs. having smoke on their clothes it would be a stronger smell. Do you smoke in your home. Them it might be stronger in the closet where you keep your clothes and suit case.

I was at a Marriott over the weekend. I had a cold and I could still smell that someone had smoked in the room before me. I went right down to the desk and asked for another room.

Thank you, Darlak, for sharing that - it echoes the results of my informal research on my recent 10 day stay at WL. Sort of - "don't ask, don't tell" if you're a CM - until a non-smoking guest complains.

Which I think works. WDW, last I checked, was not a police state.

My poor dd, 31, heads over to my house every weekend to do laundry. I know she's been there because I can smell her. She doesn't believe me though. And if you walk into the laundry room, where her clothes are, you almost fall over from the smokers smell. It took my 13 y/o's telling her that she smelled bad before she would believe me!!
There was something about not smoking at the resort when we checked in at BWV last month...I just can't remember what it was. And there was stuff around the villa saying it was smoke free. I have to tell you...I would be mightily annoyed if I checked into a room and found that it had been smoked in previous to my stay. And you are not allowed to smoke on your balcony...plain and simple. Why is it okay for someone to smoke out on their balcony making it impossible for me to enjoy mine?? I am allergic to cigarette smoke so it bothers me in any amount. I love JellyRolls but can't stay in there very long due to the smoke. I take meds in order to spend an hour or two with my friends but I don't think I should have to take a medication in order to sleep in my villa or enjoy my balcony at night.
THis is one more instance of people feeling the rules don't apply to them. It's almost like they are saying..."Hey, I paid big bucks for this room, I'll smoke in it if I like. It's my right." Nope, not a right. But it is my right to breath clean air.
Sorry if this offends anyone, but I didn't make a stink (sorry about the unintended pun) about people smoking in public places when they were able to. But now Disney had instituted rules...there are designated spots for smoking..not in rooms, not on balconies. That's it..plain and simple. Sure hope they enforce the rules...it's good for my health.

I'm not a smoker and will keep my opinion to myself. But we just returned from our stay at OWK and BCV with a large group. One of our members smokes. He stopped at the front desk at both the resorts upon checkin and asked where he was allowed to smoked. Boy was I shocked when he was told her could smoked on the patio of our ground floor rooms at both locations. While everything I read and heard said no you couldn't do this, you can imagine the look on my face when CMs, both front desk and mousekeepers, told him there was no problem with him smoking on the patios. Not the answer I wanted them to say as I wanted him far away. Maybe all CMs just don't know the rules yet. I looked everywhere in the rooms for some guidance, but nothing to be found. :confused3

Thank you for the responsive replies. It sounds like WDW does not call it a "fine" but a "recovery fee". I take it the recovery fee is for whatever WDW has to do to air out a room after a smoking guest checks out. I guess as time goes on we will hear from guests how strictly it is enforced. I was just surprised by my sister's report of "fines" actually being imposed for balcony smoking as it was the first I've heard of the policy being enforced.

I hope they enforce the no smoking policy on balconies. A few years ago we stayed at the WL in November. The weather was beautiful and I loved sitting on our balcony in the evening and keeping the door open before going to bed. We stayed for 4 nights and did this the first 3 nights. The last night we must have gotten new neighbors next door because they smoked on their balcony and of course it came right into our room. I was so disapointed about this and I would have said something to the front desk but as it was our last night I did not bother. If we had been staying any longer I would have.

You know I always wonder when I see young attractive women (who have obviously taken some care with their appearance) if they realize how bad they smell after a cigarette.

That aside, I don't think Disney is going to go around willy-nilly fining people because their rooms smell like smoke. I think its going to be more the following:

Mr. Noddy over in 532 is annoyed at the smell of smoke wafting into his room from 530. He calls the front desk to complain and security knocks on 530 just as Mr. Porry answers the door while Mrs. Porry hurriedly opens the windows and waves a newspaper back and forth to rid the room of the smell.

It is still obvious though that someone JUST had a cigarette. The CM would likely issue a warning unless the CM is having a crappy day or Mr. Porry is dumb enough to answer the door while puffing away. In that case too bad so sad sucks to be Mr. Porry.

Two hours later Mr. Noddy is once again annoyed by the smell of smoke. Well, Mr. and Mrs. Porry -- geniuses both -- are now out several hundred dollars. Sucks to be Mr. and Mrs. Porry who now have no money. Sucks to be Mr. Noddy who shouldn't have smoke wafting into his room. Sucks for everyone.

We were at Coronado Springs over Labor Day weekend and our room smelled like cigs. I called the front desk and asked if our room was a smoking room. The CM said no Disney is non smoking. I said "yea I know as of June but was it smoking before because it smells like cigarettes". He said no it never was so he asked me if I wanted housekeeping to deorderize. I said yes please. Well to make a long story short I don't know if they came or not but the room still stank. After awhile it wasn't bad but each time we walked back into the run you could smell it. We were only there 2 days and I didn't want my husband to have to move again so we stayed. Bad mistake when we got home all the clothes smelled like cigarettes really bad. Even the ones that we didn't use. If that ever happens again I will insist to be moved. And bye the way I feel bad for smokers there is no place left for them to smoke. My husband use to smoke before he needed double byepass. He would only smoke outside though. Anyway why did they do away with the smoking rooms? That way you could keep all the smelly rooms together. And keep the other rooms smoke free. Thank god my DH quit because he hates when people tell him what to do.

Ok here goes, I'm a smoker and I have always follwed the rules of smoking in DSA's at the parks and elsewere on property and being mindful of others who do not smoke, but I am TIRED of being accused of smoking in non smoking rooms. I have always requested a smoking room when making ressies and when I've stayed as a cash guest I always got a smoking room. However when I would stay at BWV on points, and this has happened on my last 5 trips to BWV I am given a nonsmoking room becuase there were no smoking rooms available, and told by BWV managment that I could smoke on the balcony!!!! And yes I do pay alot for the opportunity to stay on-property, I should be able to have my vacation too, which includes being able to smoke in my room!! Why is Disney assinging smoking rooms to non smokers anyway!!If Disney would clean the rooms properly, alittle febreeze goes a long way, I wouldn't even be here. So all you non smokers out there that insist we are breaking the rules, mabey you should find out the facts before you condem others for rule breaking.

I have ressie for Late Nov - early Dec for a smoking room, I made that ressie in Jan before this new policy, I have yet to be informed by Disney that I will not be able to get a smoking room due to new policy and given the opportunity to cancel (the info on these boards is irrelevant as Disney dosen't know if subscribe or not), now on 8-17-07 I added on to stay at CRB for an additional week, no mention that All resorts are non-smoking, nothing on my ressie that the resorts are non smoking. Personally Disney can take their policy and place it elsewere. Disney does not enforce it's own rules on alot of varing subjects, from Wheelies to Line Jumping becuase it keeps the quests happier, just like complaing about the smell of a room they will move you to keep you happy. Enforce all the rules or none, make up your mind!!!!!! not just the ones that fit the political flow!!!!! Can't wait to see how many complain and whine when they ban purfume or aftershave becuase that something that really irrates me.

So, we just got back from the YC.....so there were a few times when we had to sit out and wait the 30 min from the last lightening sighting...so I am sitting in this wonderful area with a great view...and smell cigarette smoke! UGH I think...I am not a smoker....I am sitting in the desinated smoking area!!! lol..I found it humorous and had a good laugh with the smoker:) So, the YC offers great smoking areas...I also found alot of guests finsihing off their ciggy right before they entered the building.
While so many state their "disgust" with this subject...I dont like the smell either, but remember non smokers are more sensitive to the smell...I am sure many smokers would love to kick the habit....

So does that mean you feel the new policy doesn't apply to you and you're going to smoke in your room? Yikes. Enjoy your vacation. Your lucky neighbours. Lucky, lucky people! I guess since they are staying in their rooms for free and haven't paid for an expensive vacation that they should feel priviledged to enjoy your second-hand smoke.

Egads! :scared:

If you review your membership materials, you'll notice the caveat that rules like these may change at any time. You received notice of these changes through your membership mailings and emails -- most notably, in the more recent issues of "Vacation Magic." Your fellow members thank you for following the rules. :thumbsup2

My guess, and it is only a guess, is that they're going to look for harder evidence than a mere odor. Perhaps it will be video of people smoking on the balcony, CM's who spot offenders after a report from another guest, or cigarette ashes and buts in the trash when housekeeping cleans. I also believe that the mere threat of a fine may be enough to stop many from smoking in the rooms.

Thank you everyone that kept it going without debating smoking. This has turned into a debate so the thread will be closed.
